When I bought my new 2021 Nissan NV 200 van new I asked the dealership how much they charge for a transmission service and I believe they said $250 and they only do a drain and fill. I plan to service the transmission myself when it hits 30k miles.

I wonder how many CVT owners who had failures never knew about that round paper filter. My thinking is that it is the one most likely to get clogged with all the fine debris that the screen filter could not catch. I know what some people are thinking and might say the screen catches it all. Then why do vehicles that have them have problems eventually? Look at Volkswagens with the 09G, they have the same mesh screen. It will not fit your Nissan so don't even think about it!! They do have the same mesh in them and I strongly believe that it does NOT do an adequate job of filtering the fluid!! That is where you need a good paper filter or better.

@Mickey Mouse. Would that winding noise these Patriots are known to start doing be caused because that small filter starts getting clogged enough that the trans is fighting for more fluid flow? I just didn't think it would be caused by the filter that goes in from the bottom inside the trans pan.We don't drive ours that much because it's just a backup vehicle so that any family member can use it whenever their everyday vehicle is down because of a repair needed. (I'm usually the one doing the repairs).

@@montydaniels1054 Alot of people dont know about there being a 2nd filter on the transmission if it is not replaced with regular service you will end up with a whining transmission. It will act and sound like a whining power steering pump when there not enough fluid. Its about a 50/50 shot after it starts whining that the transmission will stop whining after both filters are replaced. I'd take the chance in replacing both the filters, before i got drastic and took it to a transmission shop and spent $3000 just on the trans. filter # TF 246 or jf011e Good Luck.

@@mickeymouse3976 Thanks for the reply. I assumed that whine was because the system was getting starved of fluid trying to circulate but wanted to make sure. I typed in that issue in youtube & one mechanic had how to fix a CVT Trans when it starts whining. Out of the entire video all he talked about was he just replaces the transmission. Never did talk about what else to do. I laughed when he said there are no error codes for the transmission so I left a comment telling him that shop needs to spend the $4k or $5k for the right scanner instead of using a $49 one from amazon lol. Okay, UI already had that top filter & the bottom screen/filter so I'll get to it this week. Our Patriot is only a backup vehicle for the family to use when their daily drivers are down for me to repair them. It's just the 1st CVT Trans I've had so parts of maintenance is new to me but I'll learn I'm sure. Thanks again for the reply, It surly helps out.. Take care too. MD.......

Then learn to do it yourself. Watch every video on your model and generation. After several videos you will notice some guys skip steps that others don’t. Save the 2 or 3 better videos or take a screenshot to find them later. If there’s only one good video use that one. You will eventually learn how to weed out the guys that cut corners. Your biggest hurdle is if you don’t have tools. If you don’t work on cars daily, tools from Walmart and Harbor Freight will handle most jobs. Go to auto parts stores for single tools and they rent tools for free. Been doing my own cars like that for decades.

Wow. Is that how all dealership service departments are? Telling techs to "shut up and put that part in". If a tech is not knowledgeable to work with the scraps they are given then that's why your car ends up breaking down again sooner or later and then the dealership blames it on the customers bad luck. Thanks, I learned quite a bit. Dealerships remind me of my workplace where doing the right thing is doing the wrong thing.

It really depends. Sometimes it will come down to the service advisor or even the service manager to make that call. I’ve had situations where shit just didn’t make sense and was told to simply do the job. I’ve also had situations where I would cuss the service advisor out and tell him I wasn’t about to go through with a shady request and if he had any issues he could give the RO to another tech. Believe it or not, many Techs are proud of what they do and value the quality of their work. Many customers are never around to witness just how much back and forth BS goes on between service advisors, techs and management. “If a tech is not knowledgeable to work with the scraps they are given then that’s why your car ends up breaking down again” This is simply not true. If you were aware of the mandatory training we have to go through so that we are “knowledgeable” you wouldn’t be saying that. In respects to training, Techs are no different than Doctors in that our training NEVER ENDS. Sounds like you’ve had a bad experience before and trying to vent.

Dude you just refuse to remove the damn axle shafts, stop trying to cut corners to save time. You make the rest of us mechanics and technicians look like jackasses by doing things half-assed! For the sake of getting the job done right just order the damn filter and put a new one in, besides when replacing the cooler it’s required to change the filter anyway and the same goes for the cooler too. If you have to remove it the cooler, your supposed to change both the cooler and filter at that time.

So let me get this straight, you really think I wanted to fight with this transmission taking it out so I just left the axles in?..smdh..If you listened to me speak on how they was seized inside the hub youde likely understand, or, I take it you have not experienced such.. My man, that was the last hurdle, how could you suggest I refused to remove the dam axles shaft when you can see the attempt. And by the way, how is it done half assed if its done? The goal is to get er done. That Jeep is done and gone. Had I fought with those axles just to find out they now will need replaced because I took Mr Norwood suggestion and just banged away, we would still be here. Online Mechanic Tips ok thanks for the link to part two with the explanation of your struggles during the repair I gotcha. Although, you said that you possibly stripped the axle shaft threads, perhaps my friend if you would have sprayed the axle nuts with penetrating lube, start the disassembly of everything else, then when ready to remove the axles torch the hub and hub nut then using a 1/2” drive impact to remove the axle nut won’t strip the threads. Again you torch the hub around the axle shaft after the nut is removed, screw the nut back on the threads about halfway and then use the 5 or 8 pound sledge hammer a couple good hits on the nut. That’ll pop the axle shaft out easily. Never hit the axle shaft without the nut at least halfway screwed on with a heavy hammer or air hammer. The past 20 years I’ve been dealing with axle shafts like these I’ve never seen or heard of stripping the threads or a completely seized axle shaft. But as you say improvise right, remove the brake caliper, disconnect the wheel speed sensor, lower ball joint, lower strut mount bolts and remove the entire steer knuckle. Leaving the knuckle hanging then using a dummy stick (large or huge pry bar) isn’t the persay correct way to as you say Get-R-Done. I’m not saying your a dumbass mechanic, I said your method makes all of us like you (mechanics/technicians) look like jackasses. Anyway, keeping the piece your way worked and my way hasn’t failed me in 20 years along with no damage to parts being reused. If your customer was crying about $500 for axle shafts, they weren’t properly warned by your service manager of potential issues during the repairs you were tasked with completing and that’s your service managers fault not yours. I’m simply saying while your method worked, it’s flawed and should be as you say improvised more efficiently to lower the potential of damage to reusable parts and to ease the process during a repair.

THIS IS YOUR TRANSMISSION ok, that’s your thought but, I’ve had many axle shafts that were seized solid come apart using the methods I learned as a rookie 20 years ago that to this day have not failed me. Maybe I’m lucky or have more experience doing the work, i don’t know but what I do know is that hammering on at shaft without the nut will mushroom the end of the shaft or roll the threads. Using a torch to heat the hub then using a wheel bearing puller to apply pressure to the shaft or a few hits with a sledge on the loosened axle nut have always worked to a point that I’ve never spent more than 15 - 30 mins at the most to remove a seized axle shaft. Sorry if I’ve had better luck than others mechanics but, in 20 years I’ve never had an axle shaft that I couldn’t remove in 30 min or less.
