Having boxes of “keep” seems to be such an important strategy in healing in hoarding disorder. I watched other organising / minimising videos, and it does make me feel silly and sad when I can’t let go of the “maybes”. But the extra energy is worth it on the long run, because you’ve made so much progress by carving and sharing your own path… I’ll follow your lead! Thank you ☺️

I LOVE your attitude. And I love that you do it SLOWLY. This is such a great advise for people who have a harder time letting go items. You make the steps comfortable and motivating! I'm sharing this to my mother in law who is a hoarder but wants to declutter but just can't let anything go.

I’m really impressed with how much you let go ... and that you are respectful of your anxiety levels too! I’m impressed with how the boy’s closet is looking less and less crowded. Can I mention a tip? Basically keep short sleeves and long sleeves together. As a Mom that helps me to be better able to define how many of each type of shirt they have .., which helps me define “what is enough”. If I can share 1 other tip it’s about how I define “enough clothes for each zone for each person in the family”. First: Define activities the person does that needs a separate wardrobe. Examples; sleeping, school, work, church, yard work, exercise swimming 🏊, snow ⛄️ wear, etc. Second: I use 4 words to define “enough”: critical, need, want and luxury. I’ll define what I mean by each. CRITICAL: Two outfits. One to wear while the other is being cleaned. NEED: This is barely enough to get from laundry 🧺 day to laundry 🧺 day. WANT: This is what you really prefer to have and are willing to take care of. LUXURY: Anything additional to “wants”. This is where some people say if I bring something else in, something else goes out. Maybe purchases here are more about having what you love most too. After awhile one learns more specifically what kinds of things you prefer to buy. Note: Some categories may overlap (ie. - church and work; exercise and yard work.). Be aware of that too. The more “overlapping” happens, the more fewer pieces of clothing are needed. That’s where people start talking about “capsule wardrobes”. When one knows what colors look good on someone, what they prefer and what they are willing to take care of, then one can create a wardrobe base. One beginning thought 💭 is if it can be used with 3+ other pieces of clothing, the possibilities of outfits goes up. Guys are easier than gals because guy pants 👖 and shorts are quite neutral in colors. Gals, on the other hand, pants 👖 can be a wide variety of lengths, styles, colors, etc. It’s the same for every category ... which leads to it’s easier for gals to have more stuff. We just need to be more mindful of how to use everything than guys. Guys generally don’t want to think 🤔 about all of that. They just want to wear and go and any choice is fine. That’s why most male clothes are neutral in colors. Exceptions are not as many as for females. That’s it for tips. You’re doing so well these days!

I must admit...I got super excited when you said "I have 3 weeks to sell, whatever doesnt sell goes to the sharing table" When decluttering, it is imperative to get the stuff out of the house as soon as possible. So proud of your :-) You are doing an amazing job. Extremely impressed with this PURGE

My jaw hit the floor when you said let if go! Massive declutter and you're so right. They have plenty and you won't miss a thing! Minimal clothes is key in my house. So when the toddler pulls everything out onto the floor, it doesn't take long to put it back away 😁 And to add about the sentimental bin, no big deal! It's organized and labeled in only one bin. Gives you some peace of mind and doesn't stall out any decluttering motivation. I have a feeling maybe a few years down the road you're going to feel the desire to downsize some sentimental stuff to take up a few less bins. But why rush? Progress not perfection. You're doing amazing!

My theory is that the clothes of our kids that we are the most attached to are the ones we put on our kids. I know for me once they were dressing themselves and picking things out themselves that I really stopped being attached to them. (Excluding a couple super special things to them)

I was so impressed when you were done sorting and let go of that pile that was so huge. You need to change the narrative in your head where you tell yourself “look at this pile I am letting go of, I am a hoarder I have to keep something”. Then you filled up that green bin. If you had said “I am so proud of myself for not keeping a bin of clothing my kids can’t wear anymore” that would have been even better. We are all a work in progress, like fine wine we improve with age.

Thank you so so much ❤️🙏🏻❤️ I see what you’re saying...I will try to say that next time and it’s more dealing with my emotions so I don’t allow my anxiety to rise! So maybe I’ll say, it’s okay to feel these emotions and I will allow myself to process them so I can let go. Hoarding is a coping mechanism for all the yucky anxiety & depressed emotions! But I am changing into more healthier coping skills!! Thank you so so much my friend ❤️🙏🏻❤️

Maybe it soothes your anxiety if you don’t take an empty bin for the keeps, but condense with the two that are already in your basement? Just like you did with the Dalmatians 🙂

