Thank you so much, this is educative and more informing than all the videos I've watched on analysis. wasnt he supposed to build atleast a pratt bottom chord truss and how much would it hold with an i-beam or the pratt top chord truss ?

Since the original video only displays one dimension (the length of the angle cut of approx. 6 5/8 inches ) , you can not be accurate. But looks to me like the span is 12 feet and all the tubing would be 4 inch by 4 inch based on that one shown measurement. The spacing appears to be 16 inches on centers. And you do not indicate the added strength of the welded angle on top and bottom that the rollers run on.

I noticed the top tubing you figured 120 x 80 (5"x3"). If you look in the video I'm pretty sure it's 80 x 80 (3") square.

Jay Pee Robot, if you figure backwards from the only measurement shown in the original video, you will find that the tubing would be 4 inch by 4 inch. Not 3 by 3.

Excellent application of engineering design. However, i still don’t know how you were able to interpret the similar results as being safe and within limits 🤔

That's because his analysis is not compliant to any design code whatsoever. This is useful as far as a first year college student learning Finite Element Analysis or learning how to use Solidworks with some very very rudimentary considerations for performing stress analysis. I wouldn't even call it designing a steel structure let alone a crane. Don't go thinking you could knock a few steel tubes together and carry out this FEA and make yourself a crane.

Hey Mohammad, nice video. However I have two questions, first why fixed? For fixed support this means that you have no displacements and no rotations. This is applicable in case the crane is bolted to the ground, but for some reason I am thinking it will be on wheels, am I wrong? So what is the proper support then, I'd like to know? Usually this is to be supported like a simply supported beam, what are the supports then? About the second question - why the size of the circles where is the load is 35mm? How did you determine it? Shouldn't this size be smaller since the contact between the wheel and the surface when looked normal to the right plane, the contact is in point. So why sircle and why the circle is 35mm diameter? and shouldn't the contact be linear since the wheel is cylindrical?

Hey Validimir. Thanks for you comment. For your first point I do agree with you. And from technical point of view, even if it is bolted to the ground the fixation should be hinged unless the bolting is done in a very professional way that satisfies the fixed condition. I defined fixed connection just for the purpose of a quick check no more. In this case actually it should be planer which gives the crane the degrees of freedom to move on the surface in all directions but dosent allow it to leave the ground due to its own weight and the applied load, which takes us to another aspect which is the stability of the crane under loading, I mean overturning. For the second question. I sat the diameter to 35 instead of defining a point load to overcome the numerical problems in FEM and to reduce the analysis time. For it to be more accurate. A two leaner loads should be applied to the ends of the rectangular section since in the actual design there is an angle placed on the top and the load is transmitted from that angle to the rectangler section. Over all I 100% agree with your points. The thing is that I tried to make a quick check analysis. Thanks for your points :)

I am planing to build a similar crane with HEB160 beams (German Norm or something). I wonder how much they can support. I am using Fusion360 for this. Nice video.

Hello Mr Mohammad and thank you very much for this excellent work and especially for sharing it THANKS My little project at home is to build such a crane or hoist similar to the one you analyzed during this video but having only one support on the left side while it remains free on the right side; without having to move the crane at all! the load to be handled does not exceed 1000 Kg each time: Do you please believe that it is possible to realize this idea without risk of accidents?

What about the bolts? Especially the two holding the rollers and plates together, how would you know what grade to use?

Hey Einen That can be simulated too. I didn't do that because this is just a simplified model. If you are interested in seeing how to analyze the bolts, please let me know so I will create another video showing you the case :)

And how do we decide the size of weld beads and filler material so that the welding does not fail? Also which simulation is more close to real situation, i mean the one in which we considered all the members as a structural member or the one with a solid body? Thanks for the great work

Mohammad I really appreciate you performing this sot of safety checks even if just. Quick check. It help keep many DYIers from getting hurt by coping good designs. There is this similar situation that I thing would benefit from your analysis. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZKcqY2jos95Zqs. In this video all of the loads are dependent on welds of a suspect WPS when a better practice could have been followed. I’m afraid that the SWL I much lower then realized although the builder does specifically call it out, he implies that the gantry will lift parts of his heavy machinery.
