EXTREMELY Corroded Copper Tea Kettle - Perfect Restoration

ABOUT THE COPPER TEA KETTLE
In this video I will be restoring a copper tea kettle that has been sitting in a barn with a leaky roof longer than I've been alive. I bought this kettle at an estate sale in eastern Idaho, I was immediately awestruck at the thick crystalline green patina it developed. The previous owner was in her late 80's and had unfortunately just passed from covid-19. Her family was selling all of her possession's and that's how I was able to stumble across this beautiful forgotten treasure. I offered her family $10 for it and took it back home with me.
After doing some research on the internet I was able to find out that this tea kettle was manufactured by a company called "Baker Hart & Stuart" who made copper and porcelain cookware and went out of business in the early 1980s.
ABOUT THE RESTORATION
This was my first official restoration ever. The disassembly went along pretty
smoothly, until I noticed exactly how bad the condition of this kettle actually was. The rust pits were a real challenge to sand down, it took over two days to get it perfectly smooth. There were also way more dents and dings than I could see with the patina still attached. After I sand blasted the nuts that hold the handle on I realized that I had to learn how to copper plate quick haha. Overall I'm really proud of the way this restoration turned out considering its initial state. I hope that you and all of the people who watched were entertained. The colours of the corrosion look nice from a distance but up close it looks mouldy af. I found it very satisfying to watch this restoration, which is handy as that's why I came here 😄 Thanks for sharing

I recommend getting yourself an old trailer hitch ball and polish it up. They make for good anvils to reshape rounded things just like this teapot. Best thing is, they fit inside the teapot if you have the right vice or mounting jig! We use these in metalsmithing to form rounded surfaces (and sometimes teapots too!) edit: another method you can use is to mount a hammer into the vice and use that as your inside "anvil" surface, and then use your mallet on the outside to tap it gently. The key is to keep the material (teapot wall in this case) in between both hammer surfaces.

You don't hammer on the dolly hammer just off it ... you stretch the metal directly hammering in and ditch the hitch ball go get autobody hammer and dolly set . Many great videos on here on how it works

It isn't until you see a video like this that you can come to appreciate just how much work was needed to make something as humble as a kettle in the olden days. In the modern age of mass production and throwing out of sound but old and obsolete items, we've forgotten that often times, something like that kettle might have been a treasured family heirloom and passed down the generations from mother to daughter. And it sheds light on why so many old kitchens hadracks that bright shiny copper pots and pans would hang from!

I used to do sandblasting for a living. Depending on the fineness of the sand it does remove a fair bit of the material. And if there is a hole in your glove and the sand hits your finger, stings like a bastard. :)

You can use a multitude of different mediums with a sandblaster depending on how delicate the piece is. Glass bead medium is ideal for things like copper because the round shape prevents damaging softer surfaces and it also puts a decent shine on the surface minimizing the polishing you have to do later. If you have something extremely delicate, ground walnut shell or corn cob medium is the way to go.

Scrubbing with a plastic bristle brush and a salt and vinegar paste could have worked too, even without metal brushing the oxide off first. But there's no denying that this came out looking beautiful and it seemed the copper was thick enough to withstand the sanding of high spots without developing holes. Typically the insides of copper kettles are tin plated/clad to avert excessive amounts of copper getting into the water. This would be a good idea for any kettle being put to practical use and would be another guard against developing holes.

I love your orange mallet. It reminds me of a little yellow hammer my baby brother had. He was just learning to pull himself up to standing, while holding tight to the playpen rail. I took one of his crib sheets that was in the laundry basket, put it over my head like a ghost, snuck up to his playpen while he was standing & said, "Boo!" Beautifully restored and presented. Your editing and restoration skills are superb. I noticed that the “Patina Brigade “ didn’t like your work, however I have been restoring things for a few years now and resale of an item rusted or covered in “patina” differs very little, if at all in resale value. I personally like a clean restoration like you have done as it shows respect to the item and enabling it to be used for another few generations. Let’s face it, who would make a cup of tea in that kettle before you restored it?

I understand that it's much more useful as a kettle once it's been restored... but that patina was so beautiful! It's a shame to have lost it.

Well, you can't preserve it, but it should be possible to take a flake in to the hardware store and color-match some paint.