And maybe two more little tips.. if Brandon outgrows something, put it in with Tyler’s clothes, maybe to the side. This way if you put them away at the end of the season, you already have them all together next year 🙂 And for something that drives me crazy.. 😅 If you hang up your boys pants, could you fold them in the middle, since you are using the clippy-hangers anyway? That way they don’t drag on the ground and they can vacuum their closets 😉 I just had to rewatch your last declutter of kids clothes, and it is amazing 😍 how much less your heart has to keep to stay calm and free of anxiety. 😊 I am so very, very happy for you, it is amazing to see how much happier 🧘🏼‍♀️ and lighter you are 💜 This is astonishing growth in an amazingly short period of time! Please be as often as proud of yourself as you can 💜🥰 🦄

How about putting a "Too Small" bin in their closets? Whenever they try something on and find it doesn't fit anymore they put it there instead of keeping in their closet or the dirty laundry pile until you find it.

I have 3 daughters that were 2 years/3 years between the oldest and youngest. I used to do this. Find a corner of the closet, a bin “too small/too big”, at every season we would quickly go through that pile and pass it to the next one, or if it was too dated/used up, get rid of it. It worked like a charm. I also had a friend who’s daughter was just a bit older than my oldest, and she had a “too big” pile. Same process- a few times a season, we would check to see if stuff now fit/ if my daughter liked it still... once you get this process going you avoid the massive purges, and do little drop offs at your local thrift shop, or sharing table.

We do the same. When seasons change we do a little try on with clothes I am not sure about but in between we declutter as soon as we recognize too small clothes into a „give to cousins“ or donation box.

WoW. Is the Sharing Table at your Church ? Or at a community place ? I know for a fact I would feel so much better if the stuff I got rid of would be loved by another family just abit of how I felt when my family did. I know because my children have attached to clothes that were given to them are a recycle. They love going to Thrifty stores and purchasing high quality items than new and disposable things. We have a vegetarian in our family and my husband makes sure to purchase at least one good used item for them. There is a church in my area that has what's called a Foster Closet. It's large building that foster parents can come and get clothing for the foster children. Usually its emergency situations. Lots of times children are taken from homes in the night are they don't have time to get a bag or anything. Parents can run over to the building and get what they need until they are able to get some of the child's actual clothes. All these clothes would be such a blessing for them.

The great thing about sorting clothes that kids have just recently outgrown is that it's less of an "aww, remember when" situation since it's so recent, if that makes sense. Maybe if you had packed away those clothes for another few years, it might have been harder? Not sure! Anyway, great job! :)

I personally know the relief of getting so many hand me downs when we needed them most, and have tried my best since to pass on clothes as soon as it's outgrown to others. Others who have also expressed their gratitude when money was tight. I've learned over time our hoarded clothes (items) don't serve others, and even sometimes ourselves! 💜💜😍 Fantastic job Ms. Heart! Wow you just blew my mind! The way you were just like "let's just get rid" in such a blasé way, like it wasnt a massive decision for you to get rid of so much all at once. I dont think even I (who hold no particular attachment to clothes) could have done that! You've come so far, and I love being part of your journey. Keeping only 1 box of sentimental out of all that is impressive, and when it comes around to March when you do it again you'll probably find that you can get rid of some of those sentimental pieces and only keep a few you really love, maybe even get them all the ages down to 1 box.

Always cheered to see you! Grown son is switching and sorting his seasonal clothing this afternoon. Donations go to the homeless shelter in town. I tossed some socks and underthings this morning. It is trash night, our traditional day for decluttering = our system for staying current. I also sort out as I launder items and keep a bag in the garage to go out. Mondays are WHB day in Flylady and we are in Zone three, the Master Bedroom, so I always go through my little closet then. You have so much clothing, a children’s center would greatly benefit. I am so happy you are letting go! Many many hugs to you!

Ugh, kid clothes! I find it takes me so long! But finally right now my kids have only right-size, season-appropriate clothing that fits in their closets easily. Then in the basement we have 1 tub each per size 18 months to 7-8 years (youngest wears 12 months and oldest wears 5-6). Plus a box for sentimentals and a tub of 9 mo stuff already up on FB marketplace. When a switchover needs to happen I try to put only the best stuff back in the basement for little sisters and otherwise donate or trash. Keeping the closet to a manageable number is key or else the too-small stuff stays at the bottom. You're doing such a great job!!!

