With my anxious, dominant natured, hyper-reactive rescue dog, I went from not being able to get within 50ft or so of a dog without extreme reactivity, Beckman's methods enabled me to get him to meet other dogs. It still requires a slow approach with dogs he has not met, but his reactivity is now 95% less in nature. When i walk him, I will approach other dog walkers and hopefully get him more and more desensitised, using the mindset of 'Dogs fix dogs'.

I’ve had the same experience with our rescue. It’s been a long slow process but I’m so glad we kept exposing him to people and dogs so he could work through this extreme fear that was limiting him so much.

This is great. 2:05... Circle of trust.. 2:32...process 4:25... Dog needs to get reinforced by scary stimulus... 4:41.. (notice dog on sit command outside circle of trust) 5:00.. dog is further away from the owner, and outside circle of trust... 5:34... Treats should come from scary stimulus... No matter what trainers tell you... 5:55... Desensitization phase,.... Just takes time... 6:30.. now back at square one to meet dogs... 7:08... Going slow with Prince... So not to overwhelm her.. 7:44.. separate the owners... At a distance from the dog... 8:32... Happiness..(for most of the rest of the session) by being there I'm involved in the happiness... 11:54... "Get the dogs with dogs today... So it flows from the training process".. 2 hours later 4 hours later etc. 13:15.. treat from scary stimulus 13:30... Make sure first dog to meet is the treat (compatible, friendly) because a new dog is a scary stimulus... 14:10... Today's work fell under classical conditioning, which is feelings based, happiness based...

Wonderful demonstration. My female dog has reasons to be fearful - like a lot of rescues from abusive situations. Being persistent in encouraging her into novel, "uncomfortable" situations with other calm, understanding dogs allowed her to conquer her fears and learn proper dog etiquette. It's such a joy to see dog that used to cower in fear playfully jump pirouettes to encourage other shy dogs to play. Teaching dogs resilience by overcoming their fears in safe environment is a gift that keeps on giving. People that "protect" their dogs from other dogs and other things they fear are doing more harm than good in the long run, as the dog just grows more fearful and neurotic.

Gorgeous dog! I’m kinda glad Joel mentioned the weird movements, cause I was thinking: is it just me or is this dog weirdly jumpy and bouncy? To me it looks like play, but kinda nervous play. My dog freaks out by these wiggly dogs and immediately tries to ‘convince them’ to chill out by fiercely growling and nipping. Needless to say I leash her up when I spot an extra wiggly dog. It’s her biggest pet peeve.

@rptrick79
@rptrick79 Ай бұрын
I wouldn't think of it as being an "influencer" to me that is more people selling crap than anything. Think of it as helping people and dogs as Joel does maybe. You just happen to be videoing it to get it out there. The biggest part of the video footage is showing the proof of how you do it versus being in a "camp" that claims they can do the same thing with only +R but there's ZERO proof. And then there's money you may make from those videos which is just a byproduct in my opinion. As for tips, I'd decide what kind.of dogs you'd like to work with then if it's anything and everything, soak in as much as you can freely, read books watch this guy and a few others. Make sense of why they do what they do in various situations etc and keep an open mind. Joel has a ridiculous amount of videos and if you pay attention you're gonna pick up very small details that are actually big going from his background to now dog training. It's like listening to Eminem for me, always pick up something new from a song I've listened to zillions of times. Hope that last part makes sense lol.

A lot of programs exist that provide service dog training to veterans. I would find one local to you and ask if you can volunteer to help and learn training techniques that way you get training, experience, and a reference. Another way would be to partner with a local shelter. They need volunteer dog walkers and trainers and could help you get the experience and references as well. Good luck! I'm also prior military and part time dog trainer and it's very rewarding. Thanks for your service brother 💪

Nearly 11 months ago i adopted a rescued welsh short haired red Boarder collie who will be 2 years old this may. Though she is young, she came with so many issues that it was very difficult to pin point separate until she started trusting me and my two sons. The trust actually sorted some of her issues out, well enough to be able to pin point her main issues which I am working on now and the main one is exactly like this Dog is having. Iv managed to help her lots to become a little more confident and relaxed around some Dogs and people but its still hit and miss at the moment. Hard work for sure but she will get there. My 1.5 yr old rescue is very similar to this dog. We have had him since 12 weeks. It was around 9 months that this extreme fear began. I used these methods that Joel is describing and our dog is now about 75% better. It takes a lot of exposure to people and dogs and time, but it does work. I felt very defeated at times through this process because he would takes steps backwards, but it does work! I’m SO glad that I stuck with the training and didn’t give up on him. I love all of your videos, I’m usually a silent watcher and don’t comment much but one of my pet peeves is in this video and I just wanted to comment on it. I’m not sure if it was Joel’s muzzle or the owners but I hate seeing muzzles that don’t allow the dog enough mouth room to pant, it’s really important in controlling their body temperature which is especially needed when the dog is stimulated and playing with other dogs. Not trying to be a Negative Nancy just wanted to point it out, Great video again! 😊

Today my husband, dog and I were sitting outside Starbucks. I have a large 75 pound lab/rot/shepherd mix; a Mexican special blend. There was a guy there with a one-eyed black cane corso/mastiff puppy mix. The puppy was probably 50-60 pounds. He growled and lunged at my dog; he snarled at my husband and tried to bite him. I almost told the dog owner to run to visit you because these were both near miss attacks. I cannot understand someone bringing a dog to a restaurant that attacks people. I believe that the Cane Corso will be the next dog to flood the animal control due to their intense strength. This dog is definitely heading toward a bite of a human and/or dog. The weird thing is my dog did not react, and normally she gives attitude back. Not sure if she was scared or what was going on with her.

