The Extreme Value Theorem states that if a function in continuous on a closed interval [a,b], then the function must have a maximum and a minimum on the interval. This makes sense: when a function is continuous you can draw its graph without lifting the pencil, so you must hit a high point and a low point on that interval. Created by Sal Khan.

Anmol Empire LMAOO, the teacher removed my calculator cuz he said it was programmable (I wasn't the only one) although I didn't know so I started crying at the beginning and he ended up giving me his. I also came late because I drove to get a croissant for at the end to get it confiscated. It went good doe and I'm taking linear algebra now

Thank you for taking the time to make videos on Extreme Value Theorem and on Mean Value Theorem. We are just learning how to do these theorems in class. Do you think you could post examples on how to use these theorems in another video? Thanks for all that you do!!!

I am taking an intensive and very mathematical course in portfolio optimisation. After five lectures and classes of great confusion, as well as trying to read various calculus and real analysis textbooks (with all that useless math lingo, definitions, theorems and proofs), I watched this and two other Kahn videos and everything suddenly became as clear as bell. Thank you!

Extreme value theorem refers to estimate the tail distribution, i barely find this video related to the concept. So dudes, if you're looking for EVT, GEV (generalized extreme value), GPD (generalized pareto distribution), POT (Peaks over threshold) etc you're on the wrong page/

Sorry, but it's not clear moment - if you draw flat line, how can you define maximum or minimum? It's impossible, because all points are equal in this case and if you take one of these points you can define it both as minimum or maximum. So what's the trick here?
@jacobeastin3438
@jacobeastin3438 7 жыл бұрын
the function doesnt have a max or min but the line has a min which is a point, a certain point can be lower or higher than another point on a straight diagonal line
@annamauroam
@annamauroam 6 жыл бұрын
that's why the function is between or equal to the maximum or minimum points. Because there can be cases (like the function being a constant - a flat line) where f(x), min, and max coincide. If the function is y=5, then min and max are 5
