Defensible space around your House in a residential area? Besides, when the wind blows the heat and fire beyond you capability there's nothing you can do.

Lots of these homes were as fire save as any structure can be. California requires certain fire safe practices and sends people and even drones out to make sure we all comply. Defensible space is mandatory in most cases. What is not as well managed is the winds. You can't get helicopters or water dropping planes up in 100 MPH winds. You can keep reservoirs full of water when some years we are lucky to even get 3 inches of rain total for the entire. Defensible space only goes so far.
