The finale of the hybrid era Formula 1 seamless gearbox. We go over the electronics that control that control the gearbox and most importantly show it shifting!

You could do the Koenigsegg Light Speed Transmission, to explain the difference between shifting with friction clutches and shifting with dog clutches, and to explain the two-stage gearing design versus the normal single-stage gearing. I assume that the friction clutches would be the construction challenge.

after years I got accidentally back to your series and watched this video. I'm glad you finished this project, man, you're obviously an engineering genius. I wish you put it into a gokart or something though, but I understand as you say that would require serious changes to the design to make it work in metal form. In any case, impressive. Congratulations :)

Thanks! I would like to try it in a car like my Mk1 Golf. The design could be simplified a lot since it's not an F1 car. But I always comeback to a dual clutch gearbox is probably cheaper and easier to implement, even if it is heavier.

As always, great work! By the way are you going to build the final version in metal?
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign Жыл бұрын
No. It would be awesome in metal. A lot of the design was optimized for 3D printing, so it would take some serious changes around the bearings and everything.

Hi there would just like to say amazing work!! Don’t worry the KZbin algorithm will bless you eventually because your doing amazing stuff. Secondly can this gearbox be machined on a cnc machine or can they only be 3D printed? Also haha I seen your video on the 3speed sequential could you not go back improve that and make a useable 6 speed sequential now that you have the experience of basically designing an f1 box from the ground up your amazing bro
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign Жыл бұрын
It could be machined from metal as a model. It lacks a lot of things like proper bearings, lubrication and the tolerances are far too large for use in a vehicle. You need some strong and fast actuators too. I thought about designing my own 6 speed sequential but for the money it’s not worth it. A good name brand sequential gearbox is $20-25k which is less than you can make a one off gearbox for. I had a lot of people want a gearbox for a shifter cart but I think it’s easier and more reliable to just buy the internals from a motorcycle gearbox and install them inside a case. 🤷

What about doing one that has some parts 3d printed, and some parts like gears and pther high load parts on a cnc machine and a lathe?
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign 8 ай бұрын
That’s would be cool, and you could get a lot tighter tolerances so it shifts better. For me it was just too much time and money to try that.

Love it! What method or sensor did you use to measure the torque changes?
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign Ай бұрын
Since this is driven by an electric motor, I can accurately control the torque with the microcontroller. It would be much more difficult for real F1 gearboxes and they use a series of MagCanica torque sensors that can measure microscopic bending in the output shaft.

Where did you hear that the current gen F1 gearboxes use shift torque reduction? I was under the impression that the whole point was to be able to upshift at full engine torque, just like a Liberty gearbox, or a Lenco
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign Жыл бұрын
When I designed my previous F1 gearbox I met an F1 test engineer on Reddit. It’s done for durability. The gearboxes have different shift modes depending on how hard they want to abuse the gearbox with the shock loads. I don’t believe the wheels will see much of a cut in torque given the inertia of the drivetrain. It’s also a common feature in most electronically controlled sequential gearboxes like those used in rally racing.
@ZergZfTw
@ZergZfTw Жыл бұрын
@@IndeterminateDesign That makes sense; most normal sequential gearboxes use either a spark/fuel cut or timing retard. In F1, they could also use the MGUK to pull torque. I can see them having a conservative mode to preserve gearbox life and a full attack qualifying mode. I know some high end time attack cars with DCTs that shift at full torque; the gearbox and clutch just have to live with the shock load. Wear doesn't matter that much if you only need one lap at full send.

I'm sorry to be that guy, but I am just curious of how much money would it take to make one adapted to a 2-stroke 100cc engine. Or, if it is possible to get the 3D print files. Thank you very much, I hope you have a wonderful day! Edit: I have a 100cc motorcycle that use sequential gear, no clutch lever. I'm thinking of building a gokart with the engine from my motorcycle using this gearbox, or, just a 1000cc 3 cylinder engine. Again, thank you very much!

The F1 gearbox model is available on printables.com under indeterminate design. I don't know how well this would adapt to a motor cycle. It would be quite expensive to manufacture a custom gearbox like this and the control electronics would need to be much stronger. The disadvantage of this gearbox is that if anything goes wrong you will engage two gears and lock everything up. Check out this gearbox, it's based off the Honda MotoGP gearbox and is probably a lot better suited to a motor cycle. Unfortunately it will still be very expensive to reproduce in metal. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Znito3eJbZKhmKc

Hey, anyone here can explain why no car manufacturer makes their cars with this kind of gearbox?
@IndeterminateDesign
@IndeterminateDesign 8 ай бұрын
The Valkyrie AMR does have something like this, along with the price tag to match. 😂 These gearboxes shift extremely harshly, are expensive to build, and require expensive maintenance. For any road car or lower cost race car, heavier dual clutch gearbox’s , or a traditional sequential dog-box gearbox are a much better compromise.

@@IndeterminateDesign Come to think of this, I've heard this seamless gearbox technology can make up shifting smoother and more continuous than the conventional type for the race bikes in MotoGP... It provides smooth and continuous torque while a rider is up shifting, so that it saves shifting time and tire wear. Many bike manufacturers even equip their super bikes with seamless gearboxes. But I'm not sure of these claims and advantages because I've not ridden a super bike equipped with this kind of gearbox before. Can you tell me about this?
