25-year F-16 avionics troop (and instructor) here. Coefficients are also known as Canopy Coefficients. The problem is in manufacturing, no two canopies have the same optical qualities. So during the manufacturing process, the finished canopies are tested with lasers, etc to see what distortion exists in front of the HUD. This data is converted into corrective numbers that are affixed to a sticker on the canopy (Far front, left edge) and entered into the Fire Control Computer (FCC). These are then passed on to the HUD Electronics Unit (EU)--a computer in the avionics bays. Anyway, sometime in the 80s, pilots figured out that you could play with those numbers in the computer and change the placement of HUD symbology. Welp, sometimes it worked, and sometimes it made it worse. Admittedly, oftentimes the guy at the factory was drunk or something and the numbers were way off. Our tech data really only allows us to reload the factory numbers, although unless we did a HUD EU change (or a canopy change, obvs) we left it alone, figuring it was the pilot that had to live with the results. Interesting that the jet in your thumbnail is from Torrejon. I was there from 85-89 when we transitioned from A to C models.

There should be friendly aircraft activated ECM nearby greatly reducing the efficiency of enemy GCI. If it's true that his countermeasures dispenser faulty, then those SAM could be the obsolete SA-2 or SA-3 that have poor maneuverability. IR guided SAM don't have the range and climb ceiling at that time so those were medium range semi-active radar guided missiles. Those countries anti-aircraft unit personnel that have tested their SAM against US aircraft ECM admitted that US ECM is so powerful that renders their GCI & batteries radars almost useless which includes British & French made SAM. Usually they'll just switch to IR & visual guided missiles hoping their targets are flying low and close enough.

From the video, Stroke 3 was left behind all alone as you can hear one of his buddy telling him, "You're on your own" while the strike package pushed forward and I highly doubt that the aircraft with the ECM will stick with Stroke 3 leaving the strike package naked jeopardizing the mission.

I know he makes and even on the 100th viewing, I still get a little sweaty and my butt puckers. Imagine having a massive SAM come so close to your face can hear it's rocket motors as it screams past. When you add in that Tullia's countermeasures malfunctioned and he did all of that with no chaff/flares, just adds to the legend. Let's also not forget that he thought his close friend was dead (you can hear the worry on his voice when he calls out for Stroke 4 and doesn't get a response), since they never saw Tice's chute open, adding to his stress levels.

Another tactics SA-6 sites (Kub) can use is: turn your radar on briefly, just enough to get the direction, altitude and speed of the target, then turn it off. Calculate (or guess) where the point of impact will be (you know his flight parameters and the velocity of the missile, so you can calculate roughly) or take an estimated guess and launch at least two missiles into that point without guidance, but keep your targeting radar pointed there manually without turning it on... Then, seconds before estimated time of impact, turn the radar back on. The missiles (which are in the air but the plane knows nothing about it since the radar is off) should pick up the signal and home in on it if everything is all right from the SAM's point of view... If the plane is still there, they will go for him and he will have just seconds to react. If not (you estimated wrong or he changed his flight parameters), you will see that and turn the radar off again to avoid SEAD. In the later case, you will not hit him, but will live to fight another day... That tactics was used to shoot down an F-16 in Bosnia and later in NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. Forced a lot of planes to give up on their mission while keeping SAM sites alive and kicking...

Nice to see it from a pilot perspective. I’m from Sarajevo ( under siege for 4 years) and we had street tranches, and also mountain ones . I remember sometimes in August 1996 plane missiles woke us up , first ones up on the mountains and hills around the city, and then Serbian position , artillery and tranches not a mile away in the city , a mile from my building. We actually got to see the whole thing go down from my high rise building, whole 45 degrees angle and the sound of bombs was crazy loud, but we were used to it by then , but the planes flying so low is another thing. It was happy day for us. We were finally free, and I feel like the whole city watched it from our high rise buildings, even though we were warn to move into basements just 20-30 minutes before. Thank you guy🥰. Wish all of you the best of luck. I owe my life to you and other 300K residents

