@@donnysarian Had he lived he'd have won with a big gap to 2nd. He missed 4 races including his defending title as reigning US GP Champion at Watkins Glen. He had extremely bad luck 'cos he was just about to reach his prime as a driver. Remember, he was just 28 years old, 3 years younger than Jackie Stewart. I'm still fascinated by him. Jackie Stewart said that he was his greatest rival and perhaps the fastest in the past Jim Clark era. That says something.

Was bloody awful. They say some people watch just to see the accidents but I was only 9 or 10 at the time. Of all the accidents over the decades this one stuck in my head. Poor guy; rest well Jochen.

@@abhasgupta354 Hi, this was in practice the day before the race, and practice continued later that day. Jackie Stewart tasted the salt of tears as he made his fastest ever Monza lap! Unbelievable. And the GP went ahead the following day, won by Clay Regazzoni.

It was the car meant to be driven by Emerson Fittipaldi. Emerson himself had a big shunt the day before testing Jochen's car and ended up somewhere in the woods, so Jochen couldn't drive it in practice on Saturday.

Jochen wasn’t keen on driving the notoriously fragile Lotus cars but they were also the fastest cars. He described his relationship with Colin Chapman as “Strictly business” and they weren’t close. Earlier in the season the Lotus broke causing Jochen to crash. He went back to the pit and shouted “If this keeps happening you will kill me!” Quite prophetic in the end. The Lotus 72 had inboard mounted brakes inside the body with the discs connected to the wheel by small shafts. One of the shafts failed and the car careered off the track into the barriers and as people have pointed out he fitted his seatbelts incorrectly causing him to slide downwards and suffering fatal lacerations to his neck. Lotuses were always so fragile.

@weemissile 11 ай бұрын
The crash actually wasn't that terrible in and of itself. However Rindt had deliberately secured himself in his cockpit improperly, believing that he would be able to extract himself from the car quicker in the event of a fire. But due to his body being too loose in the cockpit, he slid inside it during the crash, and the straps cut open his neck, causing him to bleed to death.

If his seatbelt was done properly he would’ve survived but would have suffered severe leg injuries. The reason why he had the seatbelt the way it was was so he can get out quicker in an event of a fire. The halo would’ve played no role in an accident like this. The halo would not have saved his life

I'm sick of people acting like the halo is the ultimate cure for absolutely every accident in the sport. Why are today's fans such whiners?

The halo might have helped Tony Brise (edit: Tom Pryce). I found a video that goes through many accidents with the quaestion if halo would have helped. Same conclusion as you (no help for Rindt) and me (probably saved Brise (edit: Pryce)).

@ysgol3

Hi, it's highly likely he'd have survived, I'm not sure he'd even have had bad leg injuries! Because he wouldn't do up the crotch belt, he 'submarined' - slid down - in the car. This caused the belt buckle to cut his throat - which was what killed him - and also caused him to have horrendous leg injuries - one foot being entirely or nearly entirely ripped off. You can actually see him submarining as the car spins after impact - his head goes down - and after it's stopped you can see the remains of his legs sticking out through the front. (He was allegedly removed through the hole in the front, the film doesn't show this of course.) Had he done up that crotch belt he wouldn't have submarined and may - just may of course - have avoided bad injury. Jackie Stewart soon afterwards was filmed saying how vital those crotch belts were - presumably he'd warned his close friend Rindt about what he was doing but Rindt still continued, and it killed him.

The Lotus was notoriously light and fragile ( thats what made it fast ) I dont think he would have survived no matter what seat belt harness of the time he was wearing. In best case scenario he would have been severely maimed and or crippled. Most men back then would rather die then end up like that. Drivers safety was the last thing thought about or even considered in Chapmans cars.

Jacky Ickx had the chance to win the championship that year but said he was glad he didn't as it wouldn't have been fair winning against a driver who couldn't defend himself.

It’s was choice not to have a wing on the back. In fact he didn’t put his seat belt/ safety harness on correctly. He said it’s bc it would be easier to get out of the car if it catches on fire. Unfortunately, because he didn’t put it on properly he slid forward and the buckle cut his neck.
