Seeing how safety standards were back then and how bad these crashes look its a miracle the 90s only saw two fatalities

Because after 82 safety standards were hugely increased.

I started watching F1 in 1993 and it's amazing looking back at these crashes now that there weren't more serious injuries...

You look at many of these crashes, and you wonder how these drivers survived with the flying wheels/suspension and concrete walls. And then of course you realise, 1994 at Imola, two drivers were killed in the same weekend because of those very factors. Glad the sport is relatively safer today. RIP Senna and Ratzenberger.

90s Formula 1 was wild, every crash this era have a small chance of being fatal because there is no safer barriers or tecpro barriers, just a metal barrier

Not to mention the lack of Safety Car deployment and HANS or high cockpit sidewalls.

The thing is, popular opinion until imola '94 was that f1 is pretty safe and no further actions needed...

My father's era (until May 1st, 1994). His favorite driver on his era is Emerson Fittipaldi and Ayrton Senna. Meanwhile, his favorite driver on current era is Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton.

First crash was not far from where Martin Donnelly came to grief later in the season.

Yep! Where the guard rail around on that turn that Donnelly crashed on was covered with tires, which saved Nakajimas life. Instead of the guard rail itself, shame on the organizers of the circuit and the FIA for removing the tires around the barrier. Instead of keeping it, so Donnelly wouldn’t be so injured as he became thanks to their idiotic removal of a such an important feature to a circuit.

Nakajima was lucky - a rear wing coming off at that speed is one of the most dangerous failures a 1990-spec car could have. Schumi had a similar thing happen at Hungary in 1992 - fortunately, there was a huge run-off area that stopped him before he hit anything.

One thing I do not understand to this day is that people do not understand elastic/plastic deformation. It is not safe to stand 10cm behind an armco and still people keep doing it, just look at the fire extinguisher in the last clip to seen what I mean (and this was a low energy impact). Like the people over here in the Netherlands that thought they were safe behind a crush barrier from a monstertruck.

How do i get across the point that current F1 cars are too easy to NOT crash, without sounding like a morbid freak

Depends on if you watch for the crashes. I also think the drivers are way more skilled than these times (drivers getting kicked and new ones getting signed during the season)

F1 cars nowadays are much more reliable and better designed. 90s were the last time when quite a lot of semiamateurs did some F1 team because they sold the idea to some rich guy who funded them and they then build some car and so it went.
@alexanderrose2580
@alexanderrose2580 7 күн бұрын
It’s all down to modern F1 cars just being too easy to drive. We can’t say drivers are more skilled now, some of these crashes involved the best of the best who drove cars with manual gearboxes, no power steering and a lot less down force than today’s cars. Those cars were beasts compared to today’s machines. As I see it, if drivers aren’t crashing, they’re not really trying.

It’s absolutely baffling to me when people complain about the safety advances of Formula 1. A lot of these crashes, while looking largely innocuous, the drivers were very lucky to come away unscathed. The 90’s was A LOT MORE than just Senna and Ratzenberger’s unfortunate death. It was Barrichello knocked unconscious, as well as Wendlinger at Monaco (in fact, he went into a coma), and Eric Comas at Spa. It was Hakkinen nearly dying at Adelaide in ‘95, and Schumacher breaking his legs in ‘99. Look how exposed the cockpits were, look at how easy the tyres flew off.. look at the fact that it takes multiple cars off the circuit to warrant even a safety car. I’m glad that F1 is hellbent on safety, because I don’t want to watch a fatality on live TV, and neither should you.

Effettivamente,tra muri troppo vicini alla pista e ruote che si staccavano sempre,fu un epoca molto pericolosa, indubbiamente... ma era un' altra F1,un altro sport, rispetto ad oggi e, sinceramente, era più avvincente...
