Team Go Rocket takeover starts in the end of January. Giovanni, the boss of Team Go Rocket, is now using Shadow Kyogre when found in Team Go Rocket Headquarters. While he invaded gyms with Shadow Ho-Oh.
Shadow Ho-Oh is a Fire/Flying type Pokemon, which is weak against Water/Electric type moves and double weak to Rock-type moves. As a raid boss, it has 200 attack and 204 defense, learning Extrasensory/Hidden Power/Incinerate/Steel Wing as fast moves and Fire Blast/Solarbeam/Brave Bird as charged moves. While it has a relatively low attack and a double weakness, under enrage mode, both of its stats are drastically boosted. Unless one would cast Purified Gems to subdue Shadow Ho-Oh prematurely, it is neither a light hitting nor a frail raid boss.
In the other side, similar to all Shadow Legendary Raid Boss, if Purified Gems are used as soon as possible until the boss subdued, it is easier than its non-shadow counterpart. For Shadow Ho-Oh, Lv35 Rhyperior/Rampardos would be sufficient to defeat Shadow Ho-Oh as Duo Raid in any weather with Purified Gems usage.
Shadow Ho-Oh itself is not particularly interesting in gym/raid scene, where it ranks lower than other more accessible options like Shadow Staraptor (which is available in the new rocket rotation) or Heatran/Reshiram (Overheat)/Shadow Moltres/Shadow Chandelure.
However, it has an alternate form as Apex Ho-Oh which was available 2 years ago. While Apex Ho-Oh still ranks slightly lower than the top Fire-type like Reshiram (Fusion Flare)/Shadow Moltres/Shadow Chandelure, it can still provide top-tier performance such that it might worth the investment if you gained enough spare XL candy in this weekend.
This time Mega Tyranitar would challenge Shadow Ho-Oh as a Duo Raid without weather boost as well as Purified Gems usage. As stated above, Shadow Ho-Oh is heavy hitting and bulky under its enrage mode. Without Purified Gems, Shadow Rampardos, Shadow Rhyperior, Mega Tyranitar and Shadow Tyranitar are the only realistic choices to defeat Shadow Ho-Oh as a Duo Raid without weather boost.
While Mega Recycling is an extremely effective strategy against standard Tier 5 raid boss, for Shadow Legendary Raid, there is one barrier preventing them from performing as well. The barrier is regen glitch. As most players should know by now, leaving the battlefield and rejoin would cause some of the damage dealt so far being cancelled. While Mega Boost can overcome those rather easily on standard T5 raids, with massive defense buff under enrage mode, regen causes much more time lost than usual. In the other hand, with the attack buff on enrage mode, most Pokemon has relatively low survival time against the raid boss, such that it would cause even more regen by forcing more rejoins.
Thankfully, Mega Tyranitar's high defense/HP stats and the fact that it double resists Psychic-type allows it to keep up a reasonable survival time against Extrasensory/Fire Blast Shadow Ho-Oh if it dodge all the Fire Blast. As a result, it can still afford the time lost from regen glitch and defeat Shadow Ho-Oh in time. Overall, it is a rather close raid despite it has a low TTW (495s) and death count (7) because of regen glitch under enrage mode.
