Extrema Ratio T4000S, field tested for over one week and reviewed. I took this Japanese styled made in Italy, tactical feeling 7" blade out and about. Carving, cutting, chopping, batoning onto it's spine, camp cooking etc.
The Extrema Ratio T4000S handled well, super comfortable, it served me well and stayed super sharp after cutting vines, bamboo, hardwood conifers, oak (green), dead willow, seasoned Hazel and some pine.
I think the appeal for me was the Japanese styling and not too thick blade, which allowed it to really cut and penetrate tough food items such as: tropical bread fruits, sugar cane and pineapples (not shown but eaten!). Coming stills see Face Book page!
The T4000S is basically the big brother/sister to the the very practical T4000C (I reviewed the Extrema Ratio T4000C some 2 years ago).
The scabbard is basic with one closure and some Molle loops. I think vertical handle up, carry only, as I like to have the scabbard retain the blade if the handle closure is open (two ways to secure for best safety in a handle down carry position. As this scabbard doesn't feature this as there is no lower guard on the blade. No hot spots were felt during tough handling without gloves.
If you like this style and want a keen cutting 7" blade without big weight, then you might like the Extrema Ratio T4000S too. See what you think.
You can also see the Extrema Ratio T4000S here:

It seems Extrema Ratio is planning to release some of these knives in December 2022. I wonder whether they keep this timeless design available in the long run, or will it be replaced by the giant mamba....
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 2 жыл бұрын
Who knows. I think there is both good reasons to keep the T4000S as since the blade is much thinner than the Giant mamba it is better a all round cutting. For example if you said choose which one to take camping in the tropics it would be the T4000C (of course I would also have a machete/parang etc. But for sure the Giant Mamba is one heck of a tough knife.

Never on any of my knives from manufacturers using N690. In fact the only knife (yes singular-knife) in out entire house which chips like no tomorrow- in fact I hate even using it as I don't want to ingest the damn shards of metal- is a semi expensive damn cooking knife from a UK company but made in China- Never again will I buy one, can't keep it sharp and the edge is basically falling apart LOL! But no, not on these N690 blades. Like last week, I actually hit a rock with this knife accidentally, I thought it would have chipped out but it didn't it did of course put a very tiny dent in the edge which I'm in the process of taking out but the edge isn't brittle at all and my experience with N690 has never been one for chipping.

Actually I had that problem once. I was using my Dobermann IV for chopping some vegetation near the ground and accidently hit a rock.Maybe the impact was too strong (even though it didn't feel like it) but there was a big chip in the knife. Good thing is I managed to get rid of it by sharpening the knife a few times. Now it looks like new and is sharper than ever! @@BushCampingTools

Yeah, well the smaller version, the T4000S I think is very handy with that Japanese type tanto tip and this one of course. I'm not sure why people say that. Maybe it's hard for them to get over a basic drop point. I mean there's nothing wrong with a drop point, I've got loads but the Japanese certainly weren't using them LOL.

This one cuts and slices better than the other 2 simply because the blade is only 4mm. That being said, it is limited to cutting and slicing but for the most part this os plenty good enough for bushcrafting etc.

Hey great video, I went and bought the ONTARIO MARINE RAIDER BOWIE and took it in the backyard for some heavy chopping and chipped the blade from the tip to about an inch down the blade !!! They are using a 1080 carbon steel now instead of 1095 carbon steel.I don't know if it is the steel or a bad grind? What do you think?

For some reason this comments of yours totally slipped by me and now after a very apologetic 3 years! OMG! I would have said at the time and I hope you did, send it back to them. Chipping is def due to poor heat treatment unless you really abused the blade.

without performing any kind of destruction tests on several randomly from a batch; I'd say more than strong enough for bushcraft work/hiking/camping etc. Even for penetration into objects. As for levering with the tip, I'd go for the Giant mamba with it's super thick tip and similarly shaped blade profile.

