I share a home recording of my musical gem for Pianoforte, Nocturne Opus 13. No 1. In B Flat Major "The Nightingales ". Which I composed on a warm summers night in the latter part of the Twentieth Century. This year I plan to transcribe this Nocturne and other such works into Publishing quality manuscripts to share with several young Performing Artists rising Stars who may bestow me the honor of performing them in concert in Europe and other regions. The coda of this piece is one of the most heartbreaking moments for me. It reminds of me trying to comfort my mother as she passed away, and the "happy" ending seems to represent her final release from pain

There are some nice conceptual links between the c-moll and fis-moll of op 48: the 4/4 time signature, the solo quarter-note melody, the chorale B section. even the harmonic structure is there: the response phrase of each melody first hints at the relative major, then moves to the minor dominant - difference being that the c-moll abruptly drops this trend by dropping a tritone g-moll to the Neapolitan, where as the fis-moll keeps modulating up by alternating minor and major third (fis, A, cis, E) until we reach a very distant, unexpectedly major key (Gis, enharmonic As). In terms of poetic interpretation, I would say that the structural similarities in spite of character contrast hint at two similar stories of a protagonist facing adversity, but one path ends with a heroic last stand to the death and another with acceptance of fate. Although since the musical story is so abstract, it is impossible to know which path is the “correct” choice… there might not even be one…

For me I feel like the ending of the nocturne represents acceptance, or again self-comforting after his loss. It's like he's trying to tell himself "it's ok... it's ok..."

@22:40 and after is my favorite part. I’m almost done learning No.1 (4 months), and I want to learn the ending of this one to play as an excerpt. I’m not really motivated to learn the whole thing yet as there isn’t any drama in the beginning. But this piece is definitely a masterpiece the way it was written with its surprises going from high notes to sudden base.

Very interesting analysis. Ive been pondering on this nocturne for some time, and i feel that ive never been able to open my heart to this piece. I'm always lost when I hear this piece. Emotionally lost. It is a beautiful piece though, nonetheless. Although I don't understand the f# minor nocturne, I can't help but feel that I'm destined to study the op. 48 nocturnes.

Thanks again for another lesson Greg, I love the idea of the melody being a dialogue. From your analysis I like to think the dialogue was between Chopin himself and Maria Wodzińska, with section B possibly being a happy marriage in his imagination. Towards the end of this section comes the tragedy that the engagement failed, and the dialogue returns but is never the same between them. This opus is directly followed by Op. 49 the F minor Fantasy so it is possible Chopin could have had a programmatic approach during these years. Anyway, thank you for the inspiration. I have a question if possible. You mention the connections between Chopin's motifs and Beethoven, but wanted to point out that I was under the impression that Chopin did not like Beethoven's music that much. Would you say that he did enjoy the music/taken some inspiration from him? I'd love to know your thoughts.

Thank you! Well, Chopin admired Beethoven, played a few of his Sonatas (Pastoral, Moonlight) but his personality was completely different. Beethoven's influence is very visible in Chopin's Scherzos. I'm talking about that in my video about Scherzo no.1. check that out! Chopin knew Beethoven, maybe didn't like his music so much, but gave to his students and definitely considered Beethoven as a great composer but simply very different from himself.

And by the way, if possible, I'd really like if you could do an analysis of Liszt's transcriptions of 6 Polish songs by Chopin, S.480 (I hope the pieces aren't off topic since the original songs are by Chopin), I'm very grateful for each and every in-depth analysis you make, by putting a lot of thought and effort into it, you truly do a great job. :)
