My late father served on the Randolph from 59-63 V-2 division. He was with the catapult and arresting gear crew I think. The stories he told me, so many nights I sat up and he would tell story after story. Although he only spent 4 years of his life in the Navy, it may a HUGE impact on him. He told me of the Cuban Missile Crisis and how JFK spoke to them and what a scary time it was. Never forget him speaking of being on flight deck and a huge uproar in the water and a Russian sub surfaced right next to them, now remember this carrier was part of a "sub hunter" group!! He said the Russian sailors came on top of the sub and they waved to each other and smiled....knowing that at any minute they could be ordered to take each other out! What a crazy thing the "Cold War" was and what a lasting effect on the world. My father used to say "the world had no idea just how close we came to all-out nuclear war" and he said he everyone on the ship was on pins and needles literally scared to death but willing to die in a minute if need be! I miss my father and all the stories. Thank you to all the people that served aboard the Randolph. You will always have a special place in my heart.

I Served On The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69), As An ABH3. Although We Were An Angled Deck, Landings Were Always Dangerous! Especially At Night! So I Can Imagine How It Must've Been On A Straight Deck Carrier! ⚓

This is CV15 the Randolph an Essex class from WWII . I love the F9F series they were tough bird from the Grumman Ironworks. This was in the day when you still relied on an LSO and you took off no landed with the canopy open. The jet age was still darn young then and really cool by my books. When landing the last chance of a go-around was if the LSO waved you off. Once you chopped the throttle you were committed to catching a wire or a webbed barricade.

i always thought early 50s jets looked like what real jets should look like, ex panthers F-100's, etc.

Those early jets seemed so massive and solidly built. Like they were made out of melted-down armor plate from surrendered Japanese battleships.

My late brother went straight to the Randolph from Boot Camp (Feb 51) AB. Believe she had just received the angled flight deck. Made Med cruises and the Hurricane cruise of (54?), Later served on the Champ and Ti.

In June 1955 Randolph entered a shipyard to receive an angled deck.

100 kt jet airspeed, minus 20 kt. Headwind, minus 25 kt carrier speed equals a 55 kt deck landing speed.
