I was there from 1968 thru 1970 and deployed on Det 31 Bon Homme Richard and Det 31 Oriskany with VFP-63. I saw my Chief and a few of the guys in my Squadron in the film. I got my Private Pilots license at the nearby Montgomery Field airport. I was an AMS-2 when Discharged, it was a great experience. Ted Swope, florida.

My Dad lived in nearby University City around this time. I remember sitting in his back yard watching Crusaders and Phantoms flying over. Man they were loud and so cool.

I grew up and still live in Poway, just a short distance from Miramar. We came here in 1959 and loved watching the old F-4's and F-8's passing over our house on their downwind runs. We used to love driving down that road just east of the end of 24R until they closed it to traffic shortly after the F-14 slammed down on it on approach. So many great memories of those days. I used to live with a Navy guy and would go with him to the EM club on base. What a great place to get layed! Fun!

Never having been to Miramar, had worked as electrician on tankers with VAH-4 (flying KA-3Bs) out of Whidbey Is, Washington state. The pilots, sailors shown here (with their long sideburns, stash, and all) seem strange to me, not having seen this 'new look' when aboard the Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31), in 1967, and the Ticonderoga (CVA-14), in 1968. Not sure where our photo recon planes were normally stationed back then, but a diary I kept notes VFP-63 had been flying RF-8G photo recons (Nos. 991, 2, and 3) off the Bonnie during our '67 WestPac Cruise, and lost 992 in May '67; also that 991 was damaged by flak in July of that year. Another F-8 Recon (not sure which squadron) had also been lost flying off the Tico, in '68, piloted by LCDR Wallace (missing in action), but that's from memory only, so don't quote me. There were, to be sure, many A-4s and F-8s (both gun fighters and recons) lost or damaged back then, and many a good pilot, too. What a waste.

My dad was an F3-H Demon pilot, early 60's. He once buzzed a flight of 4 F8's flying up the California coast. Flew right over the top of them in full burner. Are there any F8 pilots who remember such an incident? Dad always wondered what those F8 pilots thought of his 'flying' skills !!!

Probably felt sorry for him having to be flying an underpowered dog that was the Demon. The Demon was a victim of the ill fated Westinghouse J-40 turbojet. With the failure of the J-40, McDonnel aircraft had to install whatever engine would fit the Demon airframe. The Crusader was a much hotter ship.

@@donb9738 I do not remember him. I worked mostly night check (shift), but did interact or work with day check some. I am a member of a couple of VF121 (Fitron 121) pages & will ask if any of the members knew your dad. I shared an apartment with a guy who worked days & will email him to see what he might remember. I hope we can turn up some info.
