I’ve always had less but when I decided I wanted to become a minimalist I started with the middle drawer of my nightstand. I went from there and then I did my entire house. It didn’t take me a long time because I didn’t have a lot of stuff but I did go back and go through everything again and got rid of even more. I absolutely love being a minimalist and wouldn’t change it for anything.

What has helped me the most in my decluttering journey is to pull everything out and start with a clean space and instead of looking for what to get rid of I look for the special things I know I want to keep. Then really look at the rest seriously considering if I need to keep it or not. Mind shift same result probably but it was what helped my mindset on decluttering.

Sometimes I take it all out to declutter, and sometimes I just do one section at a time. It depends on my mood and what I can handle that day.

Another decluttering channel I watch had a really good approach to sentimental items that belonged to family and she said "at some point my relative walked into a store saw a thing and bought it." Just like we walk into a store and buy something because we either need it or want it. Often times when we're buying stuff for ourselves we're not thinking I'll pass this gravy boat down to my daughter and one day her granddaughter will inherit it and so on. They're just things that your relative needed or wanted and bought it.

Back in the day, (way back) the Jewel Tea man would come by and my grandmother would buy all the dishes. I have inherited an entire service for 12 with every little stupid piece that goes along with it. Bread and butter plates, oyster plates, fruit bowls, fingertip bowls etc. I NEVER USE IT! Can't bring my self to get rid of it, and trust me, nobody wants to buy it

@@KristinaGreenwoodI love it! This is such a no nonsense way to look at it. We put these items in a curio of some sort or pack it away, when we could literally take it out and use it, like it is every day dishes. About two years ago I finally started using my “fancy” silverware for everyday use and so glad I did. It was in a curio cabinet to use for holidays and some years I forgot to even pull it out. Now, in all fairness, when my kids were home, I was always coming up with missing silverware, and I didn’t want that to happen to these, but now that they’re all grown, and most of them are out of the house I don’t have to worry about that anymore, lol! ❤

This was a great declutter, it’s fantastic you have got to the stage where a quick and simple run through your kitchen cupboard and drawers is possible . This really demonstrates how far you’ve come in your journey. Also Danni, always remember like you said, your loved ones are not in the ‘things’ and I am fairly positive they would never want you to be troubled by the items you’ve inherited. Thus, you should never feel guilty about donating or rehoming the things you have been given or inherited if they no longer hold the same meaning or are not being used by you and your family. I agree that it can feel ruthless to declutter sentimental items, but that is just an emotion we ourselves are ascribing to what we are doing and not our emotional feeling towards the loved ones who we got the item from. These are two separate emotions, and we shouldn’t confuse the two.

Hi Danni, I have both beeswax wraps and silicone covers to remove plastic wrap from my house. I could only get small silicone covers so I got big beeswax wraps. Beeswax wraps require more maintenance because they need the wax topped up after a while. You can also make and repair them yourself. I prefer the silicone because there is less effort. I use silicone bags from Costco to replace the plastic bags you use for sandwiches/snacks. The aluminium is 100% recyclable if you clean it and put it in a aluminium can so don't panic on this. I also bought large glass serving bowls and lasagne dishes that come with lids so that I don't have to worry about covers.

Hi Danielle, as someone who has faced many decisions over items that belonged to loved ones, I say give yourself grace. Remember the whole reason to declutter is for a peaceful a calm mind and if parting with a sentimental item causes that much conflict, then it defeats the whole purpose. The answer is to honor your grandmother by using those items, you could even use it for your jewelry or hair ties.. One day the decision to part with those sentimental items won’t be so difficult but until then lower the expectations on yourself and enjoy the memories.

