People are commenting on how this isn't good for real combat, but this is supposed to be a performance, so it makes perfect sense to take the "awesome, but impractical" route. But I can tell you, if you could whip out a katana and do that, then most people wouldn't want to mess with you anyway.

Pretty impressive. That is a well balanced blade. I do not know too much, but I do know that the control of a weapon means a mastery of it. Would this guy take down an Edo era Samurai? Doubt it. If some doosher broke into his house would he lose his arms? Guaranteed.

So lots of fancy moves, pointless overly dramatic kiaaaiiis and of course acrobatics. And yes, I guarantee this guy would freeze up and die quickly in an actual sword fight. Still, gotta respect him for his ability to entertain the crowd with his sword juggling.

Just because its flashier than anything you will ever be capable of, it does not mean its impractical. This is clearly a demonstration of how one would approach fighting multiple opponents (you know, like you would back in feudal Japan).. Also, if you just recite moves and kata in a duel you will lose. Real combat is 100% improvisation and people have forgotten that these days. Kata is just form and in a demonstration i would rather see what someone is fully capable of instead of performing a series of kata. Aaaaanyway, of you cant see whats REALLY going on in this performance then just shut up, because if you could see what up then you wouldnt be posting shit to begin with
@saycrawell13 жыл бұрын
I would have to say.. This is almost easy to the average man.. but as a swordsmen I most also agree that this is a very different way to view katana style in terms of what it used to be.. Most of the time clanging of swords rarely happened.. It was evade strike.. Samurai as we probably all know honored one another to never pull out a real sword unless it was to kill. I hope that everyone realizes this was just a show not the real deal..

@billvw1974 Musashi's greatest weapon aside from his ability with two katanas was his mobility, that's how he managed to take down an entire sword school that was out for revenge, he led them through places where only one at a time could take a shot at him, aside from that dual katana styles usually involve a lot of twirling of the body for greater striking power. I take great pride in knocking the agile on their asses, but I never underestimate them.

I love how everyone in the comment's section thinks they're freaking Musashi himself. We KNOW this isn't a combat routine, the guy performing it knows it's not a combat routine, that's not the point. What he's displaying is a level of precise timing, agility, and raw energy that I bet none of you come close to possessing.
@Hiryu4510 жыл бұрын
Forget the "Combat Routine" He's just baton twirling. He has no concept of how to use a real sword. Yes, posture and yell at the audience, no zanshin or proper metsuke. So why use a katana when doing it?
@swordsmanfabian1810 жыл бұрын
Richard Hill Do you sword "experts" all suffer from selective reading? First of all, what does it matter what sword he uses? You people keep saying the same thing, "That's not how you use a sword" "That will get you killed" "Look at me I sound like I know what I'm talking about" Yeah, we GET IT, it's not a practical form, that ISN'T THE POINT. This isn't a traditional kata or tamashigiri demo, what he's doing is showing off his physical coordination which is absolutely impressive. If you and your knowledge of what's proper can do better, post a video and link me because I would really love to see that.
@jakklyman764410 жыл бұрын
Fabian Ruelaz No shit, you'd think all these armchair critics had never seen a fucking routine before.....and for any of them to actually say, "he doesnt know how to use a sword" really tops stupidity to make that assertion after watching a 1 min 30 sec routine. He showed his speed, coordination and the FACT he knew his way around a sword. A routine based entirely on real "what you would end up using in a sword fight" would be really lame for most people, AND if you notice guys like the shaolin monks practice and do routines and compared to what they do in the ring, there is a noticeable difference, but, one cant help notice, they have not stopped doing the former....so stuff like this might be showy and "unrealistic" but that doesn't necessarily mean there is no place for it-and anyone who makes such strong assertions with so little info has questionable reasoning skills, in my opinion.
@Hiryu4510 жыл бұрын
Fabian Ruelaz My oh my, First of all, I never called myself an expert Fabian, so take your own lesson to heart. Secondly If he's "Just showing off his physical coordination" as you claim, he wouldn't be wearing a hakama, Gi or carrying a sword. Also, you are wrong, the title says "Katana form at Competition" so obviously it is done believing to be a martial art, and therefore I do know what I'm talking about. If he does know how to handle a Japanese sword, he does not show it here. He should be twirling a baton instead of a sword. I don't need to watch any more than a few seconds here to know this is pure theatrics that show NO knowledge of the proper way to use a katana. So Fabian, your claiming this is not a form, yet it is in the title. Nuf Said.
@DamienZshadow9 жыл бұрын
Richard Hill Form, set and routine are interchangeable synonyms regarding the same thing.He's allowed to honestly wear whatever he wants and do whatever he wants with whatever he wants. Why use a katana instead of a baton? Because it's more impressive to see him pull off a raiz and throw and catch a bladed weapon. I'm a mixed martial artist and I train with the intention of self defense and combat in mind. I also train in gymnastics and parkour for fun and entertainment. I am allowed to combine the two and practice spinning kicks, butterfly twists, and backhand springs without anyone needing to assume that I would do any of it in a real fight. It may not be so for this guy but learning how to do a 540 round kick may not be useful but the act of learning it makes my regular roundhouse kick so much more effective and accurate. I can imagine that if he did also train in real Iaido and historically accurate swordsmenship, his dexterity and control must be phenomenal. You don't have to throw a sword around in a fight, but practicing to do so may ensure you won't drop a sword when using it properly. Martial arts do not have to be directly applicable in self defense or even historically accurate. Look a T'ai Chi, still considered a martial art yet it emphasizes in no way that one should defend themself in slow motion.

