Dear Mr. Niemczuk, please - if you can - upload a recording of this piece! I can’t find ANYBODY who plays the church bells the same fortissimo! Everyone lets them soften at the end. You are the only one! I come to this video just to listen.

It's impossible not to like a video like this. Deep and sincere at all times. And who cares about a few wrong notes, if the MUSIC, that is so well composed, is so well felt, so well understood and so well played by the pianist?

It's NOT A VIDEO FOR PIANO PLAYERS! IT'S NOT TEACHING. It's just analysis for music lovers. So of course piano players will be bored watching it. I am not surprised at all.

Wow, almost the best interpretation and quite nice explanation of the piece additionally. But a little bit to much show and theatric action sometimes.

If I recall correctly, you posed a question about a plane without engines. Two possibilities: 1) A normal plane in a lot of trouble. 2) A glider (as in something that glides).

Great explanations as ever! Personal taste is for f/ff chimes not ffff (I know a lot of very famous players disagree though), but apart from that I love it! I have been learning this piece now on and off for a couple of months, and it really is a lot harder than it sounds, especially when one's technique is not at the Greg level! Pedalling has to be learned carefully and correct, chords have to be together and complete but not banged (and they are quite big with interleaved fingers, sometimes one had on top switching to the other); only the dynamics and rubato are moderately easy, as playing them naturally gives a pretty good effect (in my experience) - though of course with thoughtful play one can improve on that...

Gliding - when the airplane just glides to the wind with no engine. You can find in "The Thomas Crown Affair" and watch the beautiful gliding. (The Steve McQueen version is far superior). This is what I am imagining as you mentioned this part of the Prelude. You are quit e wonderful and has kept me engaged and inspired by your enthusiasm and knowledge of Chopin. Thank you.

this is one of my favorites when it comes to Chopin's preludes, It is almost like Chopin himself is set beside you and is explaining a story which he reminisces on. starts of with pure innocence and joy and gradually gets sadder, although never falls in despair as if he is trying to keep a happy face for a guest.

This was very nice, Mr. Niemczuk. Whenever I hear or play this prelude the ending often makes me think of someone playing the piano next to an open casket where someone very dear to the pianist is lying. I didn’t know the story about the bell. Thank you. 🙏

I was thinking that the 11 A flat notes should be played with the same "time gap" between them. because a clock does not wait longer for some beats. So why did Chopin leave 2, 3 and 4 bars??????
@gregniemczuk

I also thought so... But probably Chopin was a poet and he didn't want to make it literally.

@@gregniemczuk It could also be a matter of our perception of time: sometimes we hear a few chimes from an old clock, but we get distracted, and suddenly we are surprised by another chime, as regular as the previous ones, but, for us, more or less spaced out.

Like Falling off a Log: Rubato in Chopin’s Prelude in A-flat Major by William Rothstein [please Google to read the excellent piece in its entirety] [extract] "The form of the A-flat-major Prelude is simple. It is a five-part rondo, ABACA, framed by a two-measure introduction and a slightly longer coda. The second A section is incomplete, consisting of an antecedent phrase without its consequent; the third and final A section is heard over a tonic pedal." A brief outline of form (a more detailed version is provided by the author) Measures 1-2: intro Measures 3-18: A Measures 19-27: B Measures 27-34: codetta-->retrans Measures 35-42: A (prime) Measures 43-57: C Measures 57-64: codetta Measures 65-84: A (double prime) Measures 84-90: coda You can follow the analysis with the sheet music here: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5iagGZnlNOUbqs Regarding that point so beautifully explained by our host regarding Chopin "banging with all his power one note in the bass", I listened to a number of versions, and, unsurprisingly, it is Rubinstein who remains most faithful to this idea. See here (quite possibly 1946): m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/n6vIo2SGmdGErNU So wonderful. I actually thought that Greg Niemczuk might have been overdoing it in going on at such length about this, but listening to Rubinstein you can see that it is the making of the piece when it is performed in accordance with Chopin's obvious preference. No wonder that Clara and Robert Schumann and Mendelssohn thought so highly of it. From Wikipedia: 'The favorite of Clara and Robert Schumann. Mendelssohn wrote of it, "I love it! I cannot tell you how much or why; except perhaps that it is something which I could never at all have written." '

Greg is in practice mode while giving an analysis of ALL Chopin's works, as this piece takes a bit of time to get up to a full performance level for anyone on the planet. The piece contains a lot of complex and unusual chords and jumps. You cannot have the entire repertoire of Chopin ready in the fingers at performance level within a few short months!
@carlosazambujayt
@carlosazambujayt 7 ай бұрын
@ruzannavanesian7182 - And it still sounds great. It's not performance, it's for analysis. The tempo is Allegretto, a marking open to a certain range of possibilities, and the piece really imitates a human singer, with all the cantabile, the accents, the tenutos, the little ritenuto preparing a higher note... It can't be at in a very fast tempo. I also play a little faster than Greg does in this video (which, again, is not a performance video!), but Greg's playing is quite consistent nonetheless.
