In 20 years, I'll be moving to Iceland (hopefully). And here's my plan.. a long term plan :D 🏠 Iceland has always held a special place in my heart, and I dream about calling it my home one day. While waiting for it to happen, I did the natural first step - designed my dream house ;)
Join me in watching the journey of designing an economical, versatile, and picturesque cabin. Let's explore Iceland's beauty, innovative design principles, and the prefabrication approach that's making it possible. The adventure is just a click away.
And a huge THANK YOU to all the viewers and subscribers. Your encouragement keeps me going and helps this channel grow. It means so much to me! 🌟

Prefabrication is a highly anticipated topic - probably the most interesting one discussed so far. Congratulations on your wonderful animation technique. The image is clear and understandable. Iceland is the perfect setting to encourage the idea of building prefabricated houses. Congratulations - I'm delighted, and I know what I'm doing.

Another great video, I love that you lay out the design principles and rules that you use for your designs! I was hoping to see a floor plan of the layout, and maybe even a section or two. I think that would help me to understand it even more clearly, although the renders and exploded axo/animations are beautiful and do a good job of expressing the feeling and construction, sometimes there's no substitute for a flat drawing to describe a project. I could maybe settle for Lumion section-cut views😆 maybe.

Good point! I always publish all flat drawings on my Behance here: www.behance.net/gallery/183105171/Icelandic-dream-cabin-Prefab-House This being said, as an architect, I fully understand your feeling and need for some 2d simple overview. I promise to meke it better in the next video! :)

Thats a dream house right there! Could plop it down anywhere in the nordics! Maybe somewhere outside of Aarhus even.... As a WILD guestimate, how much would such a prefab house cost for someone in DK?

A very interesting design. Your rendering is lively and warm. I feel like it is from an IKEA store. I like the idea of the cabinets on one wall, but I think having the windows beneath may be problematic. Unless you can build in an isolated location, your neighbors will watch you through them. Putting the windows above the cabinets allows for more reflective light off the ceiling, more interior privacy, and potentially larger cabinets. Have you thought about solar panels on the roof?
@architectreflects
@architectreflects 8 ай бұрын
Thanks for your insights! You might have a point about the windows above the cabinets; I'll need to experiment with that arrangement. Currently, I've placed the windows below because when using 'flowing' furniture, it tends to create an illusion of more space-a neat trick we often use. Since I don't anticipate having close neighbors, privacy shouldn't be a major concern. I'm considering finding a plot where I can run a power cable to the nearest road. Iceland is dark for several months each year so it might not be the ideal location for solor pannels, but for other locations, why not? Iceland operates on almost 100% renewable energy, predominantly geothermal, which is abundant there.

Very nice. The blue color wouldn't be my own personal choice. I also would like to have something of an engawa, but maybe that blocks the view too much?

Love the simplicity of this design. It shouldn't so expensive to build. At today's prices, It may not cost more than $5 million dollars. Land will be another $5 million, of course.

You’ll benefit from a porch/lobby to help with bugs and stormy weather. Also, an area for taking off dripping clothes in relative comfort. Hopefully you’ll find a spot that isn’t blighted by midges 👍🏻

Beautiful concept, with about 18 years lead time to perfect it… By then the cost of total energy and waste management self sufficiency will hopefully just be an accepted normal sunken cost. The closing sequence with the borealis answered one question (yes you had considered that), but I’m wondering what your final design will do to enable you to appreciate it from inside; I can’t imagine laying on the floor to see it through the low north facing windows will appeal for long…

Hey Konrad, I love your videos! How do you make these beautiful landscapes? Any chance I could do them and these kinds of (beautiful) animations with Sketchup and Enscape? Or is it only possible by using Lumion? Thanks!
@architectreflects
@architectreflects 8 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! For landscape I use mix of my own model and Quixel Megascans liblary that is for free :) It is just quite heavy and likes to consume a lot of ram... Enscape is great for some quality interiors but I do not have much experience with exterior renders so I am not the best person to ask. I know many of my colleges use enscape for preview of they work and still images. I am not sure however if it would be able to handle heavy 3d models as good as lumion does.

Mind-blowing, the overall concept is amazing! I am curious to know your reasoning behind the exterior color being blue, given that you want to reduce the footprint why not make it in earthly tones or some sought of visual camouflage to reduce the visual footprint in the pristine natural scenery? Secondly, the remoteness of the cabin dictates a self sustaining off-grid setup in terms of energy requirements and waste management. I would love to know how you plan on tackling those issues. Lastly, being a car geek cannot help but notice the Rivian R1S! The extreme climate of Iceland may require indoor storage of vehicles specially BEVs to preserve range and battery life.
@architectreflects
@architectreflects 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for your thoughtful comment! 💙Let's dive into this step by step. The choice of the color blue for the cabin is rooted in Scandinavian tradition, and it takes inspiration from the seamless blend of blue hues with Iceland's often foggy skies and the overall atmospheric ambiance. ☁ In terms of utilities, electricity is typically routed underground alongside gravel roads, making it a feasible solution for cabins located a few kilometers away from the main road. Heating in Iceland is frequently achieved through a single borehole, harnessing geothermal energy, or, as a last resort, electrical heating. As for sewage management, an underground tank would be necessary, requiring periodic maintenance a few times each year. The specific options available would depend on our chosen location. Looking ahead, I'm optimistic that car technological advancements over the next two decades will likely mitigate any concerns related to the car's compatibility with the environment. 🚗kzbin.infogaming/emoji/7ff574f2/emoji_u1f4a1.png

Makes sense with the color choice. I am amazed to know that the Icelandic grid is able to route power to such remote locations. Honestly, for me a cabin like this begs sustainability so being energy independent with solar or geothermal and battery backup is a requirement but it can be cost prohibitive. Once again, very thoughtful design but the car stays outside! 😢

It is good then that 100% of Iceland electricity are obtained from renewable-energy sources :) But I know what you mean when you talk abouth energy idependence... Thanks again for feedback :)

Some practical concerns Only one bathroom for up to 12 people? On the outside, maybe some hand railings for the bicycle and kayak section, since handling these things at height could be risky if there is much wind How are you going to clean those big windows?
@architectreflects
@architectreflects 8 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for comment! 12 people is quite an extreme situation and 90% of time it would be only for me and my wife. I would like to avoid making 2 bathrooms only for these rare moments. As for the second point all of the equipment wonld be hanging on sliding rails so that I could reach them form ground. Cleaning big windows is not a problem with modern tools like this one: s1.kaercher-media.com/mam/95072350/mainproduct/194110/d0.jpg I have one bigger window at home and this is how I can reach up to 5 meters.
