I have just started to study this gem of a piece and find Greg's explanation to be quite brilliant. It mirrors my basic feeling about it. This piece is pure poetry, and indeed I spent half an hour one night before sleeping, wondering what words I would write as a poem to go with it. I don't recall feeling this way about a piano piece before. I saw something very romantic in it, a woman sitting in a park on a beautiful summers day (or late spring) waiting for her sweetheart, blossoms on the tree, a scent of perfume in the air. And later the, sun shining into a beautiful room casting it's rays on a wooden floor. And many other images. Also I felt it was set in Paris or perhaps London.

Can you please give me the source for it? My sources say: mesto 1 of 2 adjective me·​sto ˈme(ˌ)stō : sad and pensive -used as a direction in music mesto 2 of 2 noun " plural-s : a musical composition of sad and pensive character

Italian here: mesto comes from the latin "maerēre (to be afflicted) and therefore means to be sad, in a malinconic disheartened way, almost towards lugubrious and gloomy feelings
