Another good package to add is luci-app-https-dns-proxy (DNS over HTTPS) which will encrypt your DNS look-ups, just install and it will set it's self up and work out of the box

Id like to echo several other comments by saying this is the best tutorial out of them all. Not only do you provides good configuration info such as enabling Force Local DNS, but you also include the tcpdump mini during the installation, which I totally forgot about on a clean install and was wondering why I could not get DNS Report to work . lol

@@Eyerex can you do a video about the best fully open wrt capable routers you can buy now? None of the routers I've found at Amazon, new egg, etc have the right versions of routers in Open wrts hardware list or they use a newer chipset that has proprietary code

@@SmedleyButler1 Hello i use a Netgear R7800 which has worked fine for the last few years running vanilla OpenWRT but i like using Kong builds plus you have the option of trying DD-WRT if you want as it's supported but i would have a read over at OpenWRT forums to get a better idea on the state of play on other makes and models of Routers

@@SmedleyButler1 RT-AC51U - a little old, about 3-5 yo, but imo it's fucking awesome. The only disadvatage is 100mbps switch, not gitabit one but i don't care so much because i have 100mbps fiber and i don't have smarttv, nas, stuff like that, so i don't need faster . : I installed openwrt on that fucker and my wifi connection raised from 50mps up to 70-80mbps, so this is awesome idea to change firmware...

Great video, thanks. One comment: you also installed libustream-mbedtls but this is a library used by SSL. It is not related to adblock. Is it really necessary?

Don't think you need these days but when i made the video you needed it to download blocklists

This works well on my computer as well as my phone. The only problem that I'm having is that it doesn't work on my phone if I have my VPN running. I haven't tried installing a network wide VPN yet and seeing if it works then.

Hello and thank you for your video. I was unable to find any information on 2 things, if you could please help me figuring them out. 1 is if AdBlock can do custom lists like pihole can. 2 if adblock can (or openwrt) do local dns entries. Thank you in advance

Hello not sure if you can add custom lists but i've never found the need to add any new ones as all the main lists are already included ps not sure what you mean "do local dns entries"

I get two errors when trying to follow your steps. First when trying to install luci-app-adblock i get "Resolve conffiles: Existing conffile /etc/config/adblock is different from the conffile in the new package. The new conffile will be placed at /etc/config/adblock-opkg," Then if i select Adblock i get "Type Error fs.exec_direct is not a function" I guess this is due tot he first error. Any idea how to fix it?

Hi, I'm currently using pihole and would like to move this functionality to my x86 based openwrt machine however I'm not sure if a specific feature is supported or not. Can you let me know if I can bypass this adblock for specific client IP or MAC address? Like I want a device to have no filtering.

Was just having a look at settings and theirs a option to Allow Local Client IPs "Allow all requests of certain DNS clients based on their IP address (RPZ-CLIENT-IP). Please note: This feature is currently only supported by bind DNS backend."

He's using a WRT 1900ACS with only 500M of RAM. At the end of the video, you can see that after setting up, 70% of his memory is still free. Note that before setting up adblock, he's at 87% free memory, so it does take a chunk of memory to run adblock. It's possible that it will take more memory over time, but that would take some testing.

@@PiotrK2022 Works great for me and my router with the same amount of memory, and I have a lot of devices on my network. You might want to try again. There's another lighter ad-blocker in the OpenWRT repo that you might want to check out. It could also be CPU rather than RAM related.

​@@stevencooley3341 I checked in htop - that was RAM. Maybe solution for OpenWRT is lighter then adguard - that's why it works better on smaller amount of memory.