Yes*, that's because I only review good quality products, which takes me a long time to do. Why would one waste their time reviewing rubbish products?, just to say they are rubbish-not to mention storing all that garbage or even worse throwing it out in the rubbish. Not for me and this channel. There are bazillions of channels doing this already. 35 years plus outdoor experience, I think I know a good product when I see it (and with a high probability) that it will perform as described and hence be worthwhile acquiring in order to produce a field review (not desktop, bedroom, garage, backyard). As for the suitability of the products seen here for my viewers, that is entirely up to their personal choices and preferences, as it should be. ("maybe it's right for you"). These are my opinions based upon those 35 years of global experience in the outdoors including 2 expeditions. * ("All reviews and conclusions are the same." LOL- of course they are not, one must read the video descriptions thoroughly and the accompanying blogs, both places where additional information can be found in order to provide a thorough report within the constraints of reasonable time spent by myself). I take my reviews very seriously and I'll go out on a limb to say that I do not believe anyone who has chosen a product based upon what I have said here has been disappointed in their choice. However, all that being said, everyone who comes here is totally entitled to their views.

What is your opinion of this n690 steel ? Just the unbiased truth, and in comparison to sharpening 12c27
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, well I've got loads of knives made with N690, most are at HRC 58 (according to manufacturers) and several knives in 12C27. I think that Sandvik's 12C27 is a very good knife steel (many think it isn't any good- It works well for me, LOL BTW Sandvik never told me to say that!). The knives I have with 12C27 are fairy easy to maintain a good edge. I think if N690 is hardened above 58, then it becomes difficult to sharpen if you let it get blunt. What do I mean by "Blunt", I mean you can not cut your finger with it, so blunt. I have a FKMD knife I bought before the channel got going and one I let it go blunt from exhaustive usage in the wilds, it was clumsy of me and it took some time to get a good edge back on it. I believe it was over 58 for sure on the HRC scale. it's not a problem but something to keep in mind. I think the Co in the N690 is not a super deciding benefit to outdoor knife users, as the addition of Co was originally there for cutting tools at high speed and no lubrication where the temper should not be affected by high temperatures in the cutting tools. The Co helps tp prevent this according to Bohler's data. However, the resistance to corrosion is fairly good for a stainless which can be hardened sufficiently for outdoor knives. I think we have to remember that once a Rockwell goes over 58 there is simply less Chromium in solid solution to help prevent corrosion, so there is always a trade off with high Rockwell (excepting maybe Vanax type alloys and the like). My 12C27 knives are at higher Rockwell than my N690's but i can still sharpen them. So my advice/opinion is that N690 is also great but don't let N690 blades go blunt f they carry a HRC of over 58. Hope that Helps. BTW this knife in this video is easy to keep deadly sharp just by stropping it on some leather with a abrasive compound (I use the brown one- grade escapes me at present sorry).
@BushCampingTools
@BushCampingTools 5 жыл бұрын
BTW I think that D2 will always be easier to sharpen than a stainless alloy and D2 is also a very good steel for outdoor knives, as long as you remember it isn't exactly a stainless alloy.

@@BushCampingTools the way fallkniven likes so much cobalt leds me to believe there has to be more effects on the steel performance than to prevent loss of temper, but who knows ?

@@dias17se Hi, There are, but not really anything which would slightly concern outdoors peoples check this out:www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0010938X11003507 I have emails sent to me directly from technical staff (Not sales staff) at Bohler. However, elements do not work alone within an alloy and I do not see for example ELMAX out performing N690 although I have not done any scientific tests to say otherwise. One needs to make identical knives, hardened identically and testing exactly the same for cutting performance (also same edge geometry) as a scientist that's how I would do perform such a test in order to publish something that wasn't garbage and truly conducted in a scientific manner. All of the tests on KZbin and I mean all comparing knives and steels are ONLY opinion. I'll challenge anyone to it. Also see this: www.bohler-edelstahl.com/en/N690.php Certainly below 60 HRC, N690 has good corrosion resistance, but it will rust, only 300 and 400 series are very resistant to rusting but aren't any good for outdoor knives except in handles. for example the investment cast Aitor handle of the Jungle king.

Germany. Land of the million rules and constant paternalism. Honestly, I hope I won't see the day when they take away even carrying under 12cm blades from us. But with all the crazy people copying knife attacks onto pedestrians, be it terrorists or homicidal maniac, I can already feel something might come at the knife community. They don't even use survival knifes, it's mostly kitchen ones they picked up at a supermarked nearby. And criminal youths use spring knifes to stab each other. After all it's always the peaceful harmless majority that has to suffer for the crimes of a tiny minority. The state's only solution is forbid, forbid, forbid. They don't realize terrorists take whatever is available: Knifes, hammers, cars - I'm sure if all is removed they will just flex off a traffic sign and use it as a spear. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person understanding that banning things does not solve the problem. :(
