Hard to believe that this is your first KZbin post! Amazing review and fully justifies the effort that you have obviously put in to produce this content. I purchased an Ultra C a few days back after going through a ton of reviews and even then some the concerns you raised are new to me. This is what I call an unbiased review. Good going and hope your channel grows with more content like this.

This was a phenomenal breakdown. I enjoyed that you provided pros and/or cons for many of the specs especially when they were lacking. It's refreshing to see reviewers that take time to understand the device through actual use and can explain each feature. While I love LTT reviews, your review is much deeper than what I get in some of yheir videos. Please make more of these videos.

I truly appreciate that! Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave such a wonderful comment. And woah - being mentioned in the same comment as LTT is mind-blowing lol. I definitely plan to continue forward! I have a lot of reviews in the works from bluetooth audio receivers, headphones, Govee RGB lights, microphones, portable charges, to desk accessories, peripherals, and much more. Immediately, I am releasing 2x shorter videos of the Tab Ultra C (1x to highlight its productivity features that I love, 1x to highlight all the things that hinder my productivity) to try to ride this wave of success. I appreciate you sticking around while I figure KZbin out.

Are you saying here that Linus Tech Tips has given a review on these ereader Note takers? If so, I will go look for them, but maybe you are referring to another reviewer and I would like to be able to find whoever that is that you are mentioning.
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
@@janinawalker4200 - I believe the user was speaking in general terms, not suggesting that LTT specifically had a TUC review (though they did just post one on the Dasung e-ink monitor about a week ago!). However, an LTT offshoot channel called "ShortCircuit" does have some e-ink tablet reviews. In addition to that, I highly recommend checking out "MyDeepGuide" and "KitBetts-Masters". Both provide excellent e-ink insights and have a lot more experience with e-ink devices than myself.

Thank you for this honest and concise review, that is really one of the best here (though I'm a big fan of Voja's My Deep Guide channel). Exactly those issues that you have mentioned, battery life, the grey screen and poor security together with the high price have stopped me from getting the Tab C Ultra. I've had a Note Air 1 for studying for the past three years and I'm really still very happy with it, using it as a note-taking and pdf reading device solely.Yes, colour would be great but I work around it with different 'textures' of highlighting annotating and emphasizing. Last week I was able to see a few Chinese versions of Boox devices next to each other, even the Palma, and a Tab C without the camera, but I didn't see a major advantage to my Note Air to justify an upgrade. I would love an e-ink phone or at least a handheld but as long as there are these security issues with these niche products, I can only dream about it;-)

I truly appreciate that - being mentioned with one of the top e-ink review channels feels amazing. I watched a handful of his reviews on various devices before making my purchase decision and very much enjoyed them. I don't envision ALINE tech being 100% e-ink, though there's an obviously interested audience, but I will keep exploring the space, testing everything new that I can get my hands on, and helping folks find the best fit for their day-to-day lives; I am still hunting for that "perfect" e-ink device for myself. It never hurts to wait for the next-gen to upgrade, especially on early adopter (first edition) products such as this. I believe you have made a wise decision as that upgrade path doesn't seem 'worth' it enough unless you absolutely NEED color. I agree on the security flaws and do hope that Onyx takes the time to better refine their software and UI/UX experience before pushing a new wave of devices. I, too, would enjoy an e-ink phone; I was recently browsing around at all the different options that currently exist. Slim pickings!! Thank you for taking the time to watch + comment!

Thank you so much for this in-depth analysis. I was days away from pulling the trigger on a Tab Ultra C as an e-ink replacement for my iPad for calendar, note taking, annotating pdfs, and reading. However, your notes about the instability and pen input lag in third party applications was a deal breaker for me. I had really hoped we had something there, but this sounds like it’s just not ready yet. Massive security issues are also very concerning.
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to watch! Yea, I don't feel it can effectively "replace" an iPad for a majority of uses (though it's awesome for those cases you mentioned - note taking, annotating PDFs, and reading!!). The Tab Ultra C rather provides a supplemental way to continue working with your apps while you let your eyes rest from backlit screens.. AKA as substitute when your eyes are getting tired or you need to preserve your eye stamina for future work. There isn't a magic way that I've found to handwrite on a calendar and have it sync/share to other apps - the only viable way is to use OneNote with a calendar template OR a PDF calendar template that you annotate on and sync between your devices. Both of these options are clunky. It is, IMO, an "early adopter" product in that it feels not yet refined. Great concept, good build execution, and I think Onyx will end up making great strides if they focus more time into their software experience and testing. However, there's currently lots of UI/UX and software issues that need to be resolved to get it to a place where it can be seamlessly integrated without frustration. Compared to something like an iPad or Samsung Tab, the integration here feels "young" and "inexperienced".

