Ezra rly did make the most ingenious Lightsaber design then proceeded to never fully utilize it's potential. For example, he literally could solo Inquisitors ez clap by shooting them in the face during a saberlock. Unless something in the design doesnt allow the blaster and saber to function simultaneously.

In order for the blaster to function the light Saber needed to be off.

You have to set the blaster part of the lightsaber hilt to stun if you want to spare someone's life.