danni, i feel total relief now that i know you give objects feelings too! i have soooo many sentimental items that are guilt-infused (oooh, sounds like a bad candle scent) that i’ve given feelings to and it’s made it almost impossible to even consider getting rid of them. even if i rephrase it to “letting go” or “giving” i still feel sad imagining they’re going to be forever sitting on a donation shelf collecting dust and feeling betrayed and rejected. I enjoyed this video so much. I am responding to you contemplating whether or not to keep your grandmother's dishes. I have been a personal organizer for years. I tell my clients if they have been given something from a loved one and they no longer use this item they need to offer that item to someone else in the family that might want to have it. I have a love hate for Goodwill. We need stores like this but Goodwill does not have much competition, at least not in my area. They receive so many donations that the stores end up trashing really nice things. Yes, Goodwill throws items away. They usually allow items a month in their stores. If the item does not sell it is trashed. The workers are told to break the dishes and destroy items before throwing away. This is done as a deterrent for people who dumpster dive. Goodwill is listed as a nonprofit but their goal is to make money. There is a woman's shelter in my community that I encourage my clients to donate their gently used items. The shelter gives these items to the women, for free, who have often left abusive situations with nothing more than the clothes they are wearing. I hope everyone has a wonderful week. I am enjoying this warmer weather.

Hey Danni. I get the whole sentimental thing. Its a difficult one - i think the only advice i would give (if you want it) is never feel obliged to keep something just because it once belonged to someone you love - it’s just a thing. On the other hand - if you love it because it reminds you of them and happy memories, keep it even if it doesn’t have a use! Not everything has to have a purpose - or why else would we have pretty decor pieces that make us happy, or the rocks and shells that the kids have picked up at the beach and given us?! Some things are ok in our homes just because they make us smile - and this comes from a fairly ruthless declutterer!!! I’ve seen some good suggestions about using your grandma’s butter dish as a trinket dish or for hair ties. A good idea if it’s something you want to keep and give a purpose to! ❤

I am a Pull Everything Out At Once person. That ability to see it all and be able to have an entirely empty room to deep clean (ceiling, walls, all of it) helps me, and in decluttering, ONLY putting back what has a home in that newly deep cleaned room has been a big help to me. I work best like that, even if I see something I know I plan to keep. That said, I second your "do what's best for you" advice. I HAVE to do my deep cleaning and purging when my husband isn't home because my method stresses him out SO MUCH that he then can't let go of anything. It's taken time to work it out and understand, but now I just purge, sort, and organize everything, and if there's something of his I think he could pair down, I set that aside for him to see once he's home, and make sure I have a home for it in case he wants to keep it. This means that I do the purging and decluttering on my own (often with my kids' help), but I'm also ok with that. Stuff stresses me out. Clutter makes me tense. I think I've found a balance for us though that is working. And PLEASE, my advice will echo so many others'. Don't get rid of something that belongs to someone else. I did that before. I mean, I had to, it was covered in mold from where a water heater burst and leaked down into the storage space in a place we rented, but I didn't let him see it before I got rid of it and that made him upset. Just the other day, he was looking for something and found a piece of 2x4 in a bin of his things and was like.... "You kept this??" and I said "I promised not to get rid of your stuff without permission." He kept it, the weirdo, but hey, it's got a home in his personal storage bins, so more power to him. LOL! Anyway! Love your vids, love your stories, love your personality. Thanks for sharing and letting us share with you!

Decluttering the kitchen is so hard! Two years ago, i had to donate all my tupperware because it was too overwhelming to try and match the lids. I just packed it all in a recycle bag and dropped it off and bought a new Box of tupperware. Only to find out, i do not use the small tiny containers. So i donated those last time too. But i always find the tupperware to be the hardest to control in my kitchen storage. When my kids were little, i just had a plastic bin, that I threw everything in. Because a lot was for their lunches and sippy cups etc. But now that its just me in the house, I do not use tupperware but for leftovers. Now i don't know if i should be using large bowls with Plastic wrap instead of tupperware. I am lost in that department.

I ❤️❤️❤️this comment so much and I couldnt agree with you more! I too suspect that most if not all of whats in that blue bin will probably go, sometimes it takes me a couple of decluttering rounds to finally let go of certain things, if I see an item(s) that ive tried decluttering more than a couple of times though, I really start to become ruthless with myself. And same, I cannot remember anything (except a couple, very few items) that i've let go of that I miss, most of it I dont even remember and Ive decluttered SO MUCH lol it feels good to get rid of the unwanted, unused, unloved items, my home not only looks so much better but good gravy it feels so much better! And thats such a great way to put it "our loved ones do not live in objects, they are in our hearts and minds" that is so spot on. I have to sometimes remind myself of that. If you ever remodel your kitchen, including new cabinets, consider never again having lower cupboards. Instead opt for pullout drawers, some of which can be deep.