Thank you for this super detailed review! I was interested on a device for reading (including comics/graphic novels) and sketching, so color E-ink sounded good. I'm now convinced that this tablet (and maybe E-ink in general) is not for me (or not yet, at least), even if it sounds like a nice way to read outside in the sun.
@aline.tech.reviews9 ай бұрын
I would suggest that this is more of a workhorse solution and probably overkill for your use cases/scenario. If your main use case is reading/writing, I would check out the 7.8 versions like the Tab Mini C, or the Bigme Goyue v6. They have all the same features and functionalities outside the keyboard case at like half the price. The smaller versions are not only cheaper, but also easier to hold for reading. The larger 10.3 are not fun for holding and reading for long periods.

@thebaldconvict Жыл бұрын
Finished watching the rest of the video and oddly I think a lot of the things this suffers with, my old Note Air doesn't, even things like the marker fading the text doesn't happen on mine. Mine is a mono only device so maybe this is related to the colour screen rather than the software? I use it all the time for notes and think I would find the Ultra C very frustrating.
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
@@thebaldconvict - Yea, as far as I'm aware those pen issues don't exist even on the B&W Tab Ultra (mind you, I don't have one of those.. so I'm only going off of what I've seen from others). All of the forum posts I've seen have been in regard to the color version. The screen issues I pointed out also don't exist there - as the darkness/subpixel graininess are caused by the color layer. It definitely gets frustrating. They kind of fade into the background once you get into a flow state/get used to using it for multiple hour sessions, but then you come back and just notice them all - I've even gotten angry at the thing which is not a good sign, haha.

Just imagine if they ever get e-ink to reasonable refresh rates, so that it can open the world of office work and gaming to e-ink devices. From hiding in the shadows of our nerdcaves, to being able to work and play videogames outdoors. Complete world-changer. Think of the fortune handheld consoles would make in that world.

I truly appreciate that!! That is quite literally my main objective with this channel, so it's reassuring to know it's received well. It's my first channel! I did spend 2-3 years learning about filming/audio/etc. (aka, procrastinating) and trying to convince myself to take the leap. =) And agreed there - it definitely doesn't feel quite "there", but I'm running into that problem with a lot of tech these days. I've since tested a handful of other e-ink devices, and can confidently say the Tab Ultra C seems to be one of the top contenders at the moment (if not the top) even with all its flaws. It doesn't feel like there's an offering above it, so to me it is the current ceiling. And LOL. Your vision of the potential future sounds lovely (except the going outside part!!). I'm wondering if e-ink will die out completely in lieu of another reflective technology. I can't imagine us refining what e-ink is to the degree it needs to be. It feels like there is a hard limit of what can be achieved based on the current pacing of the tech. I hope I'm wrong about that!

Excellent overall review highlighting both the strong points and compromises. I pre-ordered the device and so was one of the first to get it. For me it has been great. Not flawless, but the best, most flexible and powerful overall eInk device available. I don't use the frontlight much and instead rely mostly on external lighting, just as I would with pencil and paper. For anyone with eye sensitivity issues, I completely recommend it. For others, it's likely best to stick with LCD. Another option is the SunVision Display RLCD: a 32-inch reflective LCD monitor with the full color and the fast refresh rate of a standard LCD, though with some spec compromises. It has no frontlight, so external lighting is a must which can be challenging but possible. It has become my main monitor. It has a hefty price tag, but it is entirely worth it if you have eye sensitivity issues with standard LCDs.

Truly appreciate that! And love to hear that you are getting along with the TUC. I am also using mine nearly daily.. it has even become my primary script-writing device for these KZbin videos. I used it to write this script of this video and really fell in love with the process and the amount of eye relief it provided. I've had my eye on both the e-ink and reflective LCD monitor displays. You mentioned the lighting can be challenging for your RLCD; how much light is required for a good experience? Are you able to use it in a room with natural light during the day and your regular home lighting and night, or did you have to go out of your way to set up lightning specifically to use it? Agreed the price tag is insane on both.. I'm currently holding out through the e-ink tablets and by pacing myself with breaks to give my eyes a rest.. waiting for v2.0 of those technologies. Based on the current reviews I've seen, I'd really need to try one out for a month before dropping that much $ on one to not enjoy it.

What would your recommend for mainly reading Tab Ultra C vx Tab X?
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
Thank you for taking the time to watch and leave the kind words!!! What type of reading are you doing? If it is mostly books, then I would vote the Tab Ultra C (or even Mini C if you dont want a large device). If it's mostly PDFs, journals, research papers, etc. then you might want the larger screen to avoid having to zoom and pan around a lot. Color would be your secondary decisive factor there.

