We do have that big of smallmouth in Texas. You need to go to Belton or Texoma. Or go just north of the Red River to Lake Murray or Broken Bow.

Your dad mentioned how they seemed to be hitting it right at the boat. I have a theory on that; I think fish will follow a bait a long ways and when it does something different is when it bites. When you are cranking a lot of times that happens when the bait starts to come up to the boat at the end of the retrieve. When you’re cranking, give short pauses, snaps, etc from time to time to vary the return and you’ll get more bites out away from the boat.