Baby clothes and clothes “the next size or two down” thought 💭: I do need to lose weight, so yes ... I had clothes smaller than what fit me. I stored them for awhile but then one day I “gave myself permission to rebuy that size when I was ready to wear the size again”. Personal (and from my husband) permission gave me peace to let most things go. I kept a few sentimental things, but I have decluttered again and let some of the sentimental things start to go too. It’s harder when one’s body has hoarding tendencies, but possible at one’s personal pace. Defining “enough” may help. When one can “see function and purpose” with what one has, then it helps one be satisfied and grateful with “enough”. My Summer of 2020 Personal Decluttering New Standard is .... Things to keep are: 1. What you actually use in the present. 2. What prepares you for the future (enough). 3. Things from the past that still edify you in needed ways in the present and in the future. Before 2020: 1. Does it serve me, or do I serve it? 2. It’s nice to have what serves us well instead of babysitting a lot of stuff. We need to do other things with our family and time. Lots of people have personal standards for keeping stuff. The more you are aware of your WHY, the more you can focus on that ... and pass along your life’s lessons to others.

Some baby things are just going to simply be sentimental, and that’s okay. I saved a very special outfit to give to our eldest when he became a Dad. Thing is, “they (he AND his wife)” didn’t want it. So, I’m grateful I could offer it, but I’m going to continue to look 👀 for a special home 🏡 to offer it to. I think that will bring me the most peace. I’m looking forward to it too.

Each minimalist is different, just cause some people are comfortable with one tote per child, doesnt mean that it works for your family. Less is best, but less is different for everyone! So what makes you feel good. Maybe in the future you find you need more OR less than you need now, its ok to fluctuate!

Fantastic job!!! That all makes so much sense how you went about going through and deciding about the clothes. Your kids got to wear them and now they will bless someone else. Plus, you will save money because your kids have enough for the winter! Keep it up!!

I used to have a ton of kid clothes- I got rid of most of them and buy very few new pieces now. Less clothes not only equals less clutter, washing is much easier since loads are done more frequently. Items are worn a lot so we get our $$ worth before they outgrow them.

@@ahoardersheart My boys are closer in age than yours so I have the benefit of sharing things simultaneously. Maybe yours haven’t reached the age yet where they just want to wear Adidas pants and shorts year round... when this happens, it will become their minimalist uniform and shopping will be that much easier. You’ve done amazing- you should feel very very proud of yourself.

Wow! What an outstanding declutter. I know that took a lot out of you but you should feel so proud. I just started watching your channel a couple weeks ago and the difference from where you started to now is just amazing! I would love a whole house tour with before and after when you feel comfortable doing it. Thank you for the motivation! Have a wonderful day! :)

Don't worry about sentimental items. Sometime down the line when you would look at YOUR own minimal home, where you would be satisfied and happy... you will look back and say... it was worth it!

That is a healthy compromise considering the amount you will passing onto other families. I can only imagine how tiring it must get to be moving those tubs up and down the stairs twice a year and looking through all those clothes. I'd be like good-bye no more. You have really come along way. I only wish my father could show the same growth but he is endlessly churning and getting in trouble with the city. Speaking of winter it is already snowing today! Weather forecast predicts 3-5" yes in Minnesota we talk about the weather a lot.

Have you thought of putting the Christmas clothes in the Christmas bins? Your boys won’t wear them until it is time to pull out decor and it would save you closet space! It also is less clothes for your boys to pick from each day which can be overwhelming.

I'm so proud of you. You got rid off a lot. I'm also thinking this year is game-changing for you because you're attitude towards your things is less and less singular-object-oriented and getting more and more broad-collective-oriented.

You are so strong going through this many clothes. I have a 3 year old boy and an 8 week old girl. I have decided to keep the sentimental clothing and sell the rest. I have half of a tote total of sentimental clothes and I am more of a minimalist. It’s okay not to get rid of everything. The money will help with my loss of income during maternity leave. I have made over $600. I have also decided to sell most of the large baby things like the bassinet and swing when she grows out of them. If we have another child, I get to buy new things (either new or used but new to me) which is always fun.

hello from germany, hi miss heart, our older one is 3 1/2 and we are expecting our daughter for the 1st advent, when we were planning a second child, i started to keep the clothes of the big ones, i'm quite generous with colors, the little one doesn't have to wear pink and the big one has also red and purple things. i think it's ok to dress unisex, later i pass the things on to people who can use it, i did it before. we also have a friends swap group, of course I kept some baby things from the big one as a memento, the little one is allowed to carry it now, and she will also get a memory box later. I can only say there was always too much clothing, although I paid attention to cotton, organic, self-sewn and good quality, but you always get something for free ..... you made a good job, be safe

From Judy in Australia 🇦🇺. With sentimental stuff, something that worked for me was buying a doona/quilt cover and sewing the “memories” onto it. My son appreciated the memories cover especially when he moved away from home. I used the kid’s club cloth badges, boy’s brigade shirt pieces, footy club numbers and colours etc. It gave an extra level of warmth for winter, and in summer he used it without the inner to place on his bed. ❤️🇦🇺
