EXTREMELY GRAPHIC: Live Kill and Twice Cooked Blue Crabs

Louisiana girl here. ;) Blue crabs and crawfish are my specialty. Americans/whatever pay more for males because they've generally got more meat when harvested at the right time. Also, female blue crabs usually have the red tips on their claws. Although males are more saught-after, the statement about how female blue crabs taste better is true. :D It's the smaller compartments of meat separated by thinner divisions that discourage people; It's a lot more work to "clean" female crabs of their meat. lol. But they are more fatty and flavorful.
p.s. fresh caught blue crabs that are alive when you bring them home but die during the purge process are 100% fine to cook as long as they are cooked within 1 hour of death.

When I was growing up in Maryland, it was illegal to keep female blue crabs even if she doesn't have any eggs with her. A Female blue crab can lay trillions of eggs throughout it's lifetime, so long as it isn't killed. I live in Virginia now and they serve "She Crab Soup" all over the place. It's a shame. If Virginia would stop the catching of female blues the numbers would bounce back in three to five years. Oh, the repetitive comments the cameraman kept making about "It's too much work" wasn't properly taught how to pick a crab. If you pull the legs, back fin and claw out just right, most of the meat will come out with that pull, then there isn't much left to go after. Doesn't get any easier than that.
