On the point of Mr Beast not using 4K - that's got to be both a time consideration and how the end user is consuming the content. Time is money - 4K files are much larger, so they take longer to transfer, longer to render, longer to work with in editing software. If the mission is speed, 4K slows you down. And most of that audience is watching on a phone screen which can't display 4K anyway. It's like how old music used to be mixed in mono because it was being played back on mono radios. There's no point in making it anything more than HD when that's still the limit of most viewing devices. It's the same reason I rarely shoot in 4K, there isn't enough benefit to justify the file sizes and additional time.
@EytschPi424 күн бұрын
with modern sytems the 4K and data size is not a bottleneck anymore... I would save 2-3 minutes MAX if I only worked in HD... not worth it. Having the final video in HD isn't really the issue... shooting in HD and then doing massive zoom ins degrades it even further and that really isn't necessary. given the teams and time and money THEY have, time and computer power should not be an issue. My computer renders a 45 minute video with 9 angles and loads of effects in less then 5 minutes... so time is NOT a factor anymore.
@ScienceofLoud4 күн бұрын
@EytschPi42 you're making a lot of assumptions about where Mr Beasts money is being invested - if the files are being uploaded and downloaded from the cloud for some off site editor who doesn't have the most high end editing suite, then it's absolutely a time issue. Also, let's not forget: the audience is children, not grown men in the tech industry who scrutinise this stuff. The loss in quality in zooms is a stylistic part of that style of content - its deep fried meme shit, same as the deliberately blown out clipped audio that often accompanies it. Young people love terrible quality content - you're just old.
@dogdays71204 күн бұрын
@@ScienceofLoud The concept of 'shit quality is simply a meme' is BS.
@ScienceofLoud4 күн бұрын
@@dogdays7120 Yeah, it's an excuse people give to justify it - the real reason is not one single person (apart from Henning) watching a Mr Beast video gives a single fuck whether a punch zoom retains visual fidelity or not. Video quality is for vastly less importance than the story, the emotion, and the frenetic editing style. It's obviously a calculated decision to save money, storage capacity and time which can be justified by the expectation of the audience of meme quality content. The word I used when talking with Henning about this earlier on the phone is 'verisimilitude': This idea that you are seeing what was really happening in a live, unplanned way - despite the obvious massive planning and coordination required to create those kind of videos. It's all finely controlled, but aesthetically presented as if it were just playing out without preparation - the after the fact, low quality punch ins add to that verisimilitude. It's part of the stylistic success of that content, no matter how bullshit an excuse it is.

I want to evolve to a mirrorless at some point but I did get a DJI pocket 3 creator just now for events and use as a second camera to switch to. Constantly evolving camera gear over time but I never would have learned things I needed if I didn’t make it with what I had on a budget to start with or things I already had around me repurposed. Moving lighting around recently trying to make the small space look better, but the huge high ceiling reverb being the biggest challenge to fix in post always. People find their way to improve their videos the more they create videos. This rant was a Good way to show the differences and how folks can improve their content through various cameras.

how do you know if a creator is content or discontent?
@fraenkiboii4 күн бұрын
Pretty strong opinion coming in. I'm not a "content creator" (I absolutely despise that word - in today's day and age effing everyone seems to be a content creator) I'm just a viewer/consumer. So imo, if the content is interesting and relevant to people in general or a particular audience, all these technical details are completely irrelevant! 1.) If I don't connect with a creator on an emotional level or their content is not relevant to me, their videos could be shot in the highest imaginable quality with the most expensive gear on this planet, I WILL NOT WATCH 2.) If I connect with a creator on an emotional level and their content is relevant to me, their videos can be shot with a potato cam in 480p, I WILL WATCH every day In a nutshell: If you need all the technical gear to polish your content, your content is not relevant enough. If I compare all the guitar related channels, they are all the same!!! Everything looks the same, everyone has a passive light and some decoration in the background! It's almost like a blueprint or template for youtube creators it's becoming boring! All the channels converged to THE SAME. Every creator can afford the same gear, everyone is doing the exact same thing. It seems to me as if all the competition is not about the content any more, it's about the gear and who has the best microphone and thus the best sound. And it's a competition most viewers just don't care about. It's almost like professional cyclists. They are all on such a high trained level that they start to do stupid things like doping.
@EytschPi424 күн бұрын
The technical details are not irrelevant.. if you can’t hear what someone is saying and you have to concentrate really hard to hear them over the room reverb you won’t watch. That is my point. Obviously the topic is the lost important thing, but you also have to have a certain level of quality to deliver that topic. You wouldn’t watch a poorly lit, out of focus video with distorted audio. Most channels have great quality now because they take their job seriously. That’s all I ask for.
@shorerocks3 күн бұрын
I shoot all my music videos (and some reviews / commentary stuff I did years ago) using phones. Add a separate microphone plus getting DaVinci Resolve Studio for video editing, color correction etc. Plus proper lighting. And then it looks at least semi-pro. If you do a decent job.
@jimshomestudio4 күн бұрын
I apologize because I don’t feature any video quality for my music. The camera is the cheapest HD I could find, it was $200. It has a couple file formats available, but you need the faster memory cards, I got two. Because I feel better playing with the lights off, my videos have the worst possible lighting. No lights. The money went into audio, but still very thrifty SM57 mics. The preamps are an assortment, they were expensive, the amplifiers are old, some decent amps though. And I don’t have any subs, just a handful. I tried to remove ads, but YT has other plans. Doing music just for fun, just to learn, because I have always played guitar. Approaching 40 years as a hobbyist. My actual job is in construction. Damn that Sony looks amazing, and the audio is exceptional. I WISH!! But the chances are slim to none that I could afford that. Wife needs a decent truck, hers is 30 years old. Must’ve been quite the effort to produce this video, enjoyed the demonstration of various qualities. Hope this reaches a wider audience, seems useful for anybody making videos for YT.