@steamer2k319 what if I'm not healthy and youngish and I need it for piece of mind. Is it a good or bad idea to always use it, concerning the dog? If the dog is good on it, is there any reason not to use gentle leader for walks.
@steamer2k319
@steamer2k319 Ай бұрын
@@carlajones7399 If the dog is comfortable and well behaved, I wouldn't see any reason why it couldn't be used. It doesn't sound like either of you are going to be consistently applying excessive force through it. There's maybe some concern if you later decide that extra training would be helpful. At that point the dog may've become habituated to the gentle leader and it might be less effective as a training aid. If that happens, you could switch to a prong collar or slip leash, which are both fine and can be effective in their own way.

My dog definitely has a fear of people. I don't know why because not 1 single human has ever been even slightly mean to her. But she fears strangers. She loves kids and other animals, though. She wasn't raised around children, either. She's 12 years old now and never ever has she even attempted to bite anyone. She just has a distrust of adults. WHY do people do this? They will stare a strange dog in the eyes, talk to them and then wonder why the dog barks at them? I *_always_* tell people to just ignore her and don't talk to her and she'll be fine. Sure enough, every single time when her behavior is ignored (by them) and they are not staring her in the eyes or talking to her, she will go up to them and sniff them. After that, things are just fine. I wish people understood why not to stare a dog (especially a strange dog) in the eyes. I guess it's just a human thing, huh?

I need help very badly. I rescued a female husky off the streets 2 weeks ago. Ive taken her to the vet she is placed to be about 4, or 5 years old. I brought her home. I have 4 other dogs. I had let them out and brought her into the home. She was here about a week. I have kept my 4 dogs away from the rescue dog. She is in our mudroom and only has access out there, and our back yard by herself to use the bathroom and get some exercise. On a cable line. The first day i brought her home i had went out to see how she would react and she bit my finger. No big deal. The next day my husband went out there she bit him bc he tried to pull my daughters softball glove out of her mouth. She had been good since with us. She started eating after 2 days. We then decided after a week of her being here to introduce her to one of our dogs. Sadly.. at the time i didnt know about a muzzle. My husband and i had them both on leashes and brought them together in the yard. My male dog turned around and she snatched his leg and ripped his skin back. (Hes okay got some staples. More mad about the cone) anyways. Ive had her for 2 weeks now. And ive kept my 4 away from her. She is very loving towards me. She hasnt showed any aggression towards me. I went out and laid with her last night on her bed and she curled up around my stomach and slept. I now know muzzle. However how do i go about this seeing as i have a pack who know this is their home and she thinks this is her home as well. Im scared and lost on introducing her again. Obviously with a muzzle but how do I know if theyll be okay for the moment and then fight or if everything will be okay after the meet?

Its true. 220lbs mali. 245lbs Freuchie. 😮😮😮😮😮😮 But mayb the mali hit you with 17 of them before the Freuchie has its next thought 😂😂😂 My dog holding my arm time froze then I noticed out of the one eye still open he lowerd himself down again. 100% fully controlled balance he rise up like alligator skulk back like cobra. But he was still furious. Growling snarling barking at the dogs who started it. It's been a night mare 18mnths now the few times I got my dog to walk calm and he's trying his best to ignore them then we walk right into the last teenagers who think to bark at a dog. So he challenge accepted. They stfu heads down walk on. Thought he was a good boy 😂😂😂 realised I can barly contain him when animated they done Phucked up. Especially cos I was angry they'd bark so I told him fine show em. Ignoring dogs then 3 bark fury at him and he's offended to his core little 💩 💩 💩 dare bark at him.

Do dogs automatically know that a hand shake means friends? I’ve watched you for ages but just now realized that this can’t be the case, right?😂

That's what dogs do though... if spends 5 min sniffing the same spot then yeah that might be too much but all you have to do is clap and say no and move away from the spot.

I refer to it as a pmail. My dog reads and answers the neighbors dog pmails most every day.

Congratulations on not neutering your dog! Allow him to sniff when you can. It allows them to use their brain as intended and will tire them out in a positive way that leaves them very content. When you don’t want him to sniff put him in a heel command.

Hey Joel, so how do you prevent the food seeking in strangers? Also, I emailed you about the podcast. Through the website. I'd love to discuss raising the owner-trained watch dog. Thats what mine does, he's not a 30k dog just a family pet, but that guards our property and safely! He's an intact pitty too, can be around kids, all dogs, off leash and everything. Cheers buddy

Sorry nope can’t stand these videos. They make me anxious and upset. Joel is too rough with dogs. I’m part of the purely positive camp. Wish Joel were more positive.

Welp, that didn't take long. You are giving your own "camp" a worse name and unfortunately you don't see it or don't care. He uses positive reinforcement all the time, when it will work! I've actually sent you a video and you deleted your own rude comments seemingly because of it and 97 persuading comments.then you put your flip flops back on and started this crap again the next week. It's like 50 first dates or some shit.. 🤔
