Peter? Congratulations. Your complete and utter failure, and the massacre of your entire peasant's crusade, led your successors to actually have some success. Emperor Alexius? Congratulations. Your deal with the city of Nicea, and your foresight to prevent the crusaders from ransacking the place, was perhaps the best outcome that place could have hoped for. Justinian would be proud. Crusaders? Er...still not fond of the whole "holy war" thing, OR of your terrible track record so far, but still, that last battle, holding the line to defend civilians? Classy. Though my praise is more for your soldiers than your leaders. Except you, Robert. You're still cool.

+Jay Downside for the Alexius, it did convince many of the Crusaders that the Byzantines weren't to be trusted, and would happily stab them in the back. The difference was, the Crusaders saw Islam as simply a monolithic enemy that had to be defeated, while the Byzantines had to live next to them. So they were always suspicious of the courtesy and respect that the Romans showed to their foes.

I used to think that Bismark was the most manipulative man in history, but now I'm leaning towards Alexius. The first guy can convince a nation to go to war with an angry letter. The second guy can bend the will of armies under his heel with a little wealth and a lot of guile.
@MrMrtvozornik9 жыл бұрын
+Alexander Abrams-Flohr To be honest, I don't see anything manipulative here. He asked for help from the Pope to RETAKE his land, not to be ransaked by some peasants half a world away from. The problem was of course, that everyone have their own reasons, one guys wants fame and glory, other wants redemption, third one wants to retake the lands that were his, fourth guy wants to take those lands for himself. In all honesty, Crusaders were not to be trusted, even with the oath, yet alone when half of them straight out refused it on the first place.

+Gareth Brooks-Martin They were falling apart. The Great Seljuk Empire had governed pretty much all of the Middle East, but in 1092 it broke up, and it continued to do so until by the time the Crusaders arrived, the old Seljuk territory was divided among more than ten different successor states that spent most of their time fighting each other. The maps shown in this episode are actually wrong, because they depict the domains of Kilij Arslan as the entire former Great Seljuk Empire, when in reality he only governed the Sultanate of Rum, which comprised the western part of Anatolia, and was in nearly continuous warfare against the Danishmends, who controlled northeastern Anatolia. The Danishmends are shown in the video, but when Kilij Arslan is supposedly fighting against them at 6:42, the map actually depicts him as besieging the kingdom of Cilician Armenia, which was a Christian state founded by refugees from Armenia after that was conquered by the Seljuks (it was held at this time by the Saltukids and the Sultanate of Ahlat), and regardless of whether Kilij Arslan was fighting the Cilicians at the time, Cilician Armenia ≠ the Danishmend Sultanate. I can see something coming for the Lies episode...

+Bieseger For the Romans problem was not that they didn't know how to defeat the Turks, or that they lacked bravery and military knowledge and expirience. In many ways they and the Turks were superior in these areas to the Crusaders. Byzantines simply lacked raw power and numbers necessary to step up to the Turks and deliver a smackdown.
@Enkabard9 жыл бұрын
Блажо Ђуровић Well it was problem because they didn't know, that's why they there were loosing and had to call some other forces to aid them, it wasn't because they waken up one morning and said "you know what would be nice, even if we ain't loosin, lets call pillaging and murderous crusaders, not because it's our last option, but just for fun" it doesn't work like that you know. It was because they lost extremely huge partions of their empire to Turks. They fallen to turks after some longer time anyway so it was turks who delievered the final smackdown. And that "friends behind your back" didn't worked out either as it left byzantine empire even more weaker. "freaking byzantines" showed us how huge empire falls even through all the the effort put into saving it.

@Blazo_Djurovic9 жыл бұрын
Daniel Gonzalez The Byzantines did have professional core of troops in that battle, but they suplemented the numbers and abilities with mercenaries. Also reading about that battle at wikipedia it seems that the disaster was mostly caused by fleeing of Armenians/Georgian contigent plus betrayal of other Byzantine commanders. The rest fought to the bitter end, like for example the Turkic mercs that stayed with the army after learning who they will be fighting. Manzikert wasn't significant because Byzantines were defeated, the instability and civil war, and the loss of Asia Minor is what did them in.