Great video on this topic Henning. As a viewer, I agree that if content is bad or I just don't resonate with it or with the creator, I won't bother watching, even if they have the best quality in the world. However, seeing creators that, maybe even not having the best/most expensive gear at their disposal, they will try their best to make their content look/sound to their fullest potential with the tools they have, that shows that they care about the message they're trying to deliver, and also that they respect their own work. And honestly as someone who occasionally puts out "some" content out there, and looking up to you and your work ethics, I appreciate hearing your take on this, so thank you Henning, because this was also informative.

I know I'm not Henning but my suggestion would be get a copy of reaper and use the included reastream plugin with OBS. That's what I used to do when I did guitar streams. Plenty of tutorials on KZbin on how to do it too. Also all that software is free (yes you should buy a license for reaper for $60 but they won't cripple the software if you don't)

Two reasons for lower quality content: 1) Can't afford better, 2) Can't be bothered. That's all.
@pelennorDSP4 күн бұрын
Ah, the meta on KZbin has changed somewhat .. more "authentic" and less highly produced videos are now in fashion, so both big and small creators alike are doing things like filming on their phones, not doing the highly produced thumbnails, etc. A lot of the "how to grow on KZbin" channels are blowing up because of this, and that's why it's spreading. The KZbin growth channels also tend to not know a lot about audio, so the message they end up sending is your phone mic is good enough until you can afford one of those DJI wireless setups. The KZbin growth channels could really do with subscribing to more audio and photography / videography channels because as you say, you can improve things a lot on both the audio and video front without spending a lot.

Some random eastern European thoughts: Android phone for 300 euro - can't afford more. Old Zoom H2n recorder for 100 euro used - still sounds decent. Old Canon 650D for 150 euro used - lens not wide enough; can't afford other lens. I understand your frustration, but people are either ignorant or just don't care and I'm guilty of the same lol XD Especially when uploading a meme or some random idea to show my friends - I can't be bothered. But your video does inspire me to try and do better. Thank you :) BTW the low quality compression zoom is a meme - it's deliberate, because young people find it funny. XD

what grinds my gears is when you hear the guitar through the mic in guitar demos of plugins/modellers with a direct sound , is it that hard to mute the mic during those parts? 😄 i've busted my brain trying to figure out some of the things that you're talking about, trying to improve certain parts (be it lighting, video quality etc.. ) depending on your room the audio can sometimes be the most problematic, i also wanted the mic out of shot, went from a shotgun mic (sennheiser mke600) to a small diaphragm condensor mic (SE SE8) as i was getting all sorts of fun reflections from my oversized desk and semi un treated walls, the results with the SE8 was better but still need a decent amount of post processing to get to where i think it's decent how much does my potential audience care about the 4k video/lighting /audio quality etc.. who knows, but it drives my OCD crazy 😄

I couldn’t agree more Henning. The issue is even more critical for anyone with compromised hearing. I suffer from acute tinnitus (which I actually don’t mind at all - the ‘80’s, metal, I kinda expected it) and substantial midrange loss due to a VERY loud airbag deployment. Intelligibility is critical to me, and quality processed audio is essential, particularly if music or human voice is the subject. I’ve had to unsubscribe from channels whose content I loved because I frequently could not understand what was being said, and I consider that a music channel with sub-par audio is just a crap channel. Loving your work Henning!

Thanks for the video as always. Personally, I can live with ‘bad’ video quality for the most part, but bad audio is a no-go... It always depends on the topic of the content. I only post a picture on Insta 1-2 times a week but even for that I sit down and edit the picture. If I've been out in the forest for 1-4 hours just to create this ‘content’, I should also take the time to do a bit of editing.

If an iPhone is good enough for the British Broadcasting Corporation, then it's good enough for KZbin. Whilst running a charity and facilitating others, we've been fortunate to have segments filmed for the news. The BBC have always sent their reporter armed with an iPhone to record the segments, which didn't look shite on tv. It's really not difficult to make even a smartphone camera an acceptable video recording medium. Compared to the vintage hardware I learned my trade on in the 90s, completing a media and communications course, they're on par, if not superior in many respects. What's more important than the camera is ensuring the subject is sufficiently lit. Cameras are only as good as the light hitting their sensors, don't misinform your audience. But I wouldn't expect someone who's never mentioned the media/journalism course they did or didn't complete to know better.
@EytschPi424 күн бұрын

Having started to take this stuff a little more seriously & doing it on a cheapskates budget of "as little as possible" I can say yeah the learning curve can seem steep, but it isn't; there's just a lot of little things. And that you don't have to spend a shit ton ...but you do have to spend actual money. Don't worry about the camera, just get a better camera app for your phone. Buy good mics, and process them in post. If you cheap out on lights they'll work okay but they'll be annoying as hell. Edit on computer not on your phone, if you intend to ever shoot horizontal. I'm to the point now where I can see my mistakes & can improve on them. So much so I'd say that now the worst stuff in my videos is the presenter (which creates choppy edits because I got make this guy, et moi, look like he can articulate words & riffs).
