Up here in BC Canada I’ve landscaped for ten years and while we do bag grass (until summer when it’s more feasible to mulch), we blow the grass onto the lawn. I would suggest that if your employees want to listen to music while they work, they should have the cord underneath their clothing, removes almost all chances of it snagging on things and causing issues. Up here you can get ear protection with built in radios or auxiliary ports for playing music.

you might explain the reason behind why people dont bag. I'm not sure if you remember me from previous comments, but here's what I do for the company I work for, for when it comes to where we put the grass. If we know the grass is grown super thick (like ST. Augustine grass), we will bag it, however to save time, we keep going even if the bagger is full. Eventually this will leave lines of thatch every 2 passes, which we'll either pick up with the bagger after the first empty, or spread around with the blower so that thatch clumps don't kill what grass is under them. Plus having some grass clippings on the lawn is beneficial as it provides the lawn with nutrients as the clippings break down. What we do with the clippings we bag is bring them back to the shop to either add to a compost, or burn to create pot ash which can be used as partial fertilizer for potted plants and or garden bed plants. So what you're doing is entirely professional. As far as striping is concerned, it's an entirely optional thing which customers could ask for, and as you mentioned, none of your customers ask for it. For mowing height, a lot of the customer's I am given (I don't own the company I work for, but I do work the properties either solo, or with 1 other) have St Augustine grass which looks horrendous when cut lower than 3 1/2. But if it's a healthy lawn and happens to be centipede, fine fescue, zoysia or other thin bladed grass, then it's perfectly acceptable to cut low. On top of that, cutting thin bladed grass low, gives home owners a good view of any potential problem areas that they could address with a little bit of re-seeding.

I live in a smaller community. Most everyone "catches\bags" their grass. We gave a community grass and tree dump. So, what's normal to lawn care companies in bigger metro areas (mulching or blowing grass cliipings) is kinda foreign to us. Anyway, great vid!

Shouldn't you bag if the lawn has a lot of weeds? Wouldn't this prevent more weed seeds from spreading?
@UncleFester22405 жыл бұрын
One of my clients (ex-military guy) LOVES the lawn striping-he pays extra for it because it takes more time, others don't care/aren't interested. I'm a small-fish, only have/use a push mower and the striping kit adds another 20 pounds to the mower, so yea, if you want more work, you'll have to pay extra. If that's exactly what the customer wants, that's what I'll do. If the grass clippings aren't too excessive, in my area it's considered a "best practice" to blow the clippings back into the lawn, but in other cases where there are a lot of clippings, bagging them up and placing them at the curb in a clear plastic bag for the city to dispose of is a service I offer-that the customer pays for. This is why I explain to my customers that they come out better if they cut more frequently in the "grow" season so we don't have to bag up too many grass clippings. As far as the claim that you're "unprofessional," after watching several of your videos and and seeing your work, the results do all the talking you'd ever need.

I bought a new mower a year ago and have not used the bag at all. All I can say is I have the greenest, thickest lawn on the block, and so far five neighbors have asked what is it that I am doing to my lawn (in a good way). It is tall fescue, and I do cut it at 4” to encourage more growth, make it denser to keep the weeds out. At some point I’ll dial it back to 3 1/2” - probably next year.

Warm season grasses are completely different than cool season grasses so the people saying your doing it wrong have no clue what they are talking about- ( they probably live up north) mowing low is the proper way to maintain warm season turf and mulching the clippings put nutrients back into the soil. Bagging the clippings isn’t good and I don’t recommend bagging cool season lawns either. I manage turf grass for a living and live in the transition zone so I deal with both warm and cool season grasses, mainly Bermuda and zoysia we don’t have much centipede or St Aug… anyway Keep up the good work!

Aesthetics my man. It looks better. Also, grass clippings are useless when you have a fert program. The nitrogen is negligible from grass clippings. It leads to thatch issues as well. Also, when you mow in the northeast USA you cant just leave that much grass blown on the lawn. The height of the lawns after a week is 8” to 10” plus. Every week. Mulching weeds also leads to them spreading. If you have a weed control program you should collect the weeds until they are gone. Hope this helps.

The blowing of the clippings on to the property is good I love to stripe tho hitting it in different directions gives you a better cut due to the wheel marks going the same place every time which compacts the soil also makes the grass lay down hitting it at new angles issuers a clean cut and looks way cleaner.

