EYstreem, I have a possible scary myth theory you should test, please, my theory is that the sculk is actually the corruption from your "scary survival season" cause of the function of the sculk, I might sound crazy but the sculk is has a function that is to take over the world and kill mainly anything, the portal in the Ancient City could have been the portal that has been connected to the portal that was in Hades' old lair, was connected to these ancient cities are just dormant outposts of the corruption that if it activates, it has the basic resources to create more machines, to replicate itself