Personally I thoroughly enjoy Extra History, they find a great way of retelling history and even make a special effort at the end of each series to point out what they may have gotten wrong or embellished, which (I think) inspires interested people to look deeper into these events which can only be a good thing :)

This is easily the funniest topic so far covered on this show, and I am very impressed with how accurate the information is. The Crusades tend to bring out the propagandist in historians, rather than the objective narrator.

I'll tell you what, the Crusades isn't the romance that History makes it out to be. But that story of holding the line while Turkish Arrows bombarded, until the other forces arrived... that's worthy of a Movie. 300 took a single battle and made it a movie, I'd LOVE to see this. Especially with the added bonus that some Priest with no Battle Experience took a group behind, burned the camp, and turned the tide.

Question about the battlecry: is it possible that he said "if god willing, we will all be Fortunate"? I know that Fortune in latin is the same word for luck and wealth, so... possible mixup? Just asking.
@matthewhowell669 жыл бұрын
+o_O The entire quote is: "Let us all unite in Christ's faith and the victory of the Holy Cross, for, God willing, today we shall all be made rich." legacy.fordham.edu/halsall/source/gesta-cde.asp I'm assuming James Brundage got the translation right. I'm not sure it's meant literally. I find it just as easy to believe it's a reference to Philippians 3:8, or a similar verse. I don't know. This is a recurring problem with this particular series, the complete lack of context. It's like recording John Fisher's last words and being confused that a man about to be executed would refer to it as "my wedding day" out of apparent ignorance of how bishops think of themselves.
@stefanomaccarone46379 жыл бұрын
+Will Krause You might be thinking about the word "felix" which can be translated as happy, rich, lucky and even fertile. However the latin quote should be "Estote omnimodo unanimes in fide Christi et Sanctae Crucis victoria, quia hodie omnes divites si Deo placet effecti eritis." So the word used is divites which is the plural of dives which just means rich, therefore it's quite straightforward, if you ask me.
@WillKrause219 жыл бұрын
Ya, now that I see the latin, he isn't using any of the more vague terms that could mean rich. It is still weird, though.
@stefanomaccarone46379 жыл бұрын
+o_O I guess it is possible, but I wouldn't count on it: to me it seems much more plausible that we are used to literary rousing speeches but a veteran army on foreign soil could be better motivated by the promise of loot then by the Kingdom of Heaven or some bullshit. I know that after learning about their heroic resistance it would seem more fitting some kind of "St. Crispin's day speech" but heroic deeds are not always done because of heroic reasons.

Sultan Kılıç Arslan was only 17 years old in a newly built sultanate, when he had to fight against a sea of combined European forces. Still he and his successors managed to defeat crusaders many times to a degree that they chose the sea route to the Holy Land instead of passing through Anatolia.

This series is fantastic! With the covering of Early Christian Schisms and the First Crusade, hopefully the First Fidna is on your to-do list! I think it would be very enlightening to many viewers to see how Fidna shaped not only the development of one of the most populous religions in the world, but the internal political schisms that still shape modern politics in the Middle East to this day

@TimGallois9 жыл бұрын
+notbobby125 It's translated from Latin. It is very likely that he didn't meant "rich in gold", which is a sad overview by EC.
@stefanomaccarone46379 жыл бұрын
+Tim CAILLOT +notbobby125 Actually they DID get rich for a short period of time since they captured Kilij Arslan's treasury. Moreover, as I said in another comment, the latin world is "divites" meaning rather unequivocally "rich", not "rich in spirit" or stuff like that. I mean, it's not like these videos are perfect, far from it, but accusing EC of overviewing something just because it doesn't sound as poetic as you wish is quite dumb.

I'm starting to see (maybe imagine:) where did the notoriety of knight Templar came from. If they were made from, or by the people who stood those 7 hours in that desert sun with such discipline - these are some powerful people. A band of people who looked into death's eyes together and said F* you to it's face, afterwards can basically do anything they decide to do as a group, and such experiences make bonds so tight you can not infiltrate into or buy out members of. So these were some powerful people all monarchs and priest back home should fear if you are not on their side. Now I understand the mythology and the aura of threat that should have been told about such people in the age of very limited information bandwidth
