@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 not to sure really wood working is normally my dads part of ship I normally work with steel. I know it can be a pain to put nails through. A normal timber we use for axe handles is spotted gum and the trees I have are ghost gums both very good hard wood. I'll have to check out your mates channel thanks for the heads up.

I had no idea there was such variety, if my uncle hadn't got me listening to John Williamson as a youngster, I'd probably not even know they exist! It's always been my understanding that the more difficult it is to split a timber, the better handle it'll make, like ash and hickory have a cross linked grain, but certainly ash is light and springy too so I might be chatting coblers.

@@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 spot on. I hope it makes the process of filming and editing a bit easier not having to play presenter whilst also playing fabricator.

@@jimbarbwe1985 filming and fabricating are easier, but editing is more complicated as my pikey free software doesn't let you voice over so I have to record it separately and overlay which in theory is fine but the audio always grows so in between recording for 10 minutes and transferring files it'll end up being 10min 30 sec and subsequently completely out of sync. Any suggestions or constructive criticism always well received and appreciated, I just got my first paycheck from the ads so feel like I should up my game a bit

Man, that ash was a beautiful piece! That handle came out fantastic! Excellent stuff. A have a few draw knives that Ive gotten off eBay and they come in handy and one day Id like to make a carving horse for pieces like that, because handles are always so awkward to clamp and the horse will come in so handy.

I'm still feeling guilty about only using a 3" chunk out of the center of the board.... I'd had a half arsed attempt at a horse a while ago but got my angles wrong, I'm jelouse about your eBay draw knives, stuff like that is starting to fetch good money over here now.

Very interesting Turbo. I've been watching Ben Scott (check him out. A proper axe man) and I am hankering to get a good felling axe. I might try something like this. Did you temper it ? Hard to fathom dislikes on your channel. I get a few too. Hard to fathom that too 😈 You shall get a like from me. Guaranteed! 👍
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 6 жыл бұрын
I didn't temper separately, I pulled it out of the quench while there was still a lot of heat in the back of the axe so it kinda tempered itself... It feels nice, the file marks the surface but won't cut. If you manage to get a feeling axe red hot with peat you'll be my hero... More so than you already are.

Why didn't you use a plane?
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006
@turboconqueringmegaeagle9006 6 жыл бұрын
A plane is only really good at getting things flat, Ideally I'd have a shave horse to grip it, then a draw knife to rough it out and a spokeshave (which is pretty similar to a plane) to finish up. Ben orford has a channel by the same name and does some beutiful work using traditional techniques if you wanted to see these tools in action. Thanks for watching my friend.