People don't understand every state is different. I went to Florida last year & I asked the gardener why he put the stuff in the street or blew it on the lawn. The grass needs nutrients & that's how they do it here which is understandable. Here where I live they raise the lawnmower up, I bag mine but for my house. But I notice that the gardeners here blow in other people's yards. My neighbor had a gardener & he would blow leaves in my yard all the time. I would ask him to please not do that anymore & for a couple of weeks he wouldn't do then he started again. So of course I was upset & I made sure he never came back as I put it. I kicked his ass & he never returned! Plus the new gardeners are respectful and responsible & no problems but than again word probably passed on to new gardeners. Which is good & I learn new ways of doing my edging thanks to you sir. Good videos & I love my husqvarna as well :)

When it comes to striping you didn’t mention the most important factor until the very end. Types of grass Down south is a lot of caterpillar as you mentioned and it’s basically impossible to stripe when you cut it at the normal height. It’s really just a matter of geography, I’d imagine if you lived up north you’d have a lot more people asking if you do or can stripe their yard when you cut it. Rye Grass grows higher and will stripe when you cut it.

Im in houston but my property north of us in pasture land has what I believe to be bahaia… what kind of grass do you recommend for the “yard” area for a clean look in our climate?

Grass clippings must be blown back onto the lawn in our area. Bagging grass was a marketing ploy back in the day by mower manufacturers solely for the purpose of selling more mowers. If lawns are mowed properly (1/3 of the leaf regularly) there's no need to bag or mulch really. There is an old video somewhere of Art Evans (Dixie Chopper founder) talking about mulching and bagging where he explains how I believe Toro did a big introduction and marketing of bagging mowers. He goes on to talk about how mulching is just the new bagging. It's an old video dating back to when mulching mowers hit the market. It was quite eye opening for me to see the owner of a company that sold mulching and bagging equipment discuss how they must sell those products because the public was basically duped into believing they need them because of his competitors successful marketing campaigns. I wish I could find the video to share. It wasn't a promotional video obviously but more of him sharing his knowledge with others in an informal conversation.

Love the channel and i am a new subscriber. I been doing part-time landscaping with my family since 2006. We also blow the clippings onto the grass. The only time we do pick up the grass, is when we have large piles of wet grass that gets clog under the mower.

The point of mowing warm season grass in stripes is because you get a more thorough cut. The grass doesn’t lay down like cool season grass, so you don’t get visible lines. But the only other option is mowing in circles which usually leaves a lot of grass blades straggling behind as you turn.

Leaving cut grass on the lawn is the best fertilizer for your lawn .

Im in the north and I bag as a homeowner and 9out of 10 times weed eat after I mow. Should it be very long I might weed eat prior to mowing, but I cant see how what your doing is unprofessional. Quite the contrary and would say the person who made that comment without even considering or knowing what the norms were is unprofessional, ignorant and a troll. I think someone who is professional in general is articulate, not afraid to be wrong and ask others for help, listens and contemplates before reacting, not afraid of change and convey passion for their work. You undoubtedly demonstrate all of those attributes.

As long as the yard isn't overgrown, blowing the clippings or mulching is recommended. This is very good practice especially if the yard gets regular fertilizer feedings. The Blades of Grass (pun intended) hold nutrients from natural growth and from what the fertilizer provides. So, the grass is actually fed repeatedly between applications of fertilizer when the clippings are fed back to the soil to decompose. Also, if the grass isn't overgrown and a mulching blade is used, the clippings will begin to decompose in a matter of minutes!!! Leave mulched clippings on the sidewalk and watch how fast decomposition starts. What you're doing is not only common practice in your area but also good for the health of your customers lawns. Great work and video.

Obviously whomever said blowing the clippings back into the grass is unprofessional doesn’t know much about lawn care, or the industry. You do you big dog, you have a great channel. I hope to be half as successful with my channel and lawn care business as you as my man.

Very well said Johnny. As far as Florida goes. WE DO NOT STRIPE and seldom bag. Augustine is one of popular species and it is recommend to leave clipping because it is a primary source of Nitrogen and great for the turf. Common Bahia is another turf and is cut short and there is no need for bagging if maintain weekly. We are starting to see a lot of Zoysia also and I have had to start bagging during the rainy months because it is such a thick turf. So this one is still up for debate. As far as the Darwin grip goes my instructions that came with the FIRST prototype shows the bar in a 90 degree upward position and on top of the trimmer shaft. I was thinking your way was because you guys were shorter and it some how helped. Saying that means the way you have it now is still wrong. By the instructions that came with mine. If they changed things. Maybe some one can do a follow up video letting us know 🤔

You didn't have it on backwards sir. But as you so wisely did, adjusting it to your way, your fit, is all that matters. I have the new lighter grip on my trimmer and edger and I love it. I'm 6'4 and it makes a perfect fit. Also, here in Missouri we also blow clippings into the grass. It's the norm in most areas in the country. We also do not stripe. Our customers love the even, lush grass look. Keep up the good work. Love the channel.