Appreciate that! It's definitely good at that - it may take you a minute to get used to working from Android if you aren't familiar with using a tablet, but stick with it. There are tradeoffs for that eye relief, but it makes for a great companion in that regard. I still use my Pro daily. And apologies that I didn't get my Tab Ultra C Pro video out on time - ran into a bit of snag with my dad's health that set me back many months. It's all filmed, I just need to edit it together, so aiming for early August!

Amazing review! You shed a light on this device from many perspectives and you did it thoroughly. Congratulations on such a great first video! Concerning the device: It looks promising. First impression of build quality is fine, though the rest leaves something to be desired. Especially looking at the premium price tag. Some of the hardware related things like the connectors or the issues with the screen might become unnerving to some in the long run while others can live with it. Some software related issues could be resolved through updates. However, I doubt it will all happen, speaking from experience with other companies. The adaptions to make better use of the color e-ink are nice and for me, the screen + pen input are the biggest selling points. But in the end, it all looks a bit unpolished and needs further development to make it really shine. Like you put it: It has its advantages and if you are in the market for such a device, it really depends on your use case. However for me, I will stay away from it. Too many compromises to be made. Still, I hope that devices like this pave the ground so other manufacturers also join in and develop new productivity focused devices. Once again, thanks for the review and saving me from buying a device I would not have been satisfied with 😅

I did my best to point out everything I could find so viewers could make an informed decision based on their personalities, so I'm happy to see the video was of value to you in that way. =) Onyx has released a beta firmware that fixes some of the issues (like the pen stroke bug, and reportedly the security patches). I haven't tried them out yet but am debating giving it a shot to update the community. I too, hope that these companies are inspired, by comments like yours, to push e-ink and other technologies forward. It seems obvious there is a new wave of interest surging for e-ink and productivity tech.. so fingers crossed!

It's really sad because I've been wanting to buy an e-ink device since many years and have been noticing the same problems you describe. The devices don't seem to get out of beta stage. Outdated components are being installed. The software is not fully developed. Yes, there is some improvement, but overall the price-performance ratio is not really good enough. When will there finally be such a device from Samsung or Apple? The market should certainly be there, even outside of the academic working world. Great review, I rarely watch full 50 minutes of a video, but this was really useful. Would be curious to see a review of the Boox Air3c from you!

@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
I really appreciate that, thank you! The Mini C could be a game changer for many! It's effectively the same device just shrunk down to be more compact/comfortable for holding; I presume the performance will be similar outside smaller changes like a different pen/larger bezels/etc. I am hoping for a larger screen version, like the Tab Ultra C X - as I don't have a large use case for a smaller, more portable version than the 10.3". I am debating on whether it's worth the purchase just to review it to keep this audience informed, and maybe give it away!

You're very welcome! And thank you for watching. Agreed, unless you are itching for it, I would consider any purchase in the color e-ink space an "early adopter" purchase as of this point. That said, it's obvious a wave of e-ink popularity is rising, and I would expect that we will get lots of improvements over the next few years. I've also read that companies other than EINK are trying to build similar technologies.. and see that EINK is working on foldable displays. There are currently alternatives, like the Bigme Galy (which uses the EINK Gallery 3 display and can display many more colors than TUC's Kaleido 3 screen because it uses actual ink pigments - AND at 300ppi). It's not cheaper, though. What I've gathered there is the screen is great but the UI/UX of that device is bad enough to keep people from recommending - worth researching for yourself though and watching some reviews!

I have an eye disease and E ink has been a godsend. I got the Tab X. I am very happy with it in general, But I am very frustrated with the lack of keyboard cover and bad Usb port, No camera as well as lack of appS optimized for the tech. for someone who suffers with MGD stage 3, I simply cannot use normal LCD screens so this is the best I can get at the moment for academic purposes. I hope one day there will be an E ink fully functional Laptop.
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
Glad the Tab X is working for you! And definitely understand the limitations you have listed there - outside of color, lack of the keyboard cover was a big factor for me in the Tab Ultra C (even though the larger screen was super appetizing). Are you up-to-date on the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Twist? I'm not sure if the price will be justified for you if you don't need/can't use the OLED screen, but here is a preview: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqC1eYSeh5mIhqs . It was projected to be launching sometime in 2023. Regardless of whether or not you get this, it proves that companies are investing and e-ink laptops are right around the corner. Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 2's are still around if you buy used, I think!

🙋♂I have seen many reviews regarding the Boox Ultra Tab C and have to say this is one of the best reviews I have come across thus far, concise and to the point. I am looking to buy the Boox Air 3C and after watching this, I have second thoughts since they are both similar and I assume they will both have the same security issues. Keep up the great work and will be looking forward to any updates you may provide. Kudos from NYC🗽.