I try pulling everything out but I get overwhelmed by that clutter, so I'll pull one cabinet or even one shelf in the cabinet at a time. If I have to stop mid-way, easier to clean up and I don't have a giant mess sitting there, staring me down.

You are the absolute SWEETEST! Thank you! I am so grateful & so happy you're here with me friend, I appreciate ya so much! ❤️ Linked below was my first really big decluttered and it was at the end of this video when I was showing the end result that I realized I wanted to do that to my whole house, it was sort of the beginning of my journey to minimalism. Its so crazy looking back at that video, I was trying so hard to have it together and act like I had it all figured out, but I ddin't and I didnt listen or stick to my own advice. I also had so much confidence than. I wish I would have continued to research more like I did when I first started, because it made periods of my journey so much harder. Honestly, after that video, I kinda went off onto my own, but its crazy listening to me talk in that video. I really thought I had it all together🤣 but this is my first mudroom declutter, theres a couple other ones too. I never did make it over, but the transformation was really cool to see. Lots of love 🥰🥰🥰 kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6Gwholnl6uBiac

It takes us forever to go through a roll of wrap and/or foil, but Glad Press and Seal is AMAZING. I will not be without that in the house. When you need it, it works like a charm. The non stick foil is second in greatness. it's a gamechanger in the oven for us. Me, the enabler, watching you with the two bowls. "Put the one attached to the saucer in your daughter's room! It's perfect for hair elastics/bobby pins" I'm no help at all, lol. Really try not comparing yourself to others. You KNOW, when it comes to "perfect" channels, you are only seeing what they are showing you. Remember to be kind to yourself. Bask in the glory of how quickly you went through that kitchen. You SHOULD celebrate. You rocked it! I really like Adam Savage's philosophy of "first order of retrieval". Things should live where you look for them, where you need them to be when working.

It takes me forever to go through tin foil too...my mom makes sure to give me an abundance of aluminum foil quite frequently LMBO I think its because shes so obsessed with cooking & baking ha! My mom is the same way, theres no way she would go without the foil and the plastic wrap. And thats actually a really great idea on the saucer, never would have thought to repurpose it like that! Luv it! And I couldn;t agree with you more... a lot of what we're seeing on socially media is not what I would call 100% real LOL I sometimes forget to remind myself that a lot of what im seeing may not be the whole truth, I wish there was more real and less fake on social media, but I guess it is what it is. But yes I agree with you 10000% And now I have to look up Adam Savage, because that is brilliant & so spot on. I'm trying to get in the habit when finding permanent homes for my stuff, in places where there most often used and work the best for us. Always, always so HAPPY to see you here with me friend. LOTS of LUV 🥰

@@ucfhillcollege8296 The non stick is also great for putting on top of something cheesy, like lasagna. No cheese sticking to the foil!

I have found the things that i am constantly shifting around to be the most used items... its the stuff that sits that i feel i am constantly reevaluating. I have literally thought about packing up the contents of each room and pulling items as needed. 'Packing party' i believe its called. A lot of work but pretty cool concept as well!

Wow! Amazing job with this declutter and sharing all the insight. I'm very sentimental and have the toughest time with my mother's and grandmother's china. However, I do use as my everyday china and take pleasure in seeing it and using it. The more contemporary things I own are easier to part with. I donated my stainless steel flatware and use the silver plate that I polish every month or so. I'm retired, so guess I have time for the old fashioned homemaker chores. 😂

Beeswax didn't work for me, they are too stiff for me and after a while they get wrinkled, the size often doesn't fit, they can get dirty and you can't clean them with hot water and after a certain time you should iron them and I was just to lazy to do so

This is not just you but I see this in so many people's videos even people in my own family does this. The coffee pot right next to the stove. Every time you cook something and grease pops and splatters it gets on your coffee pot. So my question to you is why do you put it there and don't you put it in a empty space by your sink where it's easier to clean and keep clean?
