The Skeleton Coast off the coast of Namibia, southwest Africa. Desert lions used to patrol the beaches decades ago before they were exterminated in the region. They’ve been making a slow and steady comeback ever since..

Because Yah, I remember a documentary, perhaps by Nature.. some organization.. many years ago about the Lions of Namibia and how they were cut off from ancestral beach hunting grounds and had lost living memory but the researchers et al could only watch and hope someday the lions would again find the beach. This is really so wonderful to see because it will help the lions survive and grow and hopefully not poach cattle et al from humans. Great news! I'm all for it.

That was an amazing clip. I've witnessed just lions being able to adapt to just about any environment they are put in, and thrive !! What makes me sad about humanity is they just don't care. @ no problem 👍 it’s amazing how adaptable these animals are to the point where they regularly interact with animals that you’d never expect them to, like brown hyenas which are also found on the skeleton coast and coexist and hunt fur seals, leopard seals also swim from Antarctica all the way to Australia and sometimes interact with and hunt platypus, some crocodiles live in the Abanda caves of Gabon and eat bats, and camels will regularly swim across miles in open ocean where sharks reside

Wow amazing, normally brown hyenas hunt the seals. Now, these lions traveled a great distance considering the prey they have in the desert alone. Alot of trouble to go through, but in this case it paid off

Those lions will probably get pretty big eating seals all the time. That's a lot of blubber, not like the lean animals lions normally eat. It would be interesting to study them for a long time and see the effects of eating a fatter diet than most lions.

There was some footage of a male lion feasting on a dead pilot whale in this old National Geographic documentary Survivors of the Skeleton Coast. Sadly it was around the time when the Skeleton Coast lions were wiped out..

Not surprising at all, they are intelligent and adaptive animals. They will stalk and eat any live prey. Seals are mostly blubber so surprised they are interested in them. The Skeleton Coast is a very desolate place that is hard to survive in, maybe they have no choice but to hunt what is available.

No. Desert lions have been making a slow and steady comeback to the Skeleton Coast after being hunted to near extinction in the ‘80s, and even before then they used to prowl the beaches hunting seals and feasting on dead whales (and I’ve seen footage of such behavior..). Now they’re rediscovering old haunts and learning to hunt there again..
