Siskel & Ebert Review Southern Comfort (1981) Walter Hill

I couldn't find the S&E review of 48 Hrs, so I had to jump forward to Southern Comfort. This is a film I watched many times in the early 90's. I found Walter Hill's Southern Comfort to be surreal and scary, almost like a nightmare but I couldn't take my eyes of it. I'll never forget the creepy feeling when Powers Boothe and Keith Carradine are trapped in the Cajun village, seeing animals being killed and skinned (with that awesome Cajun music), thinking will they get out alive. I could have swore Southern Comfort played on BBC 2's Moviedrome but after some research I found out it didn't (it should have). Seeing Southern Comfort today in HD, the film has lost none of it's power but being more cine-literate it doesn't feel as surreal as when I was a kid. If you have not seen Southern Comfort, it's a scary and exciting film (a horror war film comes to mind) and a must see. A great cast and music too.

I always thought it played during the glorious Moviedrome seasons(in my mind`s eye it was a summer thing), but i may be wrong. But i agree that it`s a bit of an undiscovered gem.........Did Boothe and Carradine get out at the end, because it just finishes on the close-up of what i presume is the National Guard/army truck.

I'm from Louisiana and I love this film. Some cajuns I know weren't crazy about the way they were portrayed but some understood the Vietnam references that S & E bring up. That last sequence in the cajun village is one of the most brilliantly staged, shot, and edited sequences I've seen especially in a film like this. Great job using the HD footage and the commentary.

Yeah, I have been searching for Siskel and Ebert's review of 48hrs for so many years. It was only a few months into their first season of At The Movies and those episodes are rare. If they had stayed at Sneak Previews another year, then we would have had no problem finding their review. As for Southern Comfort, I have seen it three times in my 48 years on this planet. I love Walter Hill and I really wanted to love this film, but for one reason or another, I don't. It's a decent film, but with no great shakes. It's right up there with Johnny Handsome and The Long Riders.

A brilliant movie. Walter Hill's movies have a great edge. I think the hotel shootout in the original 48hrs movie got him into a bit of trouble with the Hollywood Executives. Streets of Fire another great watch but i think Southern Comfort is my favourite. Cheers for posting the video.

This film is a real good thriller. It has a very exciting Pace to the film. The swamp is so surreal like your in other world. The Cajuns are extremely frightening in this film. This movie is heavily compared to John Boorman's Deliverance by film critics. It has that intensity of suspense to it. Powers Boothe and Keith Carradine are very good together in there performances. The music by Ry Cooder is haunting at times. This is a very well made first rate thriller by Walter Hill.

It wasn't very difficult to fool Sgt. Casper!! He wasn't the sharpest tool in the box! By that time he knew that he was going to die....the only question was when and how was it going to happen. My Father was a Captain in the Army in the reserve . He said this would have never happened. They did maneuvers in Bayou . He said they would have asked the Cajuns for a lift and the Cajuns would have given it to them. He fondly remembers sucking on a Crawdad with some locals . He did say that another unit lost a man when they camped out. A coral snake had crawled into his sleeping bag at night and bit him. Yikes !

Speaking of snakes. There were stories of a WW2 POW camp where the MP's were mostly Cajun and conversed with the Germans in french as that a number of the prisoners spoke french along with german. According to one story, POWs who were captured paratroops (fallschrimjaeger) would snag Water Moccasins, decapitate, skin, and even cook the meat. The POWs would make the skins into wallets and belts.