What is bushi and being a samurai is more than a sideshow of western misunderstanding standing up for a crowd pleasing sword weilding acts. It is a way of life and the embodiment of principles and rituals observed in sword. Movements are treated with respect and honor and as much as possible ending up a duel with a single strike and less possible pain. People like this clearly misunderstood the essence of that way of life and should just contend themselves to the practice of chinese martial arts.
@DamienZshadow9 жыл бұрын
Or maybe people like this can express themselves any way they wish and adopt whatever they want into their style. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the historical accuracy and philosophy of traditional martial arts. My wife has trained since she was six in a very traditional Okinawan Gojuryu Karate school as well as Kabudo and Iaido. I mean no disrespect to what it stands for when I say that it is none of anyone's business what someone does with their time. You don't like it? That's fine, you are certainly free to express your distaste in the aesthetics of his performance. Telling someone to be content with learning another style because you don't approve? Maybe he didn't misunderstand but simply doesn't agree or abide by it. He can still appreciate certain aspects and imagery if he likes. I enjoy a very small amount of rap; do I have to enjoy drugs, cars, and womanizing as most rap songs do? Absolutely not.
@cmdrdredd9 жыл бұрын
Eh? This is done as a display of one's speed and body control over the weapon. No different than Nunchuku demonstrations in Extreme Martial arts competition. Wushu is a national sport of China and uses similar principles. You take the traditional techniques and add artistic license to make them into a flashy form. It's not supposed to be a combat art, but requires no less discipline and training as someone training in Tameshigiri.

The dude pulled off a sideswipe and an aerial while spinning and catching a 2-foot blade. How is this not impressive? I trick and I can tell you that it's not easy to do either of those moves and even more difficult/dangerous to do it with a weapon of that size in your hand.
@manictiger9 жыл бұрын
***** I highly doubt it was actually a Katana. It's likely a deliberately dull aluminum prop designed for movies and stunt work. But even if it was a Katana, about 98% of those cuts aren't lethal and you'd ruin the blade if there was actual goza mat and bamboo to hit. You'd probably even be able to damage my Cheness Inc. 'Specialized Goza Cutter' with this shit and that's actually designed to survive stupidly bad cuts. I agree with skykid. I'm not impressed. Iado practitioners that can go from full-speed swing to dead stop mere millimeters from their target impress me. The best I can do is inches away and I still get a few millimeters of bobble when I do those exercises. Anyone can swing a blade with no regard to precision and angle for the sake of flashiness. Not everyone can shave the skin off an angled bamboo stalk.
@DamienZshadow9 жыл бұрын
manictiger No, actually not everyone can swing a blade like that. I don't know about you but I can't do a sideswipe while holding a slab of metal. Hell, I've only done a sideswipe once in my life. Can you do a sideswipe? Judging by your post, it doesn't seem like you read any of mine. I doubt he thinks that any of this reflects anything you would really do in a real sword fight. In fact, I don't think any real martial artists watching this is fooled by a second to think that this is applicable. It doesn't make it any less impressive or disingenuous. You're really just stating the obvious. I agree, shaving bamboo is impressive but both are impressive in their own way. No body is making the argument that anything he is doing is helpful in a real fight so what are you even trying to say that everyone doesn't already agree with? I should also reiterate, flashy acrobatic moves test someone's coordination and train the mind and body to be very reflexive and aware. I will never do a 540 round kick in a real fight, but you can be sure my regular round kick has to be solid if I can do a 540. It's not the trick but what you have to do to be able to a martial arts trick that makes your basics strong and something to be contended. Now can this guy use a sword properly? That's uncertain but what is certain is that he is very comfortable and dexterous with an object of that particular size and shape. If he is classically trained, I gaurantee you that helps him coordinate his movements when applying himself to accurate and effective strikes in training.
@manictiger9 жыл бұрын
***** Sideswipe? You mean treating it borderline like a bastard sword? I've done a few katas that include that. Or you mean that twirly shit? I can do that, too-- but I would never do it. No point. I practice martial arts. Martial as in, Mars, as in the Roman god of war. It's not supposed to be purely art. That's what fire batons are for.
@DamienZshadow9 жыл бұрын
manictiger What? Dude, look up a sideswipe and know how difficult that trick is. No one is calling these skills applicable to a martial setting what so ever. It's similar to the Marines spinning their rifles in their drill exercises. They don't even use those rifles anymore let alone use them like that in combat. It is a measure of your dexterity and control. Please, upload a video of you doing a sideswipe because I don't believe you know what it is.

That would be quite impressive as a movie fight, but I can't see how it would work in a real sword battle. We're taught in Iaido that there is no wasted movement, and to be fair that was full of wasted movement. I'd be laughed out of my dojo for doing this kind of swordplay.

Heyo young comment here did you have fun watching the vid? Well I sure did I even yelled along with him. You know, like when you sing along a song. Mom got mad tho. That didn't stop me from yelling along sadly...

Realistically, this would make more sense if you replaced the katana with a bo staff. Then all his aggressive maneuvering, that would destroy that replica katana if it had hit anything, would make more sense. Martial arts is taught to defend life, not leave it wide open for unpreparedness.

Using a katana is all about foot work, not spinning the sword around. his steps were wrong, his stance was wrong, he drew his sword wrong.......whats the point of spinning a sword when you cant even get your foot work right?

that sport is cool. A mix of acrobatics, jongling, gymnastics and here and there a few sword moves. This guy are really impressive acrobats. What would make this guy even more impressive if he would trains some real katana sword fighting techniques. it looks very impressive but if he would have been trained a bit with a proper technique it would look even better. and it would make a difference for all the idiots here who believe this is supposed to have something to do with real fighting and critique this guy. But of course it would make his kata even more impressive, because you can see wheather somebody knows how to handle a katana or not. this is still missing but if he would know train a bit profesionally, his katas could be absolutely stunning

A very nice show but samurai didn’t fight like that , nor did they show off like that.
