Undertaking a P&O Ferries 'Car park Shopper' round-trip duty-free shopping trip aboard the Pride of Canterbury from Dover UK to Calais and back again without disembarking in France, the whole journey should have taken around five hours.
However, on the return journey to Dover the winds picked up considerably. Around five miles off Dover an announcement was made to advise of a short delay of around forty minutes as other ferries needed more time to manoeuvre within the confines of the port.
Later, were granted permission to enter...the winds at this time were approaching from the south-west meaning we kept close to the Southern Breakwater of Dover Harbour to ensure as much space as possible between us and the Eastern Arm Breakwater on our starboard side to prevent collision.
Coming to rest within Dover Harbour only one tug was available to assist with our manoeuvre onto the berth. The wind now between Severe Gale 9 and Storm 10, fortunately it was low tide which prevented waves from cascading over the port's breakwaters.
The single tug not being powerful enough, Dover Port Control gave us a green proceed aspect and we duly headed back out to sea where it was thought to be safer, as there would be no chance of us drifting and colliding with other ships.
As soon as we left the Port of Dover the winds picked up to Beaufort Scale Severe Storm Force 11 - HUGE towering waves hitting the ships' bow and starboard quarter.
P&O Ferries Pride of Burgundy followed us out of the port - truly mammoth waves engulfed her forward superstructure and blew over her funnel!
Continuous announcements from the bridge officers kept passengers up to date with the situation and reassured us that both we and the ferry were safe.
Complimentary meals and hot/cold beverages were offered to passengers. Customer service was excellent - second to none - well done!!
A Belgian band who was travelling to the UK were granted permission to play to the ships' passengers to keep spirits high and to distract us from the lengthy delay.
We finally arrived and successfully berthed in the Port of Dover some nine hours late - around 14hrs after I initially left Dover!
More videos of my storm crossings can be found in my KZbin playlist 'When travelling doesn't go to plan'.

Well done to the band playing to keep up the passenger's morale. My grandmother's cousin was Wallace Hartley, he was the bandmaster of the Titanic and sadly he did not have such a happy outcome.

We were in Calais a few years before this was made. Ships were stopped from entering Calais because the following sea and wind strength meant they couldn’t actually stop! Two large ocean going tugs were eventually brought in to act as “catchers”, to stop the ferries hitting the harbour walls. We got the train after that! 😆

Back in 1988, I took a ferry from mainland Iceland to Heimaey it was OK getting there but a few days later getting back was a totally different story, as it was an incredibly rough crossing, there were quite a few Swiss people on that ferry, huddled in groups, with oversized vomit buckets, wearing life jackets and in tears, that was the onboard entertainment "sorted" LOL, it took 6 hours, to do a 4 hour crossing and even after arriving on dry land, nearly everyone was still wobbling all over the place, as they walked.

one does have to keep in mind that there are a ton of officers and crew up on the bridge, on an airplane, often only two people are reasonably in the loop (the chief-steward might know something, but, most non-pilot crew have no idea of the action/situation up front, and even less of the wider context)... there is simply not the manpower on most modern planes to maintain PR... when things become challenging, there is no time one is not at full capacity with just flying the plane... it is all they can handle in a serious situation where an announcement would make sense.

Hi James. I was on an afternoon return crossing in 1990! The wind and conditions were diabolical. My dear old dad always took his marine band receiver on our frequent trips over (Both local to Dover Dad from Deal, I'm from Margate) and I vividly recall we were in a queue of vessels awaiting enter bsvk into Dover. Being ship number 3, we'd been sheltering under the cliff round by St Margaret's, when Dad suddenly gave out a loud hooray. Turns our, a kadi on board or ship had her waters beak and was going into labour. A decision was made to have the two port rugs ready as soon as we crossed the breakwater to steady us and guide us into a berth. I've never been so relieved to have reached dry land. The vessel was literally pitching and rolling what felt like 45 degrees. And the stench of sick was appalling. One positive outcome, in my haste to get back to Valais port fro. Eastenders Wine marquee, I'd forgotten to call in fur my ciggiy allowance, and I was suffering a dreadful chest cold. The combination of the crossing memory and the thought of smoking put me off fags for life. I'm 57 now and have never smoked since 😊🙏. Thanks for jogging my memory, I appreciate it. And tbdnks also to A2B via Sea, on TV for a brilliant video. 🙏✌️

Several years ago myself and a group of friends took a ferry ride during conditions similar to this. When we arrived at port the winds were so strong that it was all us girls could do to even walk off. Must have been blowing hurricane force or more. We literally had to lean against the wind to try and walk while holding arms.

@@windysilkgirl hi. I have been at sea in hurricane force winds (sustained wind speed of over 86mph) but, we didn't depart in that weather - the storm blew up mid channel. I have seen ships depart the ports in storm force 10 with the aid of tugs; anything more than that the ship may get blown into the piers and breakwaters of the port. It all depends on the wind direction, wave height, size & type of ferry.

@@A2BviaSeaonTVmakes sense we left in 50-55 knot winds but encountered 85 knots and when we docked it let up some but immediately began blowing close to 100 once we were off the ship. I’ve never felt wind like that before absolutely nothing you could do but try not to get blown away.

Oh, this is nothing. I remember a crossing from Dover to Calais in early 96. While we had dinner at dear old Taste of India in Dover, there were a few snowflakes tumbling down and we had a good laugh. Snow in the channel, hahaha... When our vessel, the Pride of Calais, departed Dover with a delay of two hours, there was a good inch of snow on the ground. Crossed in a blizzard with force 10 winds, gusting 12. They had us waiting for another hour outside of Calais, so the captain turned the ship's nose into the wind to keep the movement down a little. By then, most people didn't even bother going to the bogs anymore and just barfed where they were sitting while the crew were busy mopping it all up with industrial vacuum cleaners. My better half had brought a box of diigestives upstairs, put them into a clean (!) sick bag and ate them with a big grin. Sent a few more of those green faces over the edge. 🙂 Eventually, we got the green light in Calais and they turned the vessel in the right direction. That's when a big wave hit us plain from the side, the vessel took a hefty sway to port side and the hole bar came crashing out of the shelves, bottles, glasses and all. When we left Calais, we had trouble seeing the road. In the end, we wrecked our car less than two miles before reaching our hotel in Boulogne. Surely a trip we'll never forget.
