Timely video :) I'm curranty testing Voightlander M mount lenses on my X-Pro 3. I shoot 100% recreationally. I find that I enjoy manual lenses in some ways more than autofocus. I took a walk at lunch today testing my zone focusing skills. I didn't care if the images were optically perfect, there was just satisfaction in getting the shots. I have vintage lenses as well...the Helios 44-2...not perfect but in the right time and place it can give you photos better than the sharpest lenses! Loving your channel!

Just picked one of these up lightly used for $225... couldn't resist! f/1.1 is pretty crazy, stopped down to f/1.4-2, it's pretty sweet for portraiture (assuming a patient adult subject and not a squirrelly child or puppy). Admittedly, it's not quite a Noctilux at f/1.1 -- but it's summilux-sized and weighted... and not $13,000.

I am on a budget, and this is a hobby. So I use a bunch of old Minolta manual glass that used to belong to my mother. I adapt it to my Sony and love it. I am definitely looking for fun quirky glass, and am hoping soon to add some old Soviet Helios and Jupiter lenses, and do so for their quirks. This 7artisans fast 50 is now also on that list. I learned on manual in the first place, I trust it more at the end of the day.

I use this lens on a Fotodiox autofocus M-mount to E-mount adapter and it works well. Artistic wide open but reasonably sharp stopped down to f2.8. Worth it :D

Love the lens. Purchased about a year ago. You’re correct it’s not optically perfect. That said I love it. It’s a rock and roll lens like a Jimmy Page solo it’s not perfect but it does something to you. Bad analogy lol. The mirror less camera revolution has brought me back to using manual lenses about 75% of the time. Yes I miss shots yes sometimes it’s a pain in the ass to get focus right in low light but I enjoy the experience so much better. The lens is wild until about f2. After and at F2.8 it’s actually pretty sharp. It’s a great lens

Hi! Hey Tim I here and a photographer. Much of my work is legal and documenting warehouses. I went 20 without owning a flash. Am in the process of upgrading to SL2. Tossed all Canon stuff. I actually tossed it all. No I am not about checking all the boxes but about feel. I started in 1m sq foot warehouses, very Dark and no flash or tripod. I developed my own skills and feel is very important. Thanks for the excellent video and hi to Raymond.

I have the 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 lens. I use it on my Sony A7ii with the Fotodiox Bronto adapter. With this adapter it gives me autofocus. I enjoy using this lens, even though f/1.1 is not that sharp. It's an art lens to me.

Hi, I have the Leica SL and this lens. But with the novoflex adapter. And it doesn't allow the lens to focus on infinity. Does the adapter you have here allow for both close and infinity focus? And if so what adapter do you have? Thanks :)

I just bought my first "cheap chinese lens" out of boredom and curiosity, I usually adapt vintage glass but sometimes I'm simply a little annoyed with all the adapters and added weight (using a heavy lens turbo), so I wanted a native one, a 35mm equivalent to be precise. Settled on the Meike 25mm 1.8 for Fuji not expecting much, but it really ticks all the boxes for me, I was genuinely surprised by the quality, character and haptics. Sure, edge to edge sharpness, distortion and whatnot... I don't care, for portraits and street it's awesome and surely sharper than my vintage 35mm lenses, at least when stopped down a little. So for now I removed some native Fuji glass I can't afford from my Amazon wishlist and put some 7Artisans, Meike etc. on it. Next is a 50. :)

Great video, I’d be interested to see if you’d test it on a tech art pro adapter that could give you autofocus on these m Mount lenses when using a Sony camera. I’ve had experience with ti before just not with this type of lens. I’m itching to try get that combo although it’s $300+ adapter

I really hope that you will give me a reply. I would like to know if I could use Fujifilm XF lenses (including third party lenses such as 7Artisans and Viltrox X mounted) on Canon EOS cameras ( such as EOS 60D). If positive, where and what kind of adapters should I buy. I own both Canon and Fujifilm XT4, I don't want to just put my Canon cameras in the cabinet. Please help, thanks.

I've fallen in love with the Voigtlander look. I've been using manual lenses almost only for some time now, on an X-T3, and I really love it. I do want some quality in my lenses, and at least one with great resolution, but there's so much more to it than that. I think it's much more crucial to focus on composition, mood, and subject, than the sharpness or "perfectness" of the lens. On a side note, I have a Kamlan 28mm f1.4. Cheap Chinese lens. Wide open it's soft, though useful for casual shooting. Stop it down to f2 and it gets much better. From f4 it's sharp from edge to edge. Use that lens for street or documentary photography with zone focusing, and you'll have great photos. Only 150 USD or so.

