As a child, on the way to realisation, one of Paramahamsa Vishwananda’s natural inclinations and spiritual practices was to instruct all children in playing puja. Guruji always directed the games. Often, He spent the entire afternoon repeating mantras. In the village where Guruji and his family were living in Rose Hill, in the garden of the grandmother and in the forest close by, Tulsi plants were growing everywhere.
Once His grandmother took Guruji, who was 4 years old at the time, to a family wedding in Vacoa. There were many people, as the family had many members, Guruji had 30 cousins!
As soon as they arrived, Guruji went directly to sit close to the priest at the wedding altar. The priest was presiding the wedding ceremony, and Guruji chanted the mantras with the priest. As the priest was rushing with the wedding, He said to the priest 'This is not the right way to do it. It is not like this, but like that!' Some members of the family wanted to take this small child away, thinking that He was disturbing the priest. But the priest intervened and said, 'No please let him, He knows what he is talking about.' They were all baffled. Awake bhakti and be realized, know what life really is.
Little mandir of a 5-year-old child: When Guruji was 5 years old, he was doing his puja every day in His small temple in the garden of the house. He had a little hut on the side of the house like a little mandir. It was a little temple of a 5-year-old child. Each year for the festival of Shivaratri, He loved to make a Shiva lingam with clay that was simply dried in the sun. He decorated with gouache, put it in water and then He prayed in front of the lingam.
Tina, his sister, says: ‘As we were living at our grandmother’s home, Visham would often call us to come and pray with Him in His bedroom where He had created a corner with pictures of deities. When we were at primary school, even though we were not in the same class, we would meet up during break at the school playground. During recreation time, Visham would summon the kids and do a little prayer in the playground with them.’
'Visham planted a few vegetables in a corner of the garden', says Tina, 'just like our father used to do in his small vegetable plot. As He was watering his vegetables not only with water but with mantras, His vegetables grew much bigger than the ones of our father!' Watering vegetables with mantras… this was new for the family!
Once He was walking with His father in the street of the city holding his hand. His uncle was at home and was looking for Him. Suddenly, Guruji let go of the hand of His father and disappeared from the street. He appeared again in the house of His uncle.
His uncle remembers: 'Sometimes Visham was talking with people that nobody could see. We thought first that Visham was playing. Then I asked Him: “But with whom are You talking? Who was this person?” But Visham never replied to such questions; He was probably talking with Babaji, talking with Mahavatar Babaji.'
Even though He spent most of His time with the gods, He would also enjoy, like all other children, to play outside. Often with the friends of the neighborhood, they used to sing and dance in the front yard or play hide and seek or catch and run. He also would very much enjoy watching cartoons on television whenever he got the chance to see them at the house of a friend.
