Finally the Mika Salo episode. Been waiting for this for ages, Mika always was my fav F1 driver since he ran the whole 1997 Monaco Grand Prix without a pitstop and continued with a damaged front wing to finish 5th!
@davidkoczo21664 жыл бұрын
Fully agreed. He was always great in Monaco, scoring points on his every finish in machinery like Tyrrell, Arrows and Sauber.

I believe he would of been a world champion if he had a full time seat with a top team. He was very underrated.

To be in the right place at the right time....that's being lucky in most respects,yet there can be underlying reasons for several excellent drivers didn't get the success they deserved.

@@INDIGOBLUE555 Jacques Villeneuve outqualified him by some margin in 1999 at BAR. Poor Jacques could have been World Champion in 1999 if he was with Ferrari or McLaren.😪😪

I can still remember the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim in 1999 when Mika Salo was close to his first victory but was not allowed to win. At the time, Mika Hakkinen was more well-known than Mika Salo. But the fans appreciated his strong performance and chanted "Mika! Mika! Salo!" after the race. Will never forget this. He really deserved that victory.
@SiVlog19892 жыл бұрын
He admitted to come back to earth with a bump the race after that in Hungary. Spending most of the practice sessions doing race simulation and as such not running new tyres, he struggled with the balance change in Qualifying once he had new tyres and could only manage 18th on the grid, only making up 4 places in the race, finishing 2 laps down

Feel so bad for Irvine, almost got the championship as a #2 driver.
@MrBritishComedy4 жыл бұрын
At the end of the day, Irvine just didn't deserve to win the title. Häkkinen had a dreadful year. The car was fast but unreliable. He himself made quite some huge mistakes and yet Irvine wasn't capable of making the best of it. Half the time he was way off the pace. Then Schumacher comes back in Sepang after not driving the car for half the season and he's immediately much quicker both in Sepang and Suzuka. It's obvious that if he hadn't broken his leg, he would have beaten Häkkinen with ease that year.

To be fair, Irvine would have probably overtaken Salo in the German GP if they raced. Thats why Salo doesn't complain about that much. But this was Ferrari. In those days they were famous for making Irvine get out of Schumacher's way. Eddie had 2 paybacks in 99. In Germany he would win anyway, in Malaysia, Michael dominated. Salo was one of the best drivers of the 90s era. But he almost never got a chance in a good team.