@@curtisp471 I wrote a reply to your other comment before noticing this one ;) and as a follow-up, I'd be curious how you'd compare the other F1.2's that Voigtlander has like the 40mm (which is also on Sony E-mount), and the 35mm. Having Voightlander put out those lenses in E-mount makes it tempting for me to consider the Sony system instead of the Nikon system (unless Voightlander starts putting out Z mount versions).
@curtisp471
@curtisp471 3 жыл бұрын
@@theMadMan74 I suggest first you hold both Sony and Nikon cameras in your hands first, and also process some RAW images before making the decision between the two camera systems. (hint: try Capture One instead of Lightroom also, better skin tones). I picked Nikon because I liked how the camera felt in my hand, and the thinner sensor stack thickness plays better with M lenses because M lenses are all that I care(d) about. As for the other Voigtlander lenses, the 40mm f/1.2 is very similar in performance to the 50mm 1.2, but the 50mm has a smoother bokeh as well as a few other small things. The best website I can recommend for you to look through with M-mount lens reviews is Phillip Reeve blog: phillipreeve.net/blog/ The reviews there are very trustworthy and professional. They primarily use Sony bodies, but also tests using Leica M10, so you can see when the filter stack thickness affects the results.

@@curtisp471 Thanks for the reply. I have held both in my hands and the ergo on the Nikon is much nicer. Didn't realize there would be differences in RAW processing so it's something I will definitely look into. I have been a reader of Phillip Reeves blog and find the info there very useful. I guess I just like getting more information and don't mind waiting as newer models come out ;)

I bought two used Leica cameras 6 years ago (an M8 and an M type 240), but I only have one Leica lens to share between the two. I would never be able to justify spending another 4 or 5 grand on another lens, let alone 12 on a Noctilux, especially since I'm just an amateur. I usually like my (modern) lenses nice and sharp and technically sound, but I'm glad I picked up this quirky little lens. I wouldn't use this as an only lens though.

2 (maybe 3) questions: Can this be adapted to Canon M series? I have M50 just to play with my old manual focus lenses. Is there much difference between this lens at f1.1 and my Canon FD 50mm f1.2? Is this lens APS-C specific or will it work on Full frame? Which lensbaby is your favorite? I love adapting old weird lenses, I'm looking at a Helios 44-2 to modify (reverse front element for super swirling bokeh). Might even get EOS R or RP for more fun.🤯 Oh and Imperfect character over technical perfection every time, unless I need a photo copier!

I own several 7Artisans lenses that I use on my E-M1. I love them, especially my 60mm macro lens!!! Yeah, they may not give you a technically perfect looking photo, but that's not what photography is about. This obsession, these days, with resolution, MP's, etc, etc, etc, is doing more of a disservice to photography than using one of these or similar lenses. I, like you and Raymond, also have a truckload of adapters!!! :D For all sorts of lenses and mounts. And, I'm also brand agnostic. If I like a camera and what it can do, I get it. Doesn't matter if it's Nikon, Canon, Fuji or whatever. But, I am budget conscious, since I'm not flush with cash, and I don't buy stuff because it's the latest and greatest. I like Leica, but I believe it's overpriced for what you get from it. Even their vintage film cameras. Great cameras, wonderful optics, but I would never pay the price you have to for one of them. All you're really buying with one of them is a brand name and the privilege of using the "red dot".

im going out heavy and weighed down , im still buying huuuuge nikon f mount uber telephotos without external moving parts ( internal focusing elements ) , theyre really big and heavy , thats an understatement , but i need the reach image quality and fast apertures ..the sony zoom 600 is 6.3 , its no good for my 200 iso max shooting .as light as they are the mental weight of shooting over 200 iso is too much ,

It seems to me as if recently, there are a lot of these cheaper, imperfect manual lenses coming to the market as of late. They seem to be some kind of hype! While I can appreciate the artistic results achieved by others so far, in building up my own lens collection, I do however still aim for optical quality (but for reasonably prices). Optical compromises are inevitable but fortunately lens corrections can remove a lot of that.

Love your channel but I want to share my experience on my 7 artisan 50 1.1 with you. Worst lens purchase ever to say the least. Paint start chipping off after a few use, 'sandy/grainy' feel at the focus ring at certain distance. 1.1 is soft and flat, you can call it 'character' but it's unusable for me. The worst part is when I talk to their support about the focus ring issue, their suggestion is for me to get a new one and give me a little discount on it! It's so poorly made they don't even bother to fix it and just give me a discount on my next purchase on the same lens. Garbage lens and service. On a different note, I notice you are using the 50 1.1 lens on the SL2, I tried it on the SL2S and it damage the metal frame around the sensor when try to focus to 'infinity' since the back of the lens protrudes so far out , it's only cosmetic but its really annoying.
