I’m glad to see the ground side of judo coming back. In the 90’s that’s what we trained 80% of the time. Stand up wasn’t as important to our sensei, he always said it will end up on the ground. After every throw we needed to be in a submission or pin and continue even if it was an ippon.

His katame-waza is incredible. At 1:25 you will notice that he put his right hand UNDER the opponent's belt and grabs his waist, this seems to be helping him to keep his grip and turn the opponent. Thank you for your videos and comments!

Yes. Grabing of opponent's belt helps always. Grabing of oponent's belt isn't rare in judo newaza. It is true her katame waza is very good and her transtiton to newaza really, really impresive. Her fast is really fascinating.

What a predator, his opponents look like it is their first time newaza lesson

One of the keys I see here is he sort of flattens his opponents out. The opponents strength neutralized when their body is stretched. It’s like he has hooks in but in reverse. But also, I imagine it catches people off guard when he pulls them on top of him. There’s the false sense that Fukuda is vulnerable. And look closely at the second match: he didn’t grab the belt but went deep under up to his elbow and that wasn’t an accident.

I’d have to feel the mount. But it looks like you can either push on the knees with your hand and then break the crossed ankles with your feet. Or you can just bridge and roll over since he can’t base. I also think a huge factor of what’s giving him these back takes is the fact judokas just try to stay in turtle instead of looking for a weakness or opening to capitalize on
