I agree with Peter, your videos are second to none. Their is a way to remove the Silver easily from a melting crucible. If you put quite a bit of ground Borax into the crucible and heat it till it goes like glass beforehand if you are quick and remove the Silver quickly it will be easily removed. However, this may leave a residue of glass like borax on the silver, but this is easily removed with a dilute liquid of sulfuric acid and water "jewellers pickle" (10/1). But if you are just doing a small amount, charred wood is good ;-)

Not easily. Silver chloride is to be avoided, if at all possible, as the conversion to elemental silver is difficult. The best method is through cementation of the nitrate onto copper. The only reason he did not get almost 100% recovery is because he did not get rid of the excess nitric acid before cementing out the silver.

Instead of using an excess of nitic acid, you should have made sure there was an excess of silver at the end of the reaction. This way, the solution will only contain silver nitrate and copper nitrate, with no unreacted nitric acid to dissolve the copper and silver in the next step. Just filter off the unreacted metal and use copper to cement out the silver powder.

Instead of using copper wire to precipitate the silver out, you could have just used something containing chlorine (sodium chloride, bleach, etc...). You'll drop out silver chloride, which can be melted, releasing chlorine gas and leaving near pure silver. It's less expensive and easier to do than the copper wire method, but both will work. Great video by the way, just thought add my two cents!
@jordibear7 жыл бұрын
Sadly, melting Silver Chloride is difficult, and doesn't just "drop out" the silver. You have to use sodium bicarbonate, dextrose, charcoal and a high temperature. It's slow and very annoying to deal with. Most chemists avoid AgCl for this very reason

I found another way to do this, though slower - use HCl mixed with H2O2. I used 35% H2O2 but it is not required, but the reaction runs faster. Note also H2O2 at high concentrations is dangerous, particularly to eyes - use caution. The end result was CuClx (and probably some ZnCl2) in solution (which you can later evaporate to capture) and a silver powder on the bottom of the beaker. I tested it on some 10% silver coins from Mexico to get this result.

I know he did this for teaching us, however like he said, I also recommend not to use a coin!!! Use sterling jewelry! Even a worn 1964 silver dime is worth a couple bux! Hydrous Copper(II) Nitrate can be reduced with iron or zinc to produce elemental copper. You can also decompose it by heating it into copper oxide, oxygen gas and nitrogen dioxide gas, which can be bubbled through water to make nitric acid and nitrogen monoxide, or bubbled through hydrogen peroxide which is more efficient as it only produces nitric acid. Alternatively, ask your local garbage disposal about when the next chemical disposal is and give it to them. Metal nitrates can be very dangerous, so don't dispose of them lightly.

wouldn't warm salt water precipitate more of the silver versus using copper which would make the silver impure
@jordibear7 жыл бұрын
salt water makes Silver Chloride (AgCl) which is notoriously difficult to deal with and to return elemental silver from it.
@buggsy54 жыл бұрын
No. Also, cementing the silver out with copper does NOT make the silver impure.

I didn't realize how old this video was until I started this but there's been nothing on the news about the laws of physics changing in the meantime so I'll ask anyway. Is there any reason that dollop of silver can't be pounded into a shape conducive to being held by an alligator clip allowing it to be suspended in a fluid (water) with a voltage applied that would permit silver plating another object like a spoon or a knife? A little off-topic but do you know how large (weight) is necessary to silver plate a Bowie knife of average dimensions like eight inches by one and a half inches? ( I disregarded the material missing from the curve in the blade since my math instruction was taught on an abacus). Do you have a video on plating gold or silver? And how does the metal (assuming it is) that makes up the center of clad U.S. coins affect the process of separating the coins silver from its whatever metal center? Thanks for the videos, they're great.

Hopefully someone will come along with better answers than I have. But silver is fairly malleable. Not as much as gold, but you could probably hammer yourself out something fairly thin. I'm not sure how much silver is required to plate a given surface, but you can probably find formulas online. KZbin will have a few videos on the subject. As far as I know, all the metal gets digested. I don't believe it affects how the silver is brought out of solution. But the only US coins with silver in them are 1964 date silver coins and previous. They are 90% silver and 10% copper. All US coins minted today for normal circulation have zero silver content in them. They're zinc and copper, or nickel and copper. But keep in mind that some of those pre-1965 coins are valued more in their current worn states than if you melted them down. The melt value of a 1917 Standing Liberty Quarter is about $2.80. The same quarter, if you sold it for face value, is about $36. I'd venture a guess that you'd be better off buying 99.99% silver ingots or sheets. Those would eliminate the need to search for silver, refine it, and work it to something you can use. But if it's the project you're after, you should use unwanted silver jewelry. It will be the same process. If you do use coins, compile a list of dates and anomalies to look out for. Otherwise there's risk of rendering tens, hundreds, or even thousands of dollars of numismatic value down to the spot price of silver. That being said, certain sterling silver jewelry and antiques are worth a mint. So be watchful of those too.

No. Silver plating is not that easy. Wikipedia should have an article on silver plating.
@davebeckley25844 жыл бұрын
@@buggsy5 It's not easy but can be done with caution. It requires the toxic chemicals potassium cyanide, silver cyanide, and potassium silver cya-nide.

I have watched all your videos and love everything you do. But did I just watch you commit a felony on KZbin?? Lmao xD I promise I wont tell anybody!

I just collect old Canadian dimes and quarters. Lots of the early dates were pure sterling. ;)

Love your videos.. need to see if you did one already for a process that limits the silver lost
@buggsy54 жыл бұрын
The loss was in his procedure, not the process. Also, the silver is not lost - it is in the waste solids/liquids that can be processed further.

Can you please show how to correctly extract platinum palladium and iridium from ore ??? I have tons of metal i cant sell because I don't know how to separate one from the other . Literally hundreds of pounds. Please help.

I planned to extract silver from solder scrap will that be a good method?

Well, look at the title of the video, Part of it says "(Or other silver containing materials)" so i guess yes
@nathank37968 жыл бұрын
+Steven Derp I figured but I was looking for the poster to respond a definite yes or no. thank you for your time. have you used this method?
@averryy8 жыл бұрын
Nathan Kuenstler No, I have not tried this method (yet) And i don't see why not you cant extract the silver out of it. So its probably a yes.
@nathank37968 жыл бұрын
+Steven Derp I think the same way, if I get the chemicals and try I will let you know.
