APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) it is used to get the engines/aircraft started. It´s a "little" turbine and that´s where it gets air.

@@brunofagulha As a former F/A-18 Aviation Electrician who spent much time on flight deck as a final checker and troubleshooter, the item shown is the APU exhaust. The vertically mounted item just past turbine blades is an exhaust gas temperature sensor. I know, I helped change out APU and wiring harness due to an APU fire.

I know you posted this six years ago, but as a former Hornet mech, the flaps are down by default. Keep the flaps in the auto position is potentially dangerous to final checkers or other personnel. If you keep the flaps up and shut down, eventually the LES and TES will drop to the down position due to weight. If someone were to start it up again for any reason and they're unaware that the flaps switch is in the auto position, as soon as the LES/TES are charged with power, those flaps will go in the up position, and if someone were to say look at the hyd gauge during startup (which is right next to the flaps), he/she is going to get a big flap slap to the dome.

@@edmondmkasian6173 Thats an AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR (Advanced Targeting Forward Looking Infrared) pod. It's used for day/night/thermal imaging as well as laser tracking for guidance of laser guided bombs. It can emit a laser for bombs to track or detect lasers from other aircraft as well as those from ground assets.
