Drill it out a and retap it slightly larger. That’s what the dealership would do. I’m sure it’s 84 inch lbs not 84 foot lbs. anytime you drop a sealed pan assume you have to replace the gasket or seal. Best practice

Thanks for the advice bro! Normally I would have thought the same with the gasket… I just listened to some bad advice on both the gasket and the torque specs! Thanks for the advice! #motivationcrew
@workingdad

good call on the re-tap to next larger size. the gasket is reusable if not torn or damaged, and most often what's done. Any time you see a metal gasket with rubber seal ring on it, it is reusable if not damaged. These are not like the old fiber and cork gaskets from years ago. inch pounds is also correct on pan bolt torque. I have not checked to confirm, however, 84 inch pounds is 7 foot pounds, and that's about the right range for trans pans like these. It is surprising how low the torque is.

Don’t over think it. Drain and fill every 30k. Swap the pan for one you can drain with plug. Dorman sell one. Easy. 5 qts every drain roughly when measured and it’ll always stay good.

Ford owners manual says to service the fluid at 75,000 which means running it through a machine to have it cleaned. Actually changing it would then be at 150,000. This is for a 2006 f150 4.6

@@MeAndCarKeys cleaning it is not a flush. It just goes through a machine and it cleans out the impurities… cost $150… when i got it actually changed i took it to ford and they drained it and serviced the transmission. Cost was only $300. I do know to actually change it you need a way to suck it out of transmission because there is no drain plug on the torque converter and that’s where a majority of the fluid is…

The thing is, you probably did not have a leak. When I drop my trans pan, for the same service you are currently doing, I thought I had a leak at first, too. But, when you overflowed the trans fluid, when filling, it ran to the back of the transmission and drips down off one of those bolts in the back. Next time continue feeling as you would, then cap it, then take your brake cleaner and compressed air and spray the hell out of it. Then you’ll know if you have actually have a leak.

Transmission flushes are a no no in my book. They just stir up anything that settles out of the oil and runs it back through the transmission. Before i retired i had a fleet of about a dozen Ford pickups. After losing 2 transmissions shortly after flushing I stopped doing the flushed and went back to dropping the pan and replacing the filter. Our new trans rebuilder advised not doing the flushes as well. Better to leave what settles out where it lies. I like changing out the oil and filter every 50k miles.
@MeAndCarKeys
@MeAndCarKeys 10 ай бұрын
I’ve been told the same thing about doing a flush and MANY people have told me that it ruined their transmission…but Ford recommends it for some reason. I like your recommendation for 50k! That works for me. Thanks for the advice! #motivationcrew

So a trans flush is not the same as a oil drain and filter replacement? My truck starting to do the shudder and i have 120k miles so contemplating on the dealership flush.
@normanmckean6
@normanmckean6 Ай бұрын
@@j_1one924 go to e real transmission repair shop if available and have them do the fluid drain and filter replacement. They can tell what's going on in your transmission by looking at the filter and what has settled in the oil pan. A flush at this point will only make it worse.

Tips: A trans will drop for days, so no worries about the mess, it happens. Kitty litter is the best cheapest spill absorbent. Let it sit on the spill and then later work it in, grind it in , with a shop push broom. Clean it up and then use Purple power and water hose to clean up deeper. I use a large 5x3 metal flat pan under the catch pan. No matter how careful there's always splashing trans fluid. Save old water or milk gallon jugs. You can pour up the old fluid with a funnel into the milk/water jugs for transport to the recycling. But also will give you an idea of how much fluid you lost.

Thanks a lot bro for the good tips! I used dirt to soak it up but Ofcourse it didn’t soak all of it. It looks bad so I will try the Purple Power. I funneled the old fluid into the container the new fluid came in. I’d estimate about 6 quarts not counting what I spilled on the ground 😂 thanks again for the tips bro! #motivationcrew

Why did you think 8ft lbs anyway? They're going into aluminum, and it's 22 inch lbs, not ft lbs because of that. Also you can't reuse the old gasket. You always have to replace it even if it looks fine. The reason being they flatten out once tightened.

If any of it is poking out, you can try a vise grip and turn it out. If not, EZ out will be able to extract the broken bolt. If the threads are fucked up, you will have to drill and tap new threads. Look into helicoil thread repair kits for the thread pitch of that bolt. Good luck

Ooh my man, I feel bad for you, that sucks. Im pretty sure pan bolts would be inch pounds. As far as service and service interval, I took mine to a transmission shop and the mechanic told me they are designed to be serviced at 100,000 but it depends on what you are doing with it. The reason that the manual doesn’t give you any numbers is because Ford doesn’t want you to do it yourself. I tow a side by side for work and sometimes a bass boat, so I had mine serviced at about 75,000 miles at a cost of about 460 bucks. Here is the kicker though. I just got back from a job in Ohio and took my truck in for service for several issues, one of which was a hard shift between 4th and 5th gear. They tell me my transmission needs to be rebuilt or replaced! Luckily I had purchased the Ford extended service plan when I bought my truck wthich covered the cost. They also had to replace the electronic module that controls the navigation and radio. That alone would have been 1300 bucks to fix if I hadn’t bought that extended service plan. On the bright side, I’ve been driving around for the last 2 weeks in a brand new 2023 F150 XLT as a loaner. Hope everything worked out on yours, it’s always tough when you break it yourself.

@@MeAndCarKeys , yes the transmission shop did a full service, flush, filter change. lol, funny thing is, I was going to get some breakfast the other morning in the ‘23 , and I noticed it making a weird noise like it was in 4 wheel drive. Thought maybe I had accidentally pushed a button or hit something with my knee. Nope, so I switched it back and forth a few times to see if I could get it to quit. It finally quit after 10 minutes or so, and the only thing I can think of is, maybe it had moisture in the vacuum actuator for the hubs, and it was frozen. Talked to my brother about it, he said the same thing happened to his 2013 platinum after about 25,000 miles and they ended up replacing the hub. He also just had to pay 3600 bucks to fix an oil leak on his 2015 F250 diesel! Seems like it’s always something.

Oh no brother. Best advice in my opinion is, Call a friend. Call a friend that has EXPERIENCE in bolt extraction the exact way that was stated above my comment with a bolt extractor bit. Do not tackle this alone. You do not want to make things worse. If you need to tackle this solo, Practice with the bolt extractor bit on something else , watch a Ronnie of videos on extracting bolts. Did you not replace the pan gasket? Also , Check, check, check, triple check bolt torque specs for absolutely everything from FORD ONLY. Ford Shop Manuals are available free to download. They include absolutely everything. If you are feeling nervous or not confident in extracting the bolt, Then pay the $100 and have it put on a flat bed tow truck and sent to a garage for this repair. Transmissions are not for the faint of heart. All will be okay brother. It’s not the end of the world. We all often need to swallow our pride. KZbin VIDEOS FROM AMATEUR SO CALLED MECHANICS ARE NOT A GOOD IDEA. Although, there are many, many great shop videos. Best of luck Brother. Peace🙏🏾💪🏾
