Just a note, those first pieces of wood you show us cutting. It's not plywood, it's particleboard. So make sure it's sealed well because particleboard swells if it gets wet. It's a useful alternative to plywood which is more expensive but steps need to be taken to keep it safe from water.
@EvelynM-vlogs2 жыл бұрын
Technically its not particle board, which has a super rough finish. It is, however, high-density fiberboard which is what many cabinets and baseboards are made from. Painting will waterproof it, BUT the bottom that is touching the floor has not been painted. Next time I would suggest painting all sides before installing. Applying a bead of silicone that later can be easily removed from the tile surface will also stop any water from getting under the shelving unit. This is also why you should also always silicone on any baseboards in a bathroom or kitchen as they, too, are never painted on the bottom or backside.

I might use wide white shelving that can be cut to the right length for sides and interior shelving, the white melamine surface is used on cabinets in bathrooms and is water resistant, also lifting up the bottom shelf to clear the floor would be another detail to consider in his great idea for bathroom storage.

While we are not renters, I still like learning renter-friendly techniques because sometimes I want to spruce something up but not make a permanent change. I love painters tape - my younger daughter put up a wall of posters and photos using painters tape and 5 years later, pulling it off, there’s no residue. This wouldn’t be true of masking tape (ask me how I know!). My only concern with Drew’s method was whether the wallpaper paste could penetrate the painters tape, but he tested that so it’s all good.

@IsabelleShae2 жыл бұрын
@@lonefox that's great you had that experience this time, but you really can't guarantee with "painter's tape" that it won't pull up paint, especially the longer that it's left. Especially with this volume. Overarchingly, the evidence from decades of jobs still shows you should not apply painters' tape long-term if you need the surface underneath to keep its paint coating. It's one thing to do yourself, another to suggest that any adhesive peel-n-stick wall treatment is not truly renter-friendly, and to proceed with extreme caution (lightly applying the tape, not pressing down hard) and to have a backup plan (color-matched paint). I know you do projects often, but knowing professional painters has taught me that the experience you're paying for is all the problems that "don't" happen on a job. Otherwise, great and creative vid!

@justtryme20202 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree about just not wanting to commit to a permanent change for a room even when you own your house! My only question about the painter's tape and wallpaper paste was whether the moisture of the bathroom would effect the adhesive? I worked at Sherwin Williams for years and would not be concerned with the tape damaging the wall or paint as long as you used painter's tape.

You could still use the exact same steps, just subtract the height of the legs from the height of the box and screw them under. They don't have to be tall to be functional. Most of us have small and boring bathrooms, whether we're living in an apartment or a smaller and older home (not all of us live in McMansions), so this kind of inspiration is refreshing. Wondering if you painted behind the toilet tank. It's easy to reach in the back to paint if you remove the top of the tank and use a small roller on a short extension. Pet peeve: plain clear glass in bathroom windows. WHAT? That's not your fault of course, and the window does have the Roman shade on it, although it looks too thin to provide much opacity at night when the lights are on in the bathroom. Maybe guys don't think about that kind of thing as much.

I'm sure there's some sort of exceptionally high end tape that someone here is going to comment and say, "Nuh, uh, it's fine, I did it before." Just a warning that it *might* not be as renter-friendly as you think if you have the same experience as me. Won't the moisture from the showers eventually do something to the tape?

This is soft, simple, cute, not loud. I dig it. Also I wonder how good that candle smells!!

I really like the finished look. However...I have a few points. Iwould have put adjustable legs on the vanity for two reasons. 1, to level it out and 2, to get it up off the floor for cleaning and to keep it dry. Also all the mixed metals are bothering me, they are ALL different. Light, hook, faucet, shower head. Brass/gold, black, nickel and chrome.

I like the mixed metals! I think it's personal preference. :)

Scares me for the long run with that under sink shelving being on the floor. That wood will expand when wet and with it being in the bathroom right by the shower that’s inevitable. I always love the final products of your room renos but wanted to share that bit!

Adorable. The best part for me is the little vase with the little buds.

That vanity is so smart! “Back in the old days” we used to sew a skirt to fit around those sinks to hide storage behind, but your brilliant idea is so much more attractive. Also, for folks who don’t have saws, many places that sell wood will cut your pieces to size for you.

Wonderful makeover! The vanity storage is brilliant and I have to try making a Roman shade because it looks beautiful. Well done, Drew!

Holy Cow! I am in love with what you did in this bathroom! The solution to the vanity is genius and oh how I wish I had known this or been adventurous enough to try something like this during my renting days. Everything you did in this bathroom are simply perfection. Love your channel!🥰

Wow I find it so crazy that landlords are aloud to forbid that kind of stuff. I work for a housing company in Germany and never in a million years would we be aloud to forbid the tenants to paint their walls or add wallpaper.. but given the circumstances, I absolutely love the outcome of the makeover! There’s never a design or diy I don’t like ✨ love your work!

I agree ! In France like in Germany renters are allowed to paint , add wallpaper and nail into walls.(the place has to be like day1 when you move) Surprising this landlord does not want paint although it is easier to redo comparing to screws holes in walls :)

In australia, you cant really do anything to rentals - not even nails in the wall without permission.
