Having found the maple under all that ghastly paint, I’m afraid I’d have stopped there because maple has such beautiful grain and a moire effect in the light that your later staining drowned out. If you want to preserve the natural wood then advice is Basically de-waxed shellac mixed with a dark transtint dye (I usually do 10 drops per ounce of shellac). Apply liberally, wait a minute and wipe off. Wait about half hour and block sand with 120 - 150 until most of the original maple is bare (except the stripes). Repeat 3-4 times and the stripes will jump out and slap you in the face ;-). Topcoat with 2-3 coats GF armrseal (or lacquer if you don't like a yellow-ish look on the white maple) and call it done.. Oil based finish really does a better job though :-)
@FurnitureFlippingForProfit2 жыл бұрын
Wow! Thanks for the info. What would you have done around the edges where there was no wood grain? The edges looked like mdf but they were wood. I wanted it darker because that is more popular today and I felt it would sell faster.
@philomenahearn17172 жыл бұрын
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit I think I’d have celebrated the contrast and do as you did with a dark stain. After all there is almost black in the inlay… so there is the contrast with light and dark there.

@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit maybe use a black stain to offset the inset wood. What a beautiful treasure underneath all that ugly paint!
@rockshot1002 жыл бұрын
@@philomenahearn1717 My thoughts exactly, the base can only be black so why not use ebony for the edges? This was meant to to have high contrasts as you say. Why else bother with the expense of that white maple? It is still a cute table, despite it all. This has to be the most interesting and controversial flip of YT.
@rockshot1002 жыл бұрын
I am curious as to what de-waxed shellac is. Never heard of it. I agree that you cannot beat oil based anything, I have been doing this for almost 40 years, could be that I am just used to it? I often use household bleach to get the red, yellow tones out of the wood. Some of the topcoat poly water based, I do like, but sometimes hard to level. Thinning with water often resolves that, just use more coats. None of this stuff is fool-proof, so you do have to be careful, as you know. I have NEVER seen anybody test the back with Q-tip. The polyurethanes also tend not to yellow over time, a couple that "Lemon's to Lemonade" recommends never yellow or darken. She is VERY honest, but can't remember the brands. Also I am not familiar with lacquer. Is that stuff waterproof? That is the reason I don't use it and like the results with the polyurethanes. Also love the look of a wax over the poly, it gives it that hand rubbed sheen, with little effort. Thanks for the tips. Love the idea of a very subtle moiré effect on this maple. Neither of us would have gone this dark, but her result is not exactly "terrible".

Should have stopped at one coat of Dark Walnut, now the inlayed wood just blends in with the rest of the wood. It needs to stand out. Would have only used Black Walnut for the edges, the top part was perfect with that blonde color.

When I saw that wood inlay underneath that latex paint I got so excited, then that beautiful wood veneer going in different directions, I was shocked it was ever painted. It’s almost as if someone used it as a work table? Thank you to your friend for finding it by the dumpster and to you of course for saving it from the landfill. It would make a beautiful kitchen table (thinking of my kids in their new apartment) with 4 nice chairs. And well done on the staining, when you had that blotchy spot after the first coat, I was afraid it was going to be an issue as you applied more coats (I thought about maybe it needed a pre-stain wood conditioner). But the more coats, the more gorgeous it got!💜

What a lovely little table. Painting over that beautiful inlay was a crime! Just a thought, but would oxalic acid have given you a better result,than bleach, to remove that dark staining? You obv have to do the whole table (after masking off the inlay), to give an even colour, and it has to be washed/rinsed off with water after it’s worked it’s magic, but it’s very effective at removing staining on wood.
