Extremely High & Low Tides in Guernsey 21/8/09

This happens in Guernsey about once a year. We have one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, 30 feet or 10 metres. The high tide on this day was 10.1m and the low tide was 0.5m above chart datum. Luckily for the shops opposite the Victoria Marina there was a high pressure weather system over us at the time, because otherwise the shops and the road would normally get flooded out with sea water at this tide height.

In Jersey, there was extraordinarily high and low tide on Tuesday 18th March 1980. The tide at 0727 in the morning was 12.3m (40.4ft) and by 1416 that afternoon the tide had ebbed to -0.1m (-0.3m) below the St Helier Harbour Datum. I heard a story that it was possible to walk from St Catherine’s to Gorey Harbour on the beach.

Nice video as usual. I've seen these highs and lows myself when I've been there on hols. Paddling on the pavement in fact!

There is about 20ft of water in the main harbour at even that very low tide but you wouldn't get into any marinas or drying out areas or even to the fuel pontoon until the sea was much higher.

@bapyou Thanks for the comment but I always go for the "show a range of shots from the same place" kind of method like TV companies do. The theory being (which I have read in mags and books) that people get easily bored of the same angle shot for lengthy periods. I used to do lengthy scenes of family holiday videos many years ago on VHS but when I watch them back even I get bored watching them and know they went on too long.

@MsLammy88 Nope it stays where it is here. The seabed is so compacted sand here that very little sand moves. It might happen where you live if the sand is soft or in a storm. If it did change regularly Admiralty maps would have to constantly change the depths on their sea charts.

In the Channel Islands near Cherbourg and St. Malo, France. Google 'Guernsey Channel Islands' and you will see.

Good video. But, for a more effective presentation, I suggest taking video from the exact same spot showing the high and low tide. Your viewers aren't as familiar with the location as you are. Therefore, the constantly moving camera is disorienting and not as effective as it would be if you'd have stayed in one spot and filmed. Just a thought.

I wonder what's the potential of this place for tidal energy.

@MsLammy88 The sand doesn't go anywhere, it stays in the same place.

@MrBooojangles Well, yes, but looking at what you've videod, it's difficult for someone unfamiliar with the place to get their bearings. The scene keeps changing. __ Maybe a tripod? Set it in different spots at this locale, but do some high tide/low tide shots from those exact same spots. That, to me, would highlight the tide phenomena more dramatically. __ Anyway ... they're your videos. Cheers.