@@elenacalabrese7459 Elena, how very sweet you are. I meant to reply to you a day ago, but after writing quite a lengthy note I forgot to hit the return key on my computer! Sorry for that! I don't remember all that I wrote, but I did mention how surprised I was to read comments from Italian women celebrating the fact that Casper was killed!! Poor Sgt. Casper! He was just the victim of his own idealism and lack of training. He was the only one of the squad who felt a sense of responsibility for the welfare of his fellow soldiers and was trying to go "by the book" to insure their safety. Obviously it didn't work out well for him, and he figured that if his death was inevitable he would choose the method of his dying. In the original script Casper killed two of the Cajuns in hand-to-hand combat, only to be killed by a third one. He sacrificed his life to save Simms' and died a hero's death. The script was changed to the form you saw, because my character was coming off as too strong! I'm glad he was your favorite as he was my favorite, too! When I first read the script I felt that Casper was the most interesting of the group and offered the greatest opportunity to study and develop a fully fleshed out character. I still think it was. Though the working conditions of shooting the film were brutal, it was still great fun. If that is your picture, you are a lovely lady, and I wish to say thank you for your flattering comments! its funny a lot of people like ebert saw the parallels with this film and vietnam, but the director's intent wasn't even about vietnam he just wanted a weird national guard drill weekend gone wrong type movie. (But I see it's a more universal theme about military conflict over a foreign country) "No, that was just our story. And we were very aware that people were going to see it as a metaphor for Vietnam. The day we had the cast read, before we went into the swamps, I told everybody, “People are going to say this is about Vietnam. They can say whatever they want, but I don’t want to hear another word about it.” Also this reminds me of the time this Ssg told me in South Korea they were firing in a shooting range and one of the round tracers caught some farmer's ginseng farm on fire. He probably wasnt happy about some soldiers doing that

The main military technical fault with this film is that one can't fire blanks in automatic weapons like the M60 machine gun and M16A1 rifle without either fitting a Blank Firing Adaptor to the end of the rifle barrels, or a blank barrel to the machine gun. Without doing so, one would fire one round, all the gas would go out of the end of the barrel, leaving none to go back into the weapon's recoil system to re-cock the bolt. This would have to be done manually. On military exercises, it is obvious a BFA or blank barrel is fitted: they are normally painted yellow, part of the safety system for training. However, one then couldn't mix blank and live ammo, which they do in the film. Semi- and Fully-automatic film weapons have blank barrels which allow them to look like 'live' weapons, whilst being able to fire blank rounds. That's the problem when one first watches this great lost classic film when one is a serving soldier. 🙄 This film is not just about Vietnam to me: it's pretty much about any case where the army of an-over civilised, mostly urbanised country go into a country of a tribal people, who routinely carry and use weapons, and know how to use the terrain. Unfortunately for us, the British, we had lost all our hard-earned experience of Empire Policing when we returned to our old stamping grounds in the Middle East during the 'War on Terror,' so we lost that one as well. 🙄

@@DrTWG The National Guardsmen could have started the patrol with BFAs fitted, then removed them and passed out the live ammunition once they realised they were facing a deadly enemy. The Cajun marksman who killed their Sergeant at the river crossing would have been too far away to have seen that the M60 had a blank barrel with its yellow end plug fitted. So that minor detail wouldn't have affected a great story and a great film that much. 🤔

It's good, but no. Something I really love about Deliverance is how Burt andvJon's characters switch roles later on in the movie. How Burt's character goes from cocky bravado to basically helpless and Jon's character is forced to become the guy that has to get them through this. Southern Comfort is good, but it doesnt have the character development that Deliverance does.

Hey y'all. I'm a true Cajun. I enjoyed this movie quite a bit, until they dug them up. Catholicism is very big in Cajun culture, and grave desecration was unheard of. This turned these characters into evil creatures in my eyes. The scene with the falling trees was ridiculous. Gene Siskel referred to Cajuns as being "another color" ?? We're French, not 'People Of Color'. Our ancestors were exiled from Nova Scotia, the Canadian Maritime Provinces, and Maine, the region then known as Acadia, as in Acadia Natl. Park in Maine. In one of the most tragic events in North American history not involving indigenous people or African slaves, even before the American Revolution, an entire colony of European descended people's homes and lands were seized and/or burned unless they renounced their religion and swore allegiance to England. Those who refused were loaded onto ships, whole families were separated and exiled into the unknown. Many never saw each other again. Many thousands died at sea. It's known as "Le Grande Derangement". It inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem, "Evangeline". Lovers Gabriel and Evangeline separated for decades, only to be reuinited with Gabriel on his deathbed. We had boucheries, but never music. The Balfa Brothers are legendary. We called that old traditional Cajun music, " chank-a-chank'. Zydeco is much different. For a good portrayal of a Cajun by an actor, see David Straithern in "Passion Fish". If I didn't know who he was, I would've thought he was a real Cajun.
