Very good, and useful lesson. No quad tracking. But I use two but similar amps for the left right paning (Marshall JCM 800 for a left track and Mesa Mark 4 fot the right. It makes it even more juicy. And third, solo track in the middle using Soldano SLO, all amps are free NAM captures. That is how I do it.

accenting theme notes is what I started to do subconsciously by throwing octaver over clean patch. Makes a big difference in full mix! And I am totally with you on double tracking. It just sounds fat enough, but also more organic

I've been working on song writing with my guitar teacher (who is a recording and touring musician). My material leans more toward death/thrash metal but I'll have to try some of the clean layers in places and see how it sounds in some parts. It definitely adds to the experience in your track. His advice was similar to you in that you play and record the left and right guitar with hard pan, or like a 70% pan left and right. I have a single note riff where the left and right guitar harmonize each other. This is probably specific to single note harmonized parts, but I'm recording the left guitar and right guitar each twice. The "left part" I record into a left and right track, and similarly the "right part" is recorded into a left and right track. I'm recording dry so I can use plugins or re-amp later, but generally the song is using far less gain than I might in practice play, plus I am high passing the guitars at 100-120Hz. So in my case, the quad track is not for widening as much as it is to let the harmonies be more prominent. I also agree drums and bass can really change the feel and impact of a part. If you're not writing songs or drum parts, all you need to do is watch some of the "hears for the first time" videos on drumeo to hear how much a drum part can change a song

These are really useful tips for writing/arranging. Could you use a guitar with clear fret markers so I don't need to take my mind off what you're teaching to guess which fret you're moving to. Pretty please Henning! A wall of sound tends to restrict you to walking inside the wall. I first heard that in the eighties and it really needs saying again.

First of all: What Henning says! Let me add to this. Perception of heavy depends on the context. Deep Purple recorded (please consider the time WHEN they released certain songs) some of the heaviest guitars. And that was a Strat in a Marshall, often sometimes not even double. Of course, this cannot compete with KORN compared today. Quad tracking / Baritone / Drop to wherever - sure, make the mix super dense. And good luck keeping the punch of the drums. Because, everything is competing, frequencywise. And keep it mono compatible. Of course, done right, and with taste, you can record something perceived as ultra heavy. In my book, this needs ALL INSTRUMENTS to contribute.

Biffy Clyro! They mostly use Stratocasters when recording, thought sometimes they bring in s Les Paul, or something. But listening to 55th episode of the podcast Tape Notes, when Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil and producer Rich Costey talked about how they recorded and produced the album A Celebration Of Endings, they touched upon guitar recording, naturally. One of the best sounding and heaviest sounding guitar tones was a Strat through a Metal Zone, into a Marshall amp and one SM57 microphone. It sounds awesome!

Another helpful video for us amateur home engineer musicians. So there are bands that say they've got a better, heavier, more cutting tone by stripping all guitars to just a raw panned left and right track on their recordings... sometimes with some variations in the exact chords played, like you show in this video. Then you've got bands that try to follow the Metallica Black Album many layers wall of sound philosophy. Considering a "metal" context, that is music where guitars are the main instrument, how do you evaluate these conflicting options of getting heavy sounds? I agree with the warnings about muddiness, that's also my experience, but of course your mix is already pretty busy with multiple vocal tracks and high guitars (keyboard?) fills. Why do some engineers and bands and records get away with heavy layering and some don't?

What would your advice be for a hard rock 2 guitar band. If there is 2 rhythm parts and a lead. Do both guitar players double track their rhythm parts or do they just record what they are doing and pan one hard left one hard right and then does the lead go down the middle or is that double tracked as well. Do both players use the same cab for consistency and then their amp preferance. If i listen to Appitite for destruction i sounds like its one left rhtythm one right rhythm not double tracked with a lead down the middle and overdubs to suit. whereas blizzard of Ozz sounds like one double tracked rhythm panned left right and a double tracked lead just off left right. Am i thinking to much into what is right and wrong or is whatever is right for the genre? This is a great series of videos, would love to see more of this kind of video.

It really depends on the parts. If both players play the same part I would only have one player track twice it so it is as close as possible.

Going back to The Beatles some songs John would play a riff on the Casino that was pretty raw and then George’s part (or one of them) would be adding the accents clean like you suggested here.

The chances of me listening to any music in mono is zero. It never happens. Mostly Stereo playback and occasionally 5.1/7.1 in my living room. Because I sometimes have my music playing in the living room that’s when I discovered LCR. If mono plays out the center and hard pans play out the rears then I want all three going for max wall of sound. To get LCR I am still doing dual pass but recording 2 speakers per pass. The total of 4 different speakers is set up for LCR as you would expect. To create a center I am adding two phase aligned channels and reducing each volume under clipping. All of your recommendations still come in to play, I like clean stuff hiding in there too. And sometimes I will add a low gain part as well. I think it takes a variety of gain structures (low/high) and a wide frequency spectrum. But not too many passes at it. You want to punch through with parts. Mono is always a great choice too, some of my best results are quite simple. Mono with stereo effects. Enjoy your video very much HP! Thank you!

I feel the same about quads...you lose so much definition. If you cant make it sound big with two tracks, youve got the wrong amp! My dual rec NEVER has a problem sounding monstrous on just double tracking. I know a lot of people hate "dry" amps like that, but lemme tell you...theyre THE best for recording rhythm tracks.

Yeah. Otherwise you loose your guitars in mono. Especially, when you do both sides with the same guitar/amp combination.

@@georgyj111111 iv also had success with putting the "fake stereo" track where you use the same track panned left and right but flip the phase of one side at a lower volume then adding two more tracks ontop panned left and right it really fills in the middle of the entire stereo space

I used to do one guitar left and one right. Keeping it basic. My problem was that in songs that only have that one guitar part, like a riff, it just felt it lacked something. For some reason, one time I added a guitar centered, and even though it was very subtle, removing the C guitar felt like the part lost something. I tend to use two different guitars, one with humbuckers and one with single coils. The C guitar might be either of the two, or a third guitar. All played through different amps and speakers. I tend to pan the more similar sounding amp and speaker combination hard left and hard right, and the one that's more different is centered. But it depends, maybe I want a bigger difference between L and R, so... In production or mixing context, sometimes I'm not sure what to do when I have a second guitar part. Do I put it centred? One or two tracks? Do I pan it hard left or right, or maybe 40 or 50 L or R? Do I double track that guitar too, but pan one hard left or hard right, and keep one centered? Or something else? What do you suggest?
@EytschPi425 ай бұрын

Man saying that quad tracking isn't useful is just wrong. There are plenty of high level engineers who use quad tracking in their sessions and it doesn't sound muddy. Just because it's not the way you like to do it doesn't mean it should never be done or that it isn't a good idea.
