Eye to Eye

We set up encounters between complete strangers, from different faiths and backgrounds in Israeli society. They had one task: to look each other in the eye, silently, for five straight minutes.

I interpreted it as though he is of Arab/Palestinian descent and she's Jewish. The boy looks at the girl and it immediately triggers a deeply seeded emotion of fear. He sees her as an extension of the oppressor. The natural response to the "oppressor" in that type of situation is sheer terror and panic. He is crawling out of his skin. One can see how taxing it is on the human psyche to be living in an apartheid state. Her response to him says it all. It's disturbing to watch how this conflict is emotionally, mentally, psychologically, and physically running people into the ground.

Sure, the english title is "When the Night Falls" performed by Ruth Dolores Weiss", written by David Peretz and Elad Shufan. But you'll probably find it more easily by copying the hebrew title: כשהלילה יורד

+Sameer Khan: I lead meditations in Chicago. One type is the Wide-Eyed Open-Heart Meditation, much like this. A group takes turns doubling up and looking at each other person in the eyes. No words. Just being present, authentic, vulnerable. It's most often quite beautiful! I've teared up many times, laughed many times. The eyes are a doorway to the soul. Try it!
