Well this is actually their fault. 2016 tire allocation is allotted by Pirelli every race. They choose the 2 tire compounds that must be run. Hence the game told them to use the mediums in the beginning cause they needed to.

The rules are that you have to pick those tyres for the race weekend. In the race the only rule is that you have to use one of the 2 hardest compounds, which they did. I've used just one of the 2 hardest compounds in loads of races and the game didn't do anything.

To clear it up, you get 2 mandatory sets of tyres to use for a race, this means when you pit you HAVE TO PUT ON EITHER ONE OF THE MANDATORY SETS. So in this case it was the Soft and Mediums, Arava done this correctly because he pitted for Softs so he used 1 of the mandatory sets which is fine and legal, however Ben pitted for Super Softs which is illegal because he didnt put on one of the mandatory sets of tyres. Now you may be thinking well he started on one of the mandatory sets, yes he did but in a race you have to pit and put on a mandatory set, you cannot start the race with that mandatory set and then pit for a set of tyres that isnt mandatory. To be legal it is you NEED TO PIT FOR ONE OF THE MANDATORY SETS, NOT START AND THEN COMPLETE THE RACE WITHOUT PITTING FOR A MANDATORY.

Just to clarify this whole mandatory tyre saga, here is what the official Formula 1 website says: "Unless wet or intermediate tyres are used during the race, all drivers must use at least two different specifications of dry-weather tyres in the race, at least one of which must be one of the two mandatory sets nominated by Pirelli, though the teams are free to decide which one." So what Ben and Aarava did was perfectly right, and not a violation of the rules. Therefore they would have been fine not pitting on lap 14.

Keep the result, The Medium tires were the mandatory tire for this race. In the youtuber championship they all ran the INTERMEDIATE tire, that's why they didn't get DSQed. It could also be that the Mandatory tire at that race was the soft tire for whatever reason, I don't know if it changes up from race to race or whatever.

Regarding the tires: Pirelli reserves 2 specific tires for a race. This means that even if you use two different tires but not one of the mandatory tires you get disqualified. Even if you start i.e. on a soft tire which you used in qualifing and the then change to the supersoft (with the race specific tires being soft and medium) you didn't use your mandatory tire, since you need to use one of the race specific tire sets.

When you select the tyre strategy, the tyre compounds marked with an ! are mandatory. But you should only have to use one of them (as per regulations in F1)

No not correct. The tyre regulations for 2016 basically have two parts: 1. Each driver must use two different compounds of tyre during the race. 2. Each driver must use at least ONE of the two mandatory SETS (not compounds) as nominated by Pirelli prior to the race weekend. In this case Pirelli would have nominated one set of softs and one set of mediums as compulsory race tyres. They both used the soft, but the game must have glitched by not putting them on the mandatory set of softs.
