Extraordinary Career (60 seconds)

At the Police Academy today, Premier John Brumby, Police Minister Bob Cameron and Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland unveiled a $6 million campaign to attract a record 1700 recruits over the next five years.
Mr Brumby said the Extraordinary Career campaign was the first stage of a $673 million Victorian Labor Government commitment to put an extra 1966 frontline police on the beat.
"This campaign will help attract a range of recruits to a career in policing, putting more officers on the front-line and boosting police efforts to make Victoria even safer," Brumby said.
"This record recruitment will mean that starting later this year, there will be a graduation at the Police Academy every fortnight for the next four years."
Mr Brumby said the recruitment campaign was an important part of a record $2 billion Victoria Police budget to help make the state's streets and communities even safer.
"This recruitment campaign is just one of the many ways our government is supporting Victoria Police as they work to reduce crime," Mr Brumby said.
"While Victoria is the safest state in Australia, we want to drive down crime even further and by the end of this year we will have increased the net number of police by almost 2000 since 1999.
"We are also continuing our commitment to providing police with the laws they need to fight crime, including the strengthening of weapons search powers and tough new laws to tackle public order offences."
