As a teacher, I gotta say Matt is right about the reading thing. It's simple words so you get used to recognising them without actually having to read them. It's hard to explain but it's sort of like seeing the word as a shape. Kids books tend to have a lot of short, repeating phrases so it's easy to get the hang of what different words look like upside down.

about the rubiks cube thing- after memorizing the algorithm it is really easy, but there was this guy I saw that solved a cube, mixed it, got another cube, solved it, studied the mixed up one, and with his eyes CLOSED he made the one he had just solved, look exactly the same. and then he solved them both. again, with his eyes closed. As a teacher, I found it funny how amazed they were at the ability to read a book to a class upside down. I teach Grade 1 (first grade) and could not imagine not being able to read to them.