I truly appreciate that, and thank you for taking the time to watch. =) Boox devices effectively all run the same underlying OS/software, so yea most things are transient from one device to the next (while UI layouts/options/functions can be slightly different between them). The 3C is updated to Android 12, at least, which means we are available for security patches for ~1 year. I have the new TUC Pro now and most of these issues still exist - there are many ways to protect yourself by using a separate Google account, using a Guest Wifi network, or locking down the device with software. I cannot recommend putting sensitive data on these devices from your job or personal life.

I got an older color boox tablet a few years ago. I thought I was going to read a bunch of comics, manga, and manwa, but mostly I just read books. I have read comics and manga, both of which worked very well, but I failed to consider that manwa were meant for scrolling and not for pages, which means that you'll get a lot of ghosting or lots of refreshing. It would be nice to have an option to jump up and down half a screen to a whole screen without scrolling the space in between to avoid ghosting, but I haven't found a way to do so. I like the idea of color e-ink, but I have found that the trade off of the darker screen isn't really worth it for me. Maybe if I was a massive comic fan it would be perfect, but I read far more manga and normal books, both of which are somewhat diminished due to the color layer.
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
Hey there! I am not familiar with manwa, but I do believe I understand your issue. What app are you using to read/scroll the manwa? NeoReader? I agree with you on the dark screen - it's a tough area to justify for those of us who are sensitive to it. I do hope it's an area that future generations of color e-ink can improve on. I haven't yet seen Gallery 3 in real life to know how it compares.
@sabinepamtrap5074 Жыл бұрын
I would apreciate a video where you introduce the viewer to the device specific productivity apps (and your oppinion about their usefulness). Especially the productivity apps, that make use of the stylus and/or keyboard.
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
Great suggestion, noted! As a FYI, there aren't many apps that work well with the stylus. The default Boox Notes & Reader apps (that come with the device) are the bread and butter for the stylus. They have done some software "optimizations" (workarounds) to make the stylus usable in Microsoft OneNote and Evernote apps (and I feel they are actually usable here without issue). However, that's the extent - any other app suffers a major latency and isn't worth using with the pen stylus. The keyboard can be used in any app - the latency/delay is a little greater in third-party apps, but it's an area where your brain adapts quickly and it's useable in most apps you use. Any app you would imagine typing in should work well with the keyboard!

Just returned the tab ultra c. Biggest issue was the battery life, then weight and then the dark screen due to the color layer. Also the fact you have to buy the latest model of Boox to get the latest Android version is a dead end for me. Kaleido still has a long way to go as far as color is concerned.
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear the TUC didn't work out for you. Agreed that "Kaleido 3" isn't the best at color, but do applaud Onyx for advertising them properly by using the terms "pastel". I'm still not stoked we can't select and write with all the available colors though, and are limited to like 8 colors that repeat reds/blues/greens. I was recently digging into and reading about the "Gallery 3" screen - in the off chance you haven't heard of that. It uses colored CYMW ink particles with varying charges to allow a full color gamut at each pixel and supports way more colors + a 300ppi resolution. I'm hopeful to see a Boox implementation of it with a recent Android version.

The built in Notes app actually doesn't have a highlighter. It's just a marker, so it really covers the written text instead of highlighting it. It would be great if Boox did add an actual highlighter in addition to the marker though. Esp. since almost every review I've seen thinks that the marker will work as a highlighter even if it's labelled "Marker." That issue with the first stroke not appearing is strange and bothersome. I wonder if it is isolated to the Ultra C because it doesn't occur in my Nova Air C or Tab Mini C.
@aline.tech.reviews Жыл бұрын
Yea, same page! I believe I noted in the review that I wish they had a `highlighter` brush that stayed in the format the first draw of the `marker` brush (where it's only half colored). It is a bit of a common sense misunderstanding.. as you would presume to have a highlighter on a device such as this and the `marker` is the closest thing to that. It's similar to the calligraphy brush.. it's not the typical calligraphy pen you would expect (it doesn't have that interesting drawing/width dynamic that a 'typical' western calligraphy brush has). It just doesn't meet user expectations due to a "common sense" misunderstanding. Agreed on the stroke issue! I've researched to find that it is quite widespread for the TUC, but I did not confirm its existence on other Boox devices. However, Onyx does have a beta firmware out that apparently addresses it. I'm waiting for them to release that to production so I can test it and provide an update (they don't have any brick guarantees or way to reverse firmware updates that I can find, so I'm not going to risk installing the beta).