Often we in the west perceive the war as simple good vs evil. In reality, all factions committed atrocities against one another. Bosnians, Croats, etc... violated the rules of war on numerous occasions, but NATO intervened for geo-political gain, and began bombing both military and civilian targets of Serbia and its allies. Almost half a million projectiles hit Sarajevo my hometown in 4 years. Approximately 3500 daily. That went on until nato said enough and bombed their positions around the city. Cities that they managed to defeat, became mass graves. Like Srebrenica, when UNHCR escorted busses with women and children, they hat to leave man from 14 on to stay. They’re still being excavated from mass graves. Thousands of horror stories. My friends father was beheaded in front of my friend and her mother. On and on . War crimes close to Hitler’s intensity. Then they moved down to Kosovo and Montenegro , that’s when nato bombed their factory and bridges in Belgrade and major cities alike . Their casualties in maybe dozens , or less. Our casualties were in hundreds of thousands. 14 thousand children alone was killed in Sarajevo. I was there . I was young adult. And now they’re standing with Putin and his propaganda. I was there , and I know who attacked who . Serbia was main aggressor, not Croatia or Bosnia. And 20+ Serbian casualties, can not measure up to half a million. Something they should have done before waiting for hundreds of thousands to die or be misplaced forever. I’m NOT ok with any kind of violence. Serbs and Croats died defending Croatia and Bosnia, they didn’t fall for Milosevic crap, and I lost 7 family members ( Croatians ) . They killed everyone that can aim their weapons at. Thousands of people from Croatia and Serbia died but not in mass graves, let’s be honest here. His people for refusing to take up arms , or those living outside of Serbia. This post was originally about night plane raid , and I was describing my experience. I really hate to say Great One or Awesome, for what the Maj. had to go through to get this video. But as for description itself. That was awesome. To actually see what someone has to go through when placed in a very stressful situation like that. The story itself would be great, but to actually see it. And then to hear the Flairs and Chaff malfunctioned and he did that all just by flying. Thanks for the video my friend. Keep 'em coming.

What gets me is how alone you really are up there, you have a flight with you yeah but its really just you and a massively overly complicated machine that needs to work flawless , you have to fight and die alone , if you eject your alone, at least in the infantry, you have your brothers and sisters shoulder to shoulder you have your support with in visual range, and your not doing flips in the sky at 300 plus miles an hour while explosive telephone poles are hurled towards your face … its insane

I like this comment because you are focusing on the human experience of combat fighter aviation. You have the strongest bond imaginable with your flight mates but part of that is knowing that you may be soaking up the telephone poles for your brothers and sisters up there and that's more than okay with us.

Oh my god! His flares and chaff never deployed? Man... good thing he didn’t know it til landing, that might’ve messed with him psychologically and put him in a state of fear or heavy anxiety, throwing off his maneuvering, I mean, who knows, y’know? That’s incredible. Very glad he made it home, and was awarded on top of it.

@Be Jet Clean I can tell by the concise analysis that you do every time you break in to explain something, that you A) _DEF_ know wtf you're talking about B) Understand that the incredible video footage tells that story in a completely captivating way, so you refuse to dilute its impact. C)You must be one helluva fighter pilot. I can tell by the way you explain things. At times when Stroke 3 was maneuvering for his life, you'd smile & then put your head down with a sort of bopping motion that was reminiscent of how musicians lock in to their groove (I'm a musician so I'm telling ya, when I see that kind of motion, even in such a subtle way as you did, that's a pilot that feels the rhythm of combat). Is that what you were doing, feeling the rhythm of Stroke 3's inspired Jinkification? Because, you know, I could be totally wrong & you just hadda go to the head compartment and drop those pee tanks🤣😱😵‍💫👁️👀👁️🤣. As for Stroke 3.....wherever you are, you, sir, are a god damned _WIZARD_ stick & rudder God! Best pilot shit EVER! †★Edit★† I may have to create a song immortalizing Stroke 3. That dude's performance under the most stress you can possibly ever have (your life is on the line nonstop for like 20 minutes straight), was _Galactic Level Epic!_

“Nail” is the call sign of the airborne Forward Air Controller. The still pic of the A1C sporting Kevlar is an Air Force ROMAD, a member of a Tactical Air Control Party. TACPs are permanently attached to Army maneuver units to provide air support, frequently in close contact with the enemy. I appreciate the opportunity to highlight them.

what happened to stroke 4, did he survive? from wikipedia: The loss of two F-16s can be attributed to a series of stresses, the lateness of the Air Tasking Order, not enough coordination time, a tactical approach that provided the Iraqis considerable warning, fuel problems for the Weasels and other aircraft, bad weather, and insufficient attrition of the defenses combined to create a dangerous situation. There were a number of crucial lessons from Package Q. The most obvious was that Iraqi defenses in Baghdad remained lethal: future strikes on Baghdad would be mostly assigned to F-117s, but conventional air assets with better coordination would still strike targets in downtown Baghdad.

Has anyone done a DCS recreation of this? As in recreating his maneuvers to match the HUD to give an external visualisation. It would be a lot of work, it may not even be possible, but if it was, it would be amazing to see. I guess the SAM side of it would have to be best guess from his reactions and audio calls (like break right).

Several top DCS content creators did do recreations awhile back. I can't recall everyone who did so, but the Grim Reapers did their take on this and I believe Growling Sidewinder did as well.

The real guts is on the first SAM he didn't jettison the bombs as well - the temptation would be to ditch the lot to get max turn rate, but he kept the bombs, and then put them on target.

Now this is weird. All morning I have been going back to rewatch Stroke 3 be an absolute legend in the Viper and watching the DCS recreations. Now this pops up. I guess I'm being told by higher powers that it's time to sub BJC. Edit - The Air Forces answer to Top Gun is Stroke 3. Already a great movie name. With enough support from the AF and in the right filmmakers hands/right cast, could be an awesome film.
