This was very interesting as I have never really seen how extruding worked. Dad started with Kaiser Aluminum at the Trentwood rolling plant in 1949 where they would get molten metal from the Meed Reduction Plant and cast it in molds that the bottom would slowly lower until full. He was in charge of the rolling mill. It was in about 1965 that he was put in charge of the "Can Line" making the metal for soda cans. Kaiser bought the machines to actually make and finish (logo ed) soda and beer cans "empty", He'd bring them home to me. To an idiot teen I didn't realize that one day they might be valuable to collector's items with prototype pull-tabs, Oh well.

So this is why slotted aluminum (t-track, v-slot) is still so ridiculously expensive after all the years it has been available? It just feels like I'm buying a VCR for the price of a modern blu-ray player. I wish more sizes and shapes could be made for consumers... I love the creativity with these. It's like Legos but for adults.

Pretty impressive. I never thought about a aluminum log being pushed through a form like that. That casting block must be some kind of thick or it would explode.
@daltonwynn3786
@daltonwynn3786 4 жыл бұрын
Just really hot. The casting block is called a die; it is preheated between 700 and 900 degrees, and is anywhere from 6-8in. thick. It is placed with a hot bolster behind it to stabilize the die and control the direction of the aluminum as it’s coming out of the die. (At least at my plant, I’m not sure the necessity for bolsters in every situation.) The plant I work at has a log furnace that cuts the hot billets only moments before they’re loaded into the extrusion press... Not every extrusion is cooled with water either, at my plant, we make precision parts for the automotive industry, and some of the parts are cooled with water and others through an air jet tunnel (one tunnel serves both purposes, water or air) and the force of the jets can be adjusted to manipulate the dimensions of the extrusions... It’s a fascinating process. If you’d like to know more, just shoot me a reply.

That was quite informative, and entertaining. Does ILSCO sell 2020 and 3030 profile T-Slot extrusions? Also do they sell to the general public? I have a small ebay shop that sells 3D Printer supplies, and would love to carry 2020/3030 T-slot extrusions, but it's been difficult finding a manufacturer that deals with the general public. Trying to start a business selling extrusions by buying them from a dealer who purchased them at wholesale from the manufacturer just doesnt make sense. Funds are VERY limited so I wanted to start off with a very small order.. Just enough extrusions for one 3d printer and see how fast it sells at a price that allows me a small profit. I really just want to keep the 3D printing community from buying their extrusions from China because it feels good to know I can help keep jobs here in the USA.

Well, it typically extrudes anywhere from 950 to 1050 degrees F, at least from my experience... much hotter and you’ll have molten metal. At these temperatures the aluminum is actually considered a solution and is soft enough to bend fairly easily, but not soft enough to melt in your hands.

Usually about 10,000-12,000 lbs before they're worn out, its a solid h-13 steel cylinder block that is then cnc'd down to the desired profile, the billets are welded from the mechanical friction as they're pushed through the press at ~90,000 lbs of force. If the plant is on top of of things, they'll QC/review all dies when not in use.

Prior to the 1980s TVs, computers and most consumer goods were invented, designed and manufactured in the United States. Our traitorous US politicians have engaged in a policy of asset stripping since the 1970s and the results are evident.
